I've a friend who used to listen to this song every morning on some tiny radio station. Possibly the singer was named something Dunn.

My firned can't locate the lyrics on the web, and I can't, either. If anyone has them, please send them to me at the email address KThornton7@hotmail.com

Thx in advance for your assistance.

Karen

Can't find the lyrics, either, but apparently the singer was Vaughn Monroe, baritone and bandleader during the late 1940s and early 1950s. ("Vaughn" and "Dunn" do sound similar!)

He died in 1973, and the poor man's obituary in the New York Times included this not-so-glowing review: "His success as a showman concealed the fact that his voice was--as his greatest fans were forced to admit--not very good. Frequently off key and quite nasal, his tones nevertheless were adequate to augment his warm manner and handsome appearance sufficiently to captivate audiences." What a way to be remembered!

Here's a link that will take you directly to the "singles" page of the website's discography section" http://www.vaughnmonroesociety.org/discography/singles.htm

Hmmm... my local tiny radio station plays a lot of obscure big-band music... maybe I'll ask them if they have this recording in their archives!

Damn! If only I had a warm manner and a handsome appearance - I already have the off-key nasal voice.

Vaughn Monroe - GEE! IT'S TOUGH TO BE A SKUNK

The Vaughn Monroe orchestra,

Vocal by Ziggy Talent

I've been a skunk my whole life through, but that I don't rejoice.
My mommy and my daddy were, and so I don't have a choice.
I might have been a fella with a snooty family tree.
What's wrong with me? I'm just a victim of heredity.

Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
There's nothing I can do about it,
And I guess I'm sunk.

I met a porcupine one day. Together we had fun.
We picked a lot of berries and we played out in the sun.
I said, "Your quills are very sharp. By gosh, they really sting."
He answered further, "You, my friend, are not a breath of spring."

Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
Gee, I guess that porcupine was sharper
Than I thunk.

A little girl once found me and she gave my back a pat.
She took me home and said, "Look, mom! I found a pussycat."
I waited on the porch and said, "I'm gonna love this place."
Her mother looked at me and slammed the door right in my face.

Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
I know I'd make the sweetest pet,
But people have no spunk.

It's very civilized, I know, to dress in fancy clothes.
Some folks might overdo it. Still, it's human, I suppose.
But what I found the other day just made my poor heart grieve.
I saw a lady's fur coat with my uncle on her sleeve.

Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
Gee! It's tough to be a skunk.
No doubt I'll wind up someday
Like my dear departed unc-
Le.

(Crying and whining and sniveling follow by the singer
And music ends the song)...
Then a deep voice echoes; "B.O."

That "sounds like' a great song.

It reminds me of Kermit the frog's song "It's Not Easy Being Green".

And speaking of "sounds like", I went searching for the lyrics of that "It's not easy...Green" song and had my ears assualted by a midi. It's bad enough when you visit a website that-unbeknowst to you automatically plays-a sound clip. But I absolutely detest websites that automatically play a midi. As far as I'm concerned, that's the pitts! I mean if I wanna hear the way a song sounds, give me the option of clicking on to an icon or something. But to play the midi as soon as I get to the website -Uggh!!!! And half the time it sounds so....YUCKY!!! It makes me wanna -scream

YABBA DABBA DOO!!!!

So I bet you expected the Tarzan yell. Fooled ya! ;o))

Okay. Okay. I feel better now.

And now that I've got that mini-rant out of my system, me and my digression are outta here.

AH! wonder if that's where Spike Jones pinched "B.O.!" from, or if it was a common comedy phrase?
