Celine Dion singing "God Bless America": tuneless

Styx doing a rendition of ""We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" prior to the player introductions before the game: tasteless

Shania Twain performing during half-time: shameless

Bon Jovi doing a set after the game: hapless

A set of ear plugs while watching the Super Bowl: priceless

There are some things money can't buy...for everything else there's DisasterCard. Official sponsor of the 2003 Super Bowl entertainment.

Hours of pre-game crap, including the butchering of the national anthem, followed by HOORAY one minute of actual football playing, followed by the last play viewed from every possible angle, then ten minutes of commercials, 2 of which will actually be good, then some player biographies, half a minute of football, that last half minute then viewed from every possible angle, then a shot of the arena from the blimp, 10 minutes of commercials, 1 of which will be any good, more player biographies, 10 seconds of playing.....

Four hours later you've seen an actual half hour of actual football.

I'll probably have it on the TV in the next room while I goof off on my computer, just in case something good happens, which probably won't. I expect to see a lot of catters in the chat room.

Hey! Want to REALLY feel good about making a difference? Make sure your voice gets heard as a Super Bowl commercial, by making a donation to moveon.org!

Just go here:

http://www.moveon.org/superbowl/

and contribute to the fundraising for the Daisy anti-war ad to appear during the Super Bowl!

Here is the spiel:

"Our "Daisy" ad campaign has been a fantastic success. Let's top it off with the most high-profile showing possible -- let's air it during the Super Bowl in Washington D.C. Every influencer in our nation's Capitol will be watching the Super Bowl and we can reach them all with this hard hitting ad.

Of course, Super Bowl ads are pricey. Even though we've negotiated a great deal for the D.C market, we need to raise another $40,000. The timing is perfect -- we expect the Iraq issue to come to a head next week with the President's State of the Union address. So we need your help -- if we all pitch in a little, we can get our "Let the Inspections Work" message on the biggest show going. "

When we lived in a big house in town we always hosted an Alternative-to-the-Super-Bowl party for people who would rather play music than watch football. The turnout was always huge. Unfortunately, our current abode is not big enough for indoor parties and January's not the ideal month for outdoor shindigs.

The kids and I figured out a few years ago that, while we found the game boring, we were all curious about the commercials. So we tape the whole mess, and after the whole mess is over, we gather to watch the ads and just zotz through the game, etc. Buncha hedonists, that's us.

Canadians get cheated! The game is carried across the country here, but the ads are replaced with Canadian-grown commercials. Unless one lives in a border city.
Just think, Windsor, etc., get the worst of both worlds.

Tsk tsk. Ye fellahs just don't understand the game. To explain it in detail would take longer than a game so here's a nutshell. Yankee football is as much a game of chess as a game of athletic prowess in that each "play" has nearly limitless options which must be contemplated by a number of team members and coaches in a very short time and then executed with flawless precision. We fans do not just WATCH the game, we PARTICIPATE by engaging our minds in the strategies employed.

I love to watch the game they play in heaven. I enjoy watching soccer. I crave watching good tennis. I like watching hockey. Aussie Rules is fun to watch. But I LIVE for anticipating the next play on offence and on defense in a game of Yankee football. Anyway, rugby could never take the place of Yankee football for me because, like many of the rugby players, and some ref's', I'll never understand the rules, er, laws.

Belive me Gnu, I tried for the sake of my US relations I really tried, but it was even beyond me, who as a lover of almost all Sports, ended up doubting my US cousins sanity.
On a visit to Ireland I took them to Croke Park in Dublin on a couple of occasions to see Gaelic Football and Hurling, they were converted right away, no ballyhoo or long boring intervals between play, just get on with the game and get it over in the stipulated time.
It is on live to-morrow on SKY TV, [all the US Football games are shown live on SKY Satellite TV] but I won`t be watching, the result on Monday morning will suffice. Ard Mhacha.

Gaelic Football and Hurling... gee, I wish I could see some. My old man told me he never saw anything as rough as Hurling (during WWII). Being of Irish descent, I have since desired to see a game, but TV here is pretty limited (New Brunswick, Canada). Hell, we only get one rugby game per week, not live but taped, which I watch faithfully. I've only ever seen Ireland play twice. The problem is, we get games from wherever, whenever, so I can't follow a league or cup quest. Worse, if I log onto, say, rugbyrugby.com to try to follow the stats, I know who's going to win on Sunday. I could get a dish rather than cable, but I live in Moncton and a dish just isn't reliable enough. We only get one Aussie Rules game per YEAR, the GF.. and I missed it last year because they had the wrong time listed in the newspaper TV guide. I was one p***ed off puppy.

Anyway, most are great games, but, if you don't have the time to learn and follow a sport, you'll never truly enjoy it.

I've got money on the Buc's, but not much ! Go Raiders.

Never having been much of a sports fan (I like the ones I can participate in, like archery or fencing), I'll be accompanying my wife to a sale at a quilt shop.

But you know, shooting some golf.... That's challenging. Only problem is that the little buggers are all stringy and rubbery inside when you clean'em, and they taste awful.... 8-)

Golf is not a game. There's no checking, no tackling, no running, no loud noise, no inherent danger... when I go golfing, I just caddy for my buddies and have a good laugh when they get upset. It's better than playing. Cheaper, too.

Does anyone know if there'll be "patriotic sadam-ass-kickin' songs" at the half-time show? Is Lee Greenwood still around? Dubya could actually ANNOUNCE the start of the war at half time.

This morning I'm listening to the speeches of the leader-ship candidates for Canada's Socialist (pretty Communist by States definition) Party.

Totally weird that these two events could happen on the same weekend and only be separated by a mostly undefended border.

I usually tried to boil 'em, Orc, but they never did get tender. Broiling 'em and frying 'em caused my wife to say certain things about the odor.

Besides, once you skin 'em and clean 'em there's hardly anything left.

More of a challenge to shoot than peasants, though.

Gnu, Sorry to disappoint you about Hurling, it certainly has plenty of body contact and the injuries with the Hurling sticks are few, it is all about skill,, one of the greatest of sporting spectacles.
And Gnu living here in Ireland we can view almost all of the World`s sports, our Irish TV covers all of our native sport, and terrestrial and Satellite TV broadcasts sport around the clock.
Bye the way Gnu,referring to my cousins sanity, no reflection on you, I might make myself more clear by saying that they supported The Steelers who at the time were struggling. Hope the game is a cracker,Oakland are the big favourites in our Bookies. Ard Mhacha.

I didn't realize they have professional competitions for hurling. Back when I was in college, lots of people used to do it after parties--especially those who insisted on mixing Jack Daniels with Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill and Yago Sangria--but nobody ever thought of putting an actual team together. Interesting concept.

Aloha,
Mark

Hurling, at the highest level, is one of the finest, most skilful games to watch - and that's from a rugby devotee.

And you're right about the laws of rugby, gnu - the referees don't understand them, and the players don't know them. The true understanding of all the delicate nuances involved is reserved for those making comments on the sideline.

Does anyone remember back when our Marine color guard carried the Canadian flag upside-down during the opening ceremonies for a baseball game? I think it's only fair that Celene Dion gets to butcher our national anthem. I'm looking forward to it. (obviously, our marines were city boys and had never seen a maple leaf , or any kind of leaf, and didn't know what it was).

Harvey... ain't that a hoot ? Typical Yankee ingenuity. Oh, you might call it arrogance, but when it comes to gamesmanship, salesmanship, plain old hype, you can't beat the Yanks.

Hrothgar... I've been trying to get some of my buddies into rugby by having them over for beers, munchies and explanations of the games. I'm no expert, but I try. A couple of them downright refuse to enjoy it because of the latitude given the refs. They can't seem to accept that X may be acceptable play to one ref and not to another. Or that there are differences geographically. The worst is when one side is penalized for X and the other other side, a few minutes later, is simply warned for X, depending on the degree of X.

Yankee football leaves very little, if any, latitude to the refs. So much so that sometimes it gets in the way of the game. Many of the relatively new "players' safety" rules are sometimes enforced so stringently that the games suffers - afterall, it has been called "smashmouth" for years. The fact that there are now "video challenges" allowed (each side has three per half - I won't get into the details) on certain ref rulings makes ref'ing a very stressful job.

Anyway.... I see that my weekly game of rugby has been replaced by "Equestrian". Only way that would be exciting is if they loosed some hounds and had several riders at once.

One of the fellows at our Saturday jam at the Bluegrass Shop here in St Petersburg gave a real good explanation of our weather. It has been very cold in Florida, in fact for several days we were under freeze warnings and hard freeze warnings. Temperature dipped into the teens in some places.

His explanation was that he had alwasy heard that 'Hell would freeze over if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ever won achampionship of nay sort'.
Makes sense to me....We have several pro sports teams here in the Tampa Bay area, the Lightning, a hockey team, the Devil Rays, Baseball and of course the Buccanneers, football. One of my all time favorite bumper stickers read,

GO BUCS, and take the Lightning and Rays with you!

Mark our GAA [Gaelic games] are Amateur, hopefully they will continue to remain so.
Don`t let the Amateur tag fool you regarding the players fitness, they give their all for their counties, in a hy-brid version of both games, we have more than held our own against the professional Austrailans in a annual Series of Internationals . Ard Mhacha.
