There's an obvious error in the DT lyrics.

Where it says:
Boat keeper swallowed a nickel one day
It should be:
Bookkeeper swallowed a nickel one day

A small thing, but it makes the joke work.

Hold The Woodpile Down
Vo 5151

Saw my love the other night. (Hold the woodpile down,)
Everything wrong, just a-nothing was right. (Hold the woodpile down.)
Gave me a love lick to make me glad. (Hold the woodpile down,)
I kissed her and here come her dad. (Hold the woodpile down.)

CHORUS: But I was a-traveling, traveling,
As long as the world goes round,
For the backyard shine on the Georgia Line.
Hold the woodpile down.

Come to town the other night,
Heard a little noise, and I seen a little fight.
Police watching and a-running all around.
Load of moonshine done come to town. CHORUS

Storekeeper swallowed a nickel one day.
Run him 'most crazy, I must say.
Oh, listen now and I'll you all it's about.
He's a nickel in and a nickel out. CHORUS

Down to the packing house, stole a ham.
Folks don't know how bad I am.
Carried it home as I laid it on the shelf.
Just so bad, I'm scared of myself. CHORUS

Love my wife. I love my baby.
Love them biscuits floating in gravy.
Carry my dice for to throw my passes.
Love them flapjacks floating in molasses. CHORUS

UDM is singing

"For the black gals shine on the Georgia line
Oh hold the woodpile down."

"Backyard shine" was contributed by the NLCR in the 60s, who either had a scratchier copy of the record or were practicing some early PC -- more likely the former, since they point out the phrase and that they don't know what it means (something to do with moonshine?).

I think it is backyard shine, as in moonshine whiskey made at home.

Mark, I agree with 12-Stringer, Uncle Dave sings 'black gals shine' -this is as clear as a bell on both the County and Bear Family reissues of the 7 May 1927 recording with the Fruit Jar Drinkers (Sam and Kirk McGee). According to both the Meade and Russell discographies, this is the only recording Uncle Dave made of the song. The transcriber for the book accompanying the Bear Family set gives 'For the black gal to shine on the Georgia line', but this also is clearly wrong!

Once again, Joe, my apologies for appearing as 'Guest' in previous post - forgot to login again after a Norton weekly check which eats all cookies.

As I recall, Doc Watson sings "Pretty girls shine on the Georgia line...".

I suppose it could have been "Pretty gals..." - it's been a while since I listened to the record.
