Review: John Kirkpatrick

Just had to tell you all - JK was at the Bothy FC (Southport, Lancs) last night. I'd forgotten just HOW brilliant he is! We all know he's THE squeeze box player AND and a brilliant singer AND a top bloke AND does all that dance band stuff AND the Band of Hope AND......

BUT (sorry about all these capitals - can somone tell me how to do bold?) what about him as a song writer?   He sang 'Old King Coal' which has to be one of the best songs ever written (now there's a thread!) and followed it with the one about love in a laundrette and 'Sid and Belinda'.   Absolutely tremendous stuff!

How can one man have so much talent?

To do bold you just type B in front of what yiu want to be bold, and /B behind it, but you put each of them in a pair of those arrow brackets < and > on the bottom row of the keyboard.

Like (B)this (/B), but using the arrow brackets, so it comes out like this.

Yes indeed, John Kirkpatrick is amazingly good.

Sickening, isn't it?

In about 1974 I first heard his album "Jump at the Sun" which includes Mattheson's Gigue - a four part fugue on anglo concertina! I've spent the rest of my life trying to figure it out.

He's been my inspiration in many ways since then and it's no coincidence that I play some of the same instruments as he does.

I love his singing and his sense of humour too.

I don't find it sickening, akshly.   Just someone to admire, listen to and wonder at. I too play the melodeon & anglo and am continually gobsmacked at what he gets out of them. I like his version of Blaze Away in which he plays the tune in the bass.

Great senso of humout - especially when he forgot the words to a song.

Might I also mention Brass Monkey.

I went to a song arrangement workshop of his and he was bloody amazing at that, too. Top bloke!

Is it my imagination or is he getting forgetful about words?

A few months ago he was at St Neots folk club and lost the words in several songs. He's good at being funny about it but it happened enough times almost to start getting embarrassing.

I must look out for his song arrangement workshops too.

Hey, Let's set up a musical happening...
March or April - massed concertinas - Battersea Park - we'll invite JK and not let Gavin off the hook this time either...
Tommy will be rockin' and rolling in his grave.

Sounds good. I could bring my battered old Lachenal (or maybe not).
Did the PEL demo on Monday get off the ground? I presume that was the
obscure reference. Sorry I couldn't make it, being trapped here in Basingstoke.

And when he had the odd minute he just managed to research a few old Midlands wassailing songs, put 'em together, arrange it all and teach it to our little wassailing group in Bishop's Castle last Christmas.

Pavane - if you can play any of Springtime in Battersea you're in!

Breezy - thanks for the plug. Lets hope Mary's voice is in better condition by then (we're cancelling Dartford next week 'cos she knows her throat's going to get worse before it gets better).

If you want JK for your club the contact info's on the web site mentioned above but here it is anyway

Play it? I have never HEARD it. But I bet the answer would be no.
Can you perhaps get him onto Mudcat?

Hi. I've been trying to track down John Kirkpatrick for a while to pay royalties on a song of his which I recorded a few years ago.
Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks.

Seamus: I'm sure if you contact Chris Jeager (see my message above) he'll sort it out. In the UK if you perform somebody's song in a venue that issues PRS (Performing Right Society) forms you just fill in the details, they send it to PRS and eventually PRS send a cheque for the accumulated royalties to the writer.

What happens if you're in Alaska, though, is anybody's guess.

I just saw JK in fine form last night the Hitchin folk club,
supported by Robin Huw Bowen (Welsh triple harp), who was also
fantastic.

Just seen Brass Monkey at Lichfield - oh what a night. Brilliant. For my money the best folk act around at the moment.

Thought I should mention that JK didn't forget any words.
