BS: Bush to Fox: Watch the hens!

I cannot find a text story about something I heard on npr this weekend past. If any of you know about it, please post. It was about members of Bush's government going around the country to big businesses and having them sign pledges to curtail their environmental polluting. It only ran once, then I heard nothing more.

I did find this, which is somewhat related and of interest: click.

The whole story brought to mind the opening scene of the Simpsons when Bart is writing on the blackboard, "I will not....etc." And, we're supposed to believe that when it comes to big money polluters?!

The other surreal thing which struck me this week is the announcement that Libya was successful in its bid to be named the head of the UN Human Rights division. Ghadafi (sp) must be ecstatic.

I don't think even the Bush clan could do that, Bobert. :>) Sure is whacky out there sometimes, huh? BTW thanks for going to that demonstration!

kat: careful, grab a fence post or something ...I agree with you on the Libya situation. Action such as this taken by the UN adds fuel to the argument that the UN is a hypocritical gutless organization.

Yes, Indeed! damn near as hypocritical and gutless as the Bushies rushing to embrace Libya and kiss Quadaffi's arse when he offered to help them against al-Quaida and support the "War Against Terrorism"[sic].

Was there any "bid" by Libya to chair this group? As I understood it from BBC's reporting of it, the chairmanship of this committee is held on a rotating basis. It was the turn of an African country to provide a chairman and Libya was nominated and seconded for the post. This was objected to by the US and a wide variety of Human Rights Groups and then went to a vote by the countries involved (33 voted for Libya, 3 voted against and there were 17 abstentions if memory serves me correctly) - the result of the vote was that the Libyan nomination was confirmed - no other candidate was proposed by the African member states participating.

Libya was nominated to run the UN Human Rights Commission by African nations. This nomination being widely seen as part of the unofficial quid pro quo Libya had negotiated in return for financing the newly-created African Union, the successor to the Organisation of African Unity, which was formed last year.

GregF, from your posting above are you of the opinion that Libya's offer of help against Al-Qaeda should have been rejected???

That's the way I heard it, too, except that Libya made sure that no other African nation would make a bid for the nomination and that they would vote for Libya. Either way, it does seem a curious thing, strange bedfellows and all that. NPR did quite a bit on how Ghadafi has been "mending" bridges throughout the world, including with China, Great Britain, France, etc.

Thanks, Greg.

I really was more interested in finding info on the big business pollution pledges if anyone can help on that?
