14 Feb 03 - 04:35 PM (#890558) Subject: Lyr Req: Jingoistic song From: Rapparee Several times I've heard a song that goes something like "The eagle is hurt, her feathers are ruffled" and continues in a jingoistic vein that "America will do what she needs to do." Does anyone have the complete lyrics? A search of the Forum, DT, Google, and Metacrawler come up with nothing. |
16 Feb 03 - 10:51 AM (#891511) Subject: ADDPOP: The Eagle (recorded by Waylon Jennings) From: delphinium Is it Waylon Jenning's "The Eagle" - The Eagle - Written by Hank Cochran, Red Lane and Mack Vickery. (© Tree Publishing Company.) Recorded by Wayne Jennings on "The Eagle", © 1990, Epic. Lord knows I am peaceful, When I'm left alone. I've always been an eagle, Been a while since I have flown. My claws are sharp as ever, So is my eagle eye. Something's gonna go tonight, When the eagle flies. Lately I've heard rumors, That the eagle may be lame. Just because I've been idle, Don't mean that I'm tame. You've jeopardized my freedom, My natural place to roost. I can fly if I have to, If they turn the eagle loose. So lay all your doubts aside, When you go to bed tonight. My feathers have been ruffled, And I'm ready for a fight. Just because I took a while to fly, Don't mean that I don't care. When you feel the shadow crossing, The eagle's in the air. So lay all your doubts aside, When you go to bed tonight. My feathers have been ruffled, And I'm ready for a fight. Just because I took a while to fly, Don't mean that I don't care. When you feel the shadow crossing, The eagle's in the air. When you feel the shadow crossing, The eagle's in the air. |
16 Feb 03 - 01:32 PM (#891609) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jingoistic song: The Eagle From: Rapparee That's a good one, and I somehow missed it. But no, that's not the one I've been hearing. Thinking on it, I believe that it deals with the September 11, 2001 incidents and the response to them. Here's what I think the first verse is, missing some of it: The eagle is hurt, her feathers are ruffled Make no mistake she is coming for you. ........... Time as you know it has ended for you. The group might be the "Full Gospel Trio" but I'm not really certain of that, either. |

14 Apr 07 - 04:22 PM (#2025392) Subject: Lyr Add: COURTESY OF THE RED, WHITE, & BLUE From: pdq COURTESY OF THE RED, WHITE, & BLUE (The Angry American) Toby Keith American girls and American guys Will always stand up and salute, will always recognize When we see ol' glory flying, there's a lot of men dead, So we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our head. My daddy served in the army, where he lost his right eye, But he flew a flag out in our yard 'til the day that he died. He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister, and me To grow up and live happy in the land of the free. Now this nation that I love has fallen under attack. A mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in the back. Soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye, Man, we lit up your world like the fourth of July. Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list, And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist, And the eagle will fly, and there's gonna be hell, When you hear mother freedom start ringing her bell, And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you, Brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue. Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage. This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage. You'll be sorry that you messed with the U S of A 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass. It's the American way. Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list, And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist, And the eagle will fly, and there's gonna be hell, When you hear mother freedom start ringing her bell, And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you, Brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue, Of the red, white and blue, Of my red, white and blue. |

14 Apr 07 - 04:47 PM (#2025411) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jingoistic song: The Eagle From: Don Firth I recall hearing a Country & Western song in the mid or late 1950s called "Thank you, dear Gawd, for victory in Korea." Lots of "Red, White, and Blue waving o'er Seoul" and "that'll teach America's enemies!" Serious song (seriously!). Not quite a C & W hit. It didn't get much radio play. Don Firth |
14 Apr 07 - 06:02 PM (#2025460) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jingoistic song: The Eagle From: 12-stringer Don Firth: The song you cite was a 1953 Jimmie Osborne number, on the King label, "Thank God for Victory in Korea." It followed up his 1950 hit, "God Please Protect America," whose chorus went something like "Give us victory in Korea, and save our boys so fine. God, please protect America in this troubled time." I remember hearing the first one on the radio in the early 50s (but never heard the second). Moore & Napier remade it in their 60s bluegrass LP on King, "Country Music Goes to Vietnam." |

08 Mar 12 - 10:44 AM (#3319761) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jingoistic song: The Eagle From: Jon Corelis Does anyone remember with nostalgia that great '60s hit "An Open Letter To My Teenage Son"? It inspired numerous "response" records which have mercifully been forgotten, but the original remains a howling 1960s kitsch classic. Here are the lyrics to my own attempt at a jingoistic song, though I haven't gotten around to fitting tune to them yet. But maybe they would be better just grunted: Mammoth Bone Stomp Leader: I know I live in the land of the free 'cause it tells me so on my T. V. Chorus: It tells us so on our T. V. so we know that we live in the land of the free. All: The land of the free on our T.V. is the world's great vision of felicity. Leader: I'll turn whole countries into mud, since oil's a whole lot thicker than blood. Chorus: Yes, oil's a whole lot thicker than blood, so we'll turn whole countries into mud. All: Thicker than blood! Turn them into mud! So you'd better just follow our directions, bud! Leader: And if they don't do what we tell them to, we'll make them into barbecue. Chorus: We'll make them into barbecue unless they do exactly what we tell them to. All: Barbecue: that'll be you, and your baby and your granny and your billy-goat too! The song sums up the climate during those years. I'm glad other people are looking for it. I would really like to have a copy of it. |
18 Nov 22 - 09:44 AM (#4158018) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jingoistic song: The Eagle From: cnd I'm not certain it's the right song, but Charlie Daniels' "In America" mentions the eagle (link) Since there's so much extraneous commentary, I'll consolidate what we know this song request is about from both threads into one message: Several times I've heard a song that goes something like Not sure if it's the Singing Cookes. They don't tend to be bluegrass, and though gospel is often heard on bluegrass stations, I haven't seen anything in their discography to indicate a song like this, though I can't rule it out. |

If they don't get back to me, I'll post the info for posterity, but I don't want to put out their info without doing my due diligence first. |

21 Mar 23 - 05:01 PM (#4168205) Subject: RE: ADD: Jingoistic song: The Eagle (Hank Cochran) From: cnd Closing some notes I've had pending resolution for a while in an attempt to declutter. I've exhausted all my options on contacting the band -- I've (attempted) calling them (the line never picks up) probably a dozen times, I've sent Facebook messages, and I've contacted radio stations, and all have come up empty in terms of procuring a recording. So I'll just put out what I've got with the caveat that, while I couldn't verify I'm answering the original poster's request, I can say it's right with a very high degree of confidence. The song Rapparee started this thread in search of is probably The Eagle Is Coming, by the True Gospel Echoes of Salyersville, KY, released on a CD of the same title in 2002 (link). The song was written by West Liberty, KY resident Hurl Bates (source). Below is a comment describing the song: The True Gospel Echoes last CD out is The Eagle Is Coming, It's about the hit in the Twin Towers Sept, 11th., We sent the President Bush 3 copies and he sent one to Afghanistan and the boys over there fixed up a chopper to look like an EAGLE so they could say THE EAGLE IS COMING. They sent us a picture of it and it's on the web page also. You can listen to the song by going to the web page it starts to play when you get there.
