29 Jan 03 - 11:34 AM (#877641) Subject: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: McGrath of Harlow Partly because of running into so many Mudcatters at the demo about licensing in London on Monday, I started thinking about the "Members Photos" and "Members Profiles" you find if you click on "Members Photos and Info" under Quick Links on the front page of the forum. And the question that puzzles me is, why do so few of us stick anything in them? Especially photos. Is it modesty? Or fear we might run into someone we don't want to run into and be recognised? Or just a sense that it is better not to give too much away just in case something comes up that we aren't sure of that might make us regret it? I suppose equally someone could ask the question the other way round. Is it showing off? Or hope we might run unto someone we want to run into and be recognised? Or just a sense that it is better not be open about things generally, just in case something comes up that we aren't sure of that might make us regret not being open? Maybe it's a sort of "Is that glass half empty or half full?" thing. And are we more or less likely to flame other people or get flamed if they have put their faces on the the line, or we have put ours up there? Or doesn't it make any difference? |

29 Jan 03 - 11:42 AM (#877652) Subject: RE: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: JedMarum I think you'll find that there are so many very good looking UK Mudcatters that modesty prohibits them from posting their pics. They want to give the rest of us average Mudcatter Joes a chance! ;-) Mudcat; where all the women are strong, the men are good looking and the children are above average (to steal a phrase fro Garrison K). |

I don't mean you necessarily like people just because you have seen them or met them, but it keeps antagonism in bounds. Of course there are exceptions, but they tend to be people you see onteh telly. |

29 Jan 03 - 02:39 PM (#877808) Subject: RE: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: McGrath of Harlow I vote for sloth and ignorance. Most times they are the ones who get in. No, it's got to be voluntary, I think. But what might be fun would be if there was a little button next to the name on a post which would show if there was a picture, and when you pushed it you saw the picture. Then when someone said something nasty maybe you'd click on it and stick your tongue out instead of writing a nasty post back. |

29 Jan 03 - 02:42 PM (#877811) Subject: RE: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: treewind Well, I finally worked out what to do after being reminded on a thread (about the Mudcat CDs, I think) but I still haven't really worked out what I have to do to get listed in the Mudcat Profiles section. The way it's displayed looks like there must be an online form you can fill in, but I'm danged if I can find it. I mean I could just email or PM a great wadge of text to someone in charge but surely they've got better things to do than decipher contributions into the required format... Anahata |

29 Jan 03 - 08:27 PM (#878071) Subject: RE: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: Burke I have some concern for giving out the personal information, like bithdates, real e-mail, location, etc. A question for those who do have done personal profiles either with or without the pictures. Have you heard from others who have obtained this personal information. Has the contact been positive or negative? I suspect I'm being a bit over anxious about this. My name & phone number is in a directory as local contact for another hobby of mine. So far as I can tell, the only people who have used that source are really interested in the hobby. |

29 Jan 03 - 08:39 PM (#878087) Subject: RE: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: McGrath of Harlow email addresses and even more, real addresses, I can understand people being chary about that. But birth dates? I suppose you might have a Mudcat Birthday thread, but otherwise I can't see the problem. There probably is one, I just haven't thought about it enough - I know Joe Offer advises against giving birthdates. But of course there's no reason to give any information you don't want. No need even have to give a recognisable picture of yourself, stick a disguise on, for instance. But it's fun to have something to fill in the imaginary space we share. |

I often have several windows open (brrrr!) with pictures of all those present - where poss. I think people should be encouraged to contribute their photos - but NOT compelled! A button - perhaps a hyperlink in the message header or MudChat name list - which opened a new window with the photo in would be brill, if someone had the expertise & time to set it up. With a bottle and friends you will find me at home... Steve |

30 Jan 03 - 09:30 AM (#878407) Subject: RE: BS: Why so few Mudcat photos? From: Roger the Skiffler I can't resist this (sorry, garg) but the UK Guardian newspaper has run a series of letters on the subject of real people named in song titles or lyrics. Today someone posted the fact that a band called "Half man, half biscuit" has a song called "99% of gargoyles look like Bob Todd". Bob Todd was a UK comedian, that US audiences may remember from the Benny Hill tv series, not exactly Tom Cruise in the looks department. Was it close, garg? RtS |
