From: GUEST,Julia

hello- I just played for a retirement community where a lovely elder (probably age 75) told me of this song she learned from her great-grandmother in Nova Scotia. Does anyone know it and can you tell me anything about it? Thanks!!

Dear little light bird, happy and free
Come to me, come to me
All in white and colors bright
Come and let me hold you tight

The great sun holds me, I cannot stay
I slip through your fingers, I fly away
He sends me down with his love to you
Be glad in his light and be always true

From Song Echoes from Child Land for the Home, the School, and the Kindergarten by Harriet S. Jenks and Mabel Rust (Boston: Oliver Ditson Company, 1896), page 112:

THE LIGHT BIRD
Words by Anne L. Page, music by Harriet S Jenks.

Dear little light bird, happy and free,
Come to me, oh, come to me.
All in white or in colors bright,
Come and let me hold you tight.

The great sun holds me; I cannot stay.
I slip from your fingers; I fly away.
He sends me down with love to you.
Be glad in his light and be always true.
