Will keep looking LAS VEGAS IN THE HILLS OF DONEGAL Pete Gallagher You may talk about Atlantis, how it's lost beneath the sea Or the grave of the unknown soldier and the cry of the old banshee Who was the man in the iron mask, was Jack the ripper set free? But ask them all where's Donegal, and it's still a mystery And if I could I'd build a wall around old Donegal The north and south to keep them out, my god I'd build it tall Casinoes, chicken ranches, I'd legalize them all We'd have our own Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal Yeah!! Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal Lay by clubs and all night pubs, black jack and roulette Mel Gibson, Brigitte Nilsen, Mike Tyson having a bet (bite) Iniseoghain would then be known for it's multi-millionaires Where Donald Trump would have a chunk to live in solitaire And if I could I'd build a wall around old Donegal The north and south to keep them out, my god I'd build it tall Casinoes, chicken ranches, I'd legalize them all We'd have our own Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal Yeah!! 06 Feb 03 - 10:24 AM (#883995) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal From: Big Tim I went imto the Ture Inn, on Foyleside, a few years ago with my brother (who lives in Donegal) and he said "my brother's over from Scotland, he likes Irish songs". The barman said "I'll put on the Goats"! I had to pretend that I liked it! I've seen the "Goats" live since, they are a decent band and have written some OK stuff. |
06 Feb 03 - 11:03 AM (#884015) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal From: Declan pattyClink, I wouldn't spend much time trying to analyse the lhe lyrics of this one. I think its something to do with a proposal (which probably came up late one night in a pub) that Donegal should be fenced off and legalise gaming machines (which Phillipa rightly says are banned in Ireland, except in seaside holiday resorts) and build up an economy based around gambling in the same way as Las Vegas has. Goats Don't Shave are (were? I haven't heard of them lately) more or less a good time band, something along the lines of the Saw Doctors. Like Big Tim I've seen them live and enjoyed them at that level, but I didn't buy the CD. |

06 Feb 03 - 01:02 PM (#884111) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal From: Joe Offer Hmmm. Sorcha is fast, but I sure wish I could teach her to search here first. Sorcha's lyrics credit the song to Pete Gallagher. In this thread, Jon Freeman says it's Pat Gallagher. Anybody know? The song sure seems to be popular in Countey Donegal. I think I heard it three times in the two days I was there. Can't say I like the song. -Joe Offer- |
06 Feb 03 - 01:15 PM (#884118) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal From: Sorcha Joe, with the Forum Search down, Filter and Alpha all I can figure out to use. Filter only gets thread titles. Alpha only gets DT stuff. Sorry. Any other bright ideas for searching while the Forum Search is down? Sure wish it would come back. |
06 Feb 03 - 01:33 PM (#884133) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal From: Joe Offer Well, yeah, if you put Vegas in the filter... Or in the Forum Search. I explained a number of alternative search techniques in the first message of the FAQ. We have many methods of searching, and the Digitrad and Forum Search is not the only one and not always the best one for the situation. But anyhow, is the songwriter Pat or Pete Gallagher? My original guess was that it's Pete, but this site sounds very credible (seems to be the group's label), and says that it's Pat. -Joe- |

Minor correction to the words above. I'm pretty certain the first line of the last verse is: "To stand atop of Errigal would give me such a thrill" ...as Mount Errigal is the tallest peak in Donegal. |
