I'm gonna be in the market to pick up a pair of speakers for gigging (Tired of renting and/or borrowing gear) to go with my -Yorkville MP6d- mixer... Any specifics you suggest? I am especially looking for something small in size but big on power and sound... My whole kit has to fit in a Ford Focus! ;-) |

Mackie has some great powered PA speakers... all you need is a mixing board. They also make non-powered speakers; their stuff is uniformly good-sounding and roadworthy. It may also be worth your while to check out Canadian DAWN speaker systems which consist of a woofer and two tiny satellites. Very compact, and excellent sound. Click here. Cheers, Michael |

From: RichM What about yorkville speakers? a pair of 10 or 12 inchers from the Performance or Pulse series might be worth investigating. I use a pair of 12" Performance speakers with my rig . If you want a pair of good value 1x15s (with horns) then if you were in the UK I'd say try Carlsbro Alpha 15s - can even handle a bit of kick drum. Personally I find the current Mackie powered tops very harsh and scratchy. I like JBL TR225s but they are probably too big for you, so you might try the 125s. If you are a halfway competent carpenter you can build your own - try an Eminence Kappa 12 plus two (yes two) Motorola 400 watt powerline piezos in each cab. I have a pair like that and everyone raves about them. Mine are bigger than necessary and heavier than necessary, but I happened to have some inch mahogany laminate lying about... For port calculations I think the website is www.subwoofer.org but I may have misremembered that - it's also called the subwoofer diy page. |

The YS-115s come with one 15" speaker and a high range horn. These are not great speakers, but I've found them to be just fine for the small pubs, clubs & even outdoor festivals where I play. They're not really large either - 24" H x 18" W x 14 ¾" D. All my equipment, including 3 acoustic guitars, fits into a '94 Geo Metro. Yorkville's just one maker in the market tho'. From my limited experience, I try to look for used equipment in decent shape from any of the mid-market manufacturers. Good luck! - Merritt |

Well, if you click the link I supplied to the specs on the mixer I'm talking about you'll see the first line reads, "The MP6D six channel powered mixer..." Clear enough?? ,-) 2, "Really depends what you are trying to put through them." Good point... at the least, a voice, an accoustic guitar and on occasion a bodhran... At the most, 2 Guitars, 2 voices, a bazoukie/mando mix, and a selection of penny whistles... Venues... from small room pubs, to (I guess) medium sized indoor and out-door shows... 3, "If you are a halfway competent carpenter you can build your own" Heh... ya... that's a mighty big IF there mate!! LOL 4, "They're not really large either - 24" H x 18" W x 14 ¾" D" Got a ballpark figure on their weight merritt??? |

Terry's an old friend and he can probably set you up. I'm using a pair of McBride cabs in my lesson studio presently. He mostly wholesales and catalogue sales parts but has also got small cabs. I can't at the moment find the catalogue with website and toll free info, but it's likely all Google-able. 1-519-884-3500 will get you there too. Elsewise I'd go with Yorkville or Mackie.
