24 Jan 03 - 05:09 PM (#874118) Subject: Tech: Music chat that won't fit the categories From: Genie Sometimes we have threads discussing music but are not searches for lyrics, chords, authorship/origins, etc., and are not reviews, either. E.g., the discussions of the major 7th chord recently, discussions of what songs to sing in nursing homes, suggestions of songs for a holiday or theme program, or general discussions of particular styles or genres within folk music -- these don't fit into any of the existing categories. Also, announcements about festivals, jams, and gatherings don't fit any of them, either. Should we have a thread category for "Musical BS" or "Music: misc."? Genie |

Also, it seems some general music threads still get classified as "BS" even though it's no longer a relevant category. If it's a matter of too many categories, why not incorporate the "Review" category into a broader "Music Misc." category? Ed., it would help separate the music-related from the non-music related threads. Genie |

24 Jan 03 - 09:47 PM (#874338) Subject: RE: Tech: Music chat that won't fit the categories From: McGrath of Harlow Calling it Musical BS would surely mean that the people who filter out the BS threads would lose them as well. (Mind, I can't really see the point of filtering them out, when it's easier just not to open them if you are thtabway inclined - in any case as often than not they aren't marked BS by the people who start them, which I think is a pity.) I think the best thing to do with new prefixes is for people starting threads to try them out and see if they fly. If they catch on, they can get incorporated into the infrastructure of the Mudcat. Music.misc might well be worth trying out this way for the threads that just don't fit in the other existing categories. Though theoretically if it's not BS or any of the others the assumption should be that it is Music.misc anyway. |

So by filtering the BS you miss out ... |

I may be wrong, but I thought if you used a preformatted prefix, you still got the whole little box to type your thread title, in addition to the spaces used by the prefix. FWIW, I wouldn't call it "Musical BS" either. I'd suggest "Music: Other" |
