The work is now in progress (volume 1 and half of volume 2 are completed). Notes in addition to scores are often helpful. ~Masato https://electricscotland.com/music/minstrelsie/index.htm |

Greig was also involved with the overlapping British Minstrelsie set, also in six volumes; though the sixth doesn't seem to turn up as often as the others. |

According to the LC catalogue, Greig's 6 vols were published between 1892-5. I think this was the first ed, by Jack of Edinburgh. Hope so, as it's the one I've got! |

This set is bound in brown cloth. However, my local library also has a set and it is bound in blue. So that's 3 known colours and various dates. Puzzling! |

29 Jul 08 - 11:33 AM (#2400367) Subject: RE: Scots Minstrelsie (1893) by John Greig From: Big Tim I was curious about Greig himself so I emailed the National Library of Scotland asking if they had any biographical ino on him. Below is the reply, received in less than 24 hours. Well done NLS. 'There seems to be surprisingly little information on such a well known composer and professor of music, and most catalogue records merely refer to him as 'flourishing' between 1892 and 1910. [as in the Library of Congress catalogue - b.t.] However in John Farmer's 'A History of Music in Scotland' published, 1947, Greig is mentioned many times and his dates are given as 1854-1909. According to Farmer's text, Greig was educated at Edinburgh University and Moray House Training College, he also graduated B.Mus (1878) and D.Mus (1899) at Oxford. As organist at St. Cuthbert's Free Church, Edinburgh, and as interim professor of music at the University (1891) he was very popular. In 1900 he became organist of the Scottish National Church, London, where he died'. Also checked the blue copy of 'Minstrelsie' in my local library. They only have vols. 1,4,5 and 6. None have any date on them, but vol 1 has a photo of Greig in it, which is not in vol. 1 of my brown set! |

Parker - as far as I can tell, the books are very common and have little value, maybe a hundred dollars for the set - maybe $200 for a set in exceptionally good condition. I have just one volume, and I liked it. Can't find it just now, though. I checked prices at bookfinder.com - most of the available copies were from UK booksellers. -Joe- |
