Lyr Req: Il Pescivendolo

Anyone know the words to the Matteo Salvatore song used in "The Big Night"? Apparently, it's off his album of Italian beggar songs, so I'm assuming it must have some history before he recorded it. If anyone out there has bought that album and knows it contains lyrics, throw them my way.

Thanks,

Right one? No history.

IL PESCIVENDOLO

Ueh, tenimmo lu pesce fresca stamattina!
tenimme lu cefalo, tenimme l'anguilla e lu capitone,
li calimeri e lu merluzza!
Ueh, bella fé, te piace lu pesce, bella fé. uhe, uhe, uhe.

Ma sent'allegra stamattina
Jei iettata la ret'ammera
Tanta pesci jei pescheta
E ma sent'addegrieta

Ueh, lu pesce, calameri, triglie,
Le pescheta stamattina
Ighu vegnu a bon mercheta
E perché, e perché, i me spusà.

Corrite femmene de lu paese
Aiutate la bancarella
Mettitavilla dintala gunella
Jetela frije dinta la padella.

Try this!
Il pescivendolo

The song does have a history. It is a version of one of the chants of the street sellers and beggars of Palermo. Matteo Salvatore is an excellent interpreter of these songs, a great folk singer, among other accomplishments.
It's too bad that language is such a barrier to appreciation of Salvatore's artistry.

Harmonia Mundi produced a cd some ten years ago with 14 of these songs by Matteo Salvatore:
"Chants de Mendiants en Italie," reissued as "Lamenti di Mendicante," thus still available. If it has lyrics included, I will post them. I have a copy packed away somewhere. Someone may have them handy so you may get it faster.

The Harmonia Mundi France cd, "Lamenti di mendicante," Matteo Salvatore, has lyrics in the original Puglia dialects of 14 songs, but no translations. The descriptive material in the booklet is French only.

This album was first issued in 1973.

Another Matteo Salvatore song from Big Night - Mo Ve'la Bella Mia da la Muntagna - does anyone have the lyrics? This is a tough one.
Molto Grazi

Here's a rough translation. The dialect is similar to my parents' native Neapolitan. I'm not too solid on the 2nd line of the last stanza, but I think the rest of it is pretty good.

The Fishmonger

Hey! We've got fresh fish this morning!
We've got gray mullet, we've got big and small eel,
squid and whiting!
Hey, pretty lady, you like fish, pretty lady, hey hey hey.

I feel happy today;
I threw my net into the sea,
I caught lots of fish,
and I feel pretty great.

Hey! I caught fish,
squid and red mullet this morning.
I'm going to the market.
Why? To get myself married!

Ladies, run over here from the town.
My booth will help you out.
Put my fish in your skirt,
And toss it into your frying pan.
