11 Feb 03 - 03:22 PM (#887920) Subject: Quiet Lands of Erin...public domain? From: GUEST,Kristine I want to record my version of "The Quiet Lands of Erin". I learned the tune from an album by Jake Walton and Roger Nicholson, called Bygone Days. I need to know whether the song is in public domain. I have looked through the thread regarding public domain, and have also searched the public domain lists for the song, with no luck. I have searched Jake Walton's web site, and the Furey Brothers web site (he says he learned the song from them), but there is no place to email them to ask. So if any of you have suggestions, or knowledge on the song, I would be ever grateful. |

From: Malcolm Douglas The search engine here is now working again, and a search through the "Lyrics & Knowledge Search" on the main Forum page for quiet land of erin will get you rather a lot of information. English language versions of the song are probably all still in copyright; more precise information can be found in the earlier discussions. |

I looked through and the information is helpful. If the English language versions of the song are still in copyright, would you know who I would contact regarding the copyright? Thanks again, Kristine |
12 Feb 03 - 12:02 AM (#888240) Subject: RE: Quiet Lands of Erin...public domain? From: Joe Offer Hi- I think the song is usually known as "Quiet Land of Erin" (singular "land"). I put crosslinks to the previous threads up at the top of this thread. Hope that helps. If you can go to this thread and find the particular English version you're interest in, point it out and ask - one of us can probably find the source. My Jean Redpath "First Flight" CD doesn't show where she got the song, or who holds the copyright. BMI (click) shows versions by Kim Robertson, and by Rita Connolly and Davey Shaun Carrick. I think Connolly and Robertson make beautiful music, but I doubt that either one wrote the original version of this song. ASCAP shows one listing, but doesn't show the songwriter (that's unusual). -Joe Offer- |
12 Feb 03 - 04:49 AM (#888345) Subject: RE: Quiet Lands of Erin...public domain? From: Declan I think that's Shaun Davey rather than Davey Shaun. Shaun is a well known composer and arranger and Rita Connolly has been associated with a lot of his work (e.g The Grainne Mhaol Suite) as has Liam O Flynn (The Brendan Voyage and others). I'm not sure but I think his arrangement of the tune may have been for a TV commercial for Erin foods! If not specifically commissioned for that purpose it was certainly used for it. |
12 Feb 03 - 04:55 AM (#888347) Subject: RE: Quiet Lands of Erin...public domain? From: GUEST,Philippa It's now very easy to find the main thread about this song; see "related threads" at the top of the page. If you read the other thread you will see that the original Irish language song is attributed to John McCambridge (Seán Mac Ambrois)and the best-known and recorded translation to Joan O'Hara (sister of the well-known singer Mary O'Hara). As suggested, that translation may well be under copyright (even though it seems some of the recordings don't attribute the translator). I haven't heard the Fureys sing this song. |
