20 Jan 03 - 08:04 AM (#870429) Subject: Review: The Sun, Beverley From: GUEST,Wotcha Visiting Yorks Area Just wanted to let folks know there is a nice gathering early evening at the Sun Inn, Beverley near Hull ... a pretty receptive audience and talented musicians (I wasn't one of them ...). I did get to sing "General Taylor" and "Fathom the Bowl" which seemed to go down ok ... I overheard some interesting comments from one of the locals to his mates about this particular gathering though: seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about managerial types (or those that delegate work) being the sort of folks doing this thing. This guy earlier breezed in, walked straight through the circle when he could have just walked around -- welcome to Yorkshire I thought to meself ... (just wondering if there is some tension on this sort of thing in English pubs ... should I bring brass knuckles in the future?). Anyroad ... having a great time in the UK ... Cheers, Brian |

Are they not allowed a life too? Anyway, the majority of people that turn up for our sessions to play or listen seem pretty nice to me and, as Pete, I've not come across any animosity from locals in the pub - exactly the opposite in fact: Lots of locals turn up just to listen to us. Which brings me to the fact that this Sunday (26th) is my "last Sunday of the month" session so I'm hoping for a good turnout of folkies and locals. Roger (cookieless again) |

The crowd was good natured: I just thought I'd share my observation about this one fella who was clearly bent out of shape and was wondering if he's going to try something more than just walking through the circle next session. John, the publican, seemed happy to have the entertainment anyroad and Keith happy to have some unaccompanied noises from Virginia. I have finished my visit to Yorks, so am flying back to the States. Regretably, I was unable to attend the session at Nellies (after spending 4 hours on the road getting to Harrogate from Beverley, I decided to cank my return trip). Meanwhile, one last CAMRA ale down pub ... Cheers, Brian |

In fact many of the audience thanked us as they left at the end, several had asked for requests during the afternoon and nobody grumbled at all even when our best effort at a cajun request was Jamabalay. A great wrap up to the trip ... and I think there was a Mudcatter there too ...Yorkshire is definitely on my list of places to visit again. Cheers, Brian |

Since then most of them have retained the name. In Beverley they held a poll amongst customers a couple of years ago on the premise that the pub should revert to its original name of the Sun. The vote was about 92% for changing the name back - and it was changed Roger ps When first traveling around local folk clubs and sessions trying to promote the Sun sessions I received blank looks when I said that they were in the Tap & Spile - nobody local knew it as anything but the Sun |
