From: SINSULL We are now on Orange alert for terrorism and there is a very good chance of an attack before Saturday - tying in with the end of the Haj. NYC and DC are once again prime territory. How many of you have a three day supply of food and water set aside, a "safe' room, and enough plastic and duct tape to seal you and yours in for the duration of a nuclear, I mean nucular, cloud. I wonder how funny this will seem a week from now. Today, I am trying to picture how a few ply of plastic and the ubiquitous duct tape are going to save me from Hiroshima/Nagasaki burns, fallout, and destruction. Better get myself down to the post office and pick up a locater card in case I survive and my house doesn't. Federal offence not to file one, you know. Think I'll refill my meds while I'm at it. There's been rumors of war and wars that have been The meaning of the life has been lost in the wind And some people thinkin' that the end is close by "Stead of learnin' to live they are learning to die. Let me die in my footsteps Before I go down under the ground. I don't know if I'm smart but I think I can see When someone is pullin' the wool over me And if this war comes and death's all around Let me die on this land 'fore I die underground. Let me die in my footsteps Before I go down under the ground. There's always been people that have to cause fear They've been talking of the war now for many long years I have read all their statements and I've not said a word But now Lawd God, let my poor voice be heard. Let me die in my footsteps Before I go down under the ground. If I had rubies and riches and crowns I'd buy the whole world and change things around I'd throw all the guns and the tanks in the sea For they are mistakes of a past history. Let me die in my footsteps Before I go down under the ground. Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood Let me smell of wildflowers flow free through my blood Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace. Let me die in my footsteps Before I go down under the ground. Go out in your country where the land meets the sun See the craters and the canyons where the waterfalls run Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho Let every state in this union seep in your souls. From: McGrath of Harlow Meanwhile in Baghdad - Battle-weary Iraqis resigned to war from the Australian paper The Age: "I have seen two big wars, many battles, much fighting," said Khalil Ibrahim, 35. "We have passed through more difficult times than these and, no, I am not afraid." Mr Ibrahim was in the Iraqi army for 11 years and owns an antiques shop near Jamhuriya street in old Baghdad. An air raid shelter near his home provides the only protection from the most powerful air force in the world. But Mr Ibrahim has no intention of using it. "If they bomb us I will stay in my house," he said. His preparations for war amounted to nothing more than stockpiling food and water. Nearby, Amer Subhi, 41, had taken one additional precaution. He had bought some candles. "Our electricity might be cut off," he said. But Mr Subhi had not troubled to discover whether there was an air raid shelter near his home. "I am not afraid," he said simply. "If they bomb us I will stay in my house" - that's how it tended to be in London in the Blitz. Shelters just mean you die in company, why bother? And there's a London Doubledecker bus in the middle of the picture that goes with that story, and a dome in the background - a mosque, not StvPauls, but it all feels very familiar somehow. |

This image of Iraqis that the War Machine is selling is quite different from the real world. Here, an artist worried about not being able to fire his ceramics when after 3000 bombs dropping on his neighborhood he may be dead in three weeks? Duct and Cover by Reggie Miles 2003 The threat of war is loomin', Anthrax bombs may soon be zoomin', To your bedroom in the suburbs but don't despair. From deep within his mountain bunker, Where Gee Dubbya's gonna hunker, A solution to our dilemma he is sure to share. Our best scientific minds, Were charged to seek and find, An all American answer to our plight, And with the billions spent, On research by government, They finally discovered one that works just right. Yes they've found it girls and boys. Protection from those evil toys, Affordable and available throughout the land, Yankee ingenuity, Has triumphed once again you see, Providing health and safety to every woman, child, and man. And what miracle is this, That secures our freedom bliss, And ensures all our blessed liberties? What treasure is it, made by man, That can do, what no other can, This creation of our modern technolullogies? It's the simplest things they say, That can always save the day, And it's oh so very true in this case too. You needn't build a big bomb shelter, You can avoid the helter skelter. Listen closely here is what they say to do. Just duct tape and cover your windows and your door, With plastic sheeting you can buy at any hardware store. It's an easy thing to do, no matter if you're rich or poor, And much cleaner than crawling 'neath your desk down on all four. It's a lesson we've all learned in school, fifty years ago. When we feared that the idea of droppin' A-bombs would grow. They've changed the words to suit our times. Instead of duck and cover rhymes. Now we just duct tape and cover instead. It kind of makes you wonder, Why Gee Dubbya's way down under, Neath the mountain in his little hidy hole. When all he needs to do, Is just follow me or you, To buy some plastic sheeting and some duct tape by the roll. Then he could duct tape and cover his windows and his door, With plastic easily bought from any hardware store. No need to kiss his butt goodbye, When missiles fall down from the sky, When he can duct tape and cover instead. |
