11 Jul 98 - 03:42 PM (#32302) Subject: smashing of the van From: Parable Jones Can anyone supply words and\or music to the song "Smashing of the Van" which refers to an incident in Glasgow in the 1920's when a prison van was smashed setting free an Irish rebel. There are lyrics available to a similar song detailing a similar incident in Manchester. I think the tune may be the same as "The Rising Of The Moon". My Grandfather was involved in the incident and my Grandmother used to sing the song many years ago. yours aye. P.J. |

I have them and the music and if you will send me a mailing address I'll copy same and mail them to you. I just found two songs via Mudcat that I've been looking for for years, so this is a way to pay back what I've recieved. My information comes from Irish Songs of the Resistance by Patrick Galvin. Attend you gallant Irishmen and listen for awhile, I'll sing to you the praises of the sons of Erin's Isle It's of those gallant heroes who voluntarily ran, To release two Irish Fenians from an English prison van. 2. On the eighteenth of September, it was a dreadful year, When sorrow and excitement ran throughout all Lancashire, At a gathering of the Irish boys they volunteered each man, To release those Irish prisoners out of the prison van. 3. Kelly and Deasy were their names, I suppose you knew them well, Remanded for a week they were in Bellevue Gaol to dwell, When taking of the prisoners back, their trial for to stand, To make a safe deliverance, they conveyed them in a van. 4. William Deasy was a man of good and noted fame, With young Allen and O'Brien they took a part so grand, In that glorious liberation and the smashing of the van, 5. In Manchester one morning those heroes did agree, Their leaders, Kelly and Deasy, should have their liberty, They drank a health of Ireland, and soon made up the plan, To meet the prisoners on the road and take and smash the van. 6. With courage bold those heroes went and soon the van did stop, They cleared the guards from back and front and then smashed in the top, But in blowing open of the lock, they chanced to kill a man, So three must die on the scaffold high for smashing of the van. 7. One cold November morning in eighteen sixty seven, These martyrs to their country's cause a sacrifice were given, 'God save Ireland', was the cry, all through the crowd it ran, The Lord have mercy on the boys that helped to smash the van. 8. So now kind friends I will conclude, I think it would be right, That all true-hearted Irishmen together should unite Together should sympathize, my friends, and do the best we can. To keep the memories ever green, of the boys that smashed the van. |

(I apologise now in advance for any spelling mistakes because here in the UK it's 12:45(that's quarter to One in the morning for non deciaml lovers), I've drunk a of of Bushmills and France have just won the World Cup). Given time I will be only too pleased to post lyrics to the Mudcat, but what Irish@prof.co.uk offers is a jpeg file of the sheet music, including guitar chords.I know this probably infringes copyright laws but when the original material is not available, then "he who dares wins" regards Mick |
