10 Feb 03 - 10:04 PM (#887291) Subject: BS: NATO & the Anti-War Euros ROCK MY WORLD! From: GUEST First, we had this yesterday from the pope with a pulse: Published on Monday, February 10, 2003 by the Times/UK Pope Takes Issue with America's 'Just War' by Richard Owen in Rome THE POPE launched an eleventh-hour crusade yesterday to avert a war against Iraq, for which he believes there is no justification. The ageing pontiff rebuffed attempts by the Bush Administration to persuade him that impending military action against Baghdad amounted to a Christian "just war". From Common Dreams website, read the rest of the article here: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0210-03.htm And then, today France's Chirac & Russia's Putin come out with a JOINT STATEMENT declaring there is no justification for war against Iraq at this time. THEN NATO, for the first time in it's history, turns down a "request for assistance" from member Turkey, effectively throwing YET ANOTHER ROADBLOCK in the Bush/Blair warpath!!! This is a GREAT DAY for lovers of peace around the world! Hooray! There is hope yet--get yourselves in the streets--any streets, anywhere in the world this Saturday, with a sign that says "NO BLOOD FOR OIL!" or some such. We can do it, people! Help Chirac, Putin, Schroeder, and NATO grow a backbone that can stand up to the Anglo Axis of Empire! |

From: GUEST I'm surprised that with all the peace mongering going on in Mudcat, that no one wants to discuss these truly hopeful developments on the diplomatic front. Why not? I think we may even be on the verge of Kofi Annan, on behalf of the UN, aligning itself with the NATO position of not offering any assistance to the US/British invasion of Iraq. Regardless of how this specific (Iraq) conflict sorts itself out, what we are witnessing is (finally!) a challenge to Anglo Axis of Empire from Europe's other most powerful countries--France, Germany, and Russia, and to American/British imperialism. In other words, the power of the US & British empires are being directly challenged in the international community. That is HUGELY significant because it has never happened before. Comments? |

From: McGrath of Harlow And it looks like there won't be a majority of the Security Council backing Bush, even if you leave the matter of vetoes aside. All this is very embarassing for Blair. It could be he might not be able to deliver the UK to Bush, given the momentum of opposition to him here. |
