tune Req: Captain Valiant (Caddick, Laycock, Bond)

Subject: Lyr Req: Captain Valiant
From: Doug Chadwick

I'm looking for the lyrics to a song that I heard several times over the years in sing-a-rounds at the Cleethorpes Folk Festival. It was sung by a lady who lived between Manchester and Wigan (Tyldsey, I think) and was about a lion tamer but sung from the lion's point of view.

All I can remember is:

"Oh, no! Here he comes again
Captain bloody Valiant
Here he comes again
With his chair and his whip
And his pistol at his hip
Like Daniel in the bloody lions' den"

I had promised myself that I would ask her for a copy of the words but she's not been at the festival for the last couple of years. Can anyone help me out?

Well Doug (hi!), that lady would be the cute Ms Theresa Tooley of the Shellback Chorus, also known here at the Mudcat Café as treaties.

If she doesn't appear here shortly, send her a PM, or I'll ask her to drop by.

Good song, and she does it brilliantly!

It's one of the songs from A Duck on His Head - the wonderful Circus show done by Bill Caddick, Tim Laycock and Peter Bond.

We've got a copy of the LP somewhere but I can't lay my hands on it this second. If no one else comes up with the words PM me and I'll find it.

Thanks Noreen. Now you mention her name, Theresa is certainly the Lady I was trying to identify.

The virtual world of Mudcat seems to be getting more solid for me these days. When we met up in Barrow a few weeks ago, I was able to put faces to several names. Now you've helped me put a name to a face.

Doug

I think I may have a recording of it on one of the Whittlebury song and ale tapes if no-one else comes up with the words & I can find it I'll have a go at transcribing the words.

Hi Doug and all, words follow as requested. Sing and enjoy

CAPTAIN VALIANT
(Bill Caddick, Tim Laycock, Peter Bond)
From A DUCK ON HIS HEAD

CHORUS: Oh no! (Oh no!) Oh no! (Oh no!) Here he comes again! (Who?)
It's Captain Bloody Valiant and here he comes again
With his chair and his whip, and his pistol on his hip
Like Daniel in the bloody lion's den.

Have you seen the posters all around the bloody town?
He's standing in his jodhpurs like some bandy legged clown.
It's Captain Bloody Valiant, the fiercest man alive,
And the puny little Pratt, he only measures four feet five;
And he comes in here and makes us jump about.
I'll have him one of these days; you need have no doubt.

Over there's the missus, showing off her teeth.
She's trying to be vicious, but she's docile underneath.
I think she's got distemper. She's acting very strange.
She won't let me go near her. She says I've got the mange.
Is it any wonder I'll soon be bald,
What with sawdust in me ear'oles, me mane and tail and all? CHORUS

It really makes me angry the things we have to try,
Like standing on one leg. Well, it's most undignified.
He's got some leopards, a tiger. It's like a bloody zoo;
And he holds a flaming hoop up, and expects me to jump through.
Then he puts his head into me mouth and I want to scream.
Well, I'd bite it off but I can't stand the taste of his Brylcreem. CHORUS

Sometimes I dream I'm walking down some leafy jungle glade,
With me lioness beside me, and me pride all on parade;
And there's Captain Bloody Valiant, all terrified and numb;
And I take a mighty leap, and I bite him on his bum.
Then I eat him, whip and all, and start to doze.
Then I wake up in me cage with bloody sawdust up me nose. CHORUS (X 2)

Theresa, if you were the blonde animated lady (as in lively, not as in a cartoon) that sang this last weekend at Holmfirth folk festie, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I am the short brunette lass that spotted you in the White Hart and asked you to sing it. My friend and I saw you sing it last year, but my brother missed it, and has been kicking himself ever since as me and my mate recount how ace it was. But now he's seen it, and he's a happy boy. And I've recorded it on my mobile phone and am hoping to use it as a folky ringtone :-) Thanks again, you rock!

Does anyone know where I can get the proper tune for Captain Bloody Valiant? I've heard a few versions in clubs and sessions and they all vary a bit! Is in on a tape, Disc, CD by anyone?

Harking back to an old thread here: can anyone help me find the definitive tune for Captain (Bloody) Valiant?
I've heard quite a few versions in clubs and sessions but they do vary.
Is it on a disc, tape or CD anywhere? Preferably by Bill Caddick/Peter Bond/Tim Laycock!

Molly you should try and get a copy of the cd which has been made of Therasa Tooly's Songs which were recorded at Whittlebury. It has a great version of the song together with eighteen other super tracks all whith the smashing Whittlebury atmosphere It's a steal at a tenner and all the money is going to the motoneurone (can't do the spelling) charity.

Joe Nicholson.

The original is of the Caddick/Laycock/Bond album "A duck on his head!" I have not found it on sale anywhere but I am sure someone on mudcat will be happy to point you in the right direction:-)

Cheers

The entry in BBC Genome for BBC Radio 2 14th June 1982 for Folk on 2, reads "Jim Lloyd introduces Layteek, Caddtck and Bond from the Towersey Festival," (which is of course a mis-type by the BBC, for Laycock Caddick, and Bond). According to my notebook this recording from Towersey was part of a performance of "A Duck on His Head".

The songs broadcast were Winter Quarters / Walk Up / Three Brass Balls / Firey Hoops / Captain Valiant

Caddick Laycock & Bond broadcast on Richard Digance and Friends (London's Capital Radio) on a Sunday in September 1980 playing: fairground organ / miss elle / stay on the line /circus lullaby / see me up see me down / little billie on parade Caddick Laycock, and Bond also broadcast a set of songs entitled "The Man Who Walked Through Walls" on Richard Digance and Friends. My notebook dates this as 1982-06-13, but as this was just one day before the Folk on 2 broadcast I suspect an error in my note keeping. (That said 13th of June was a Sunday that year and the Digance show was broadcast on Sunday evenings ...)

I was able to find a copy of the LP "A Duck on His Head" on Discogs last year. It wasn't too expensive.

Can anyone tell me if The Man Who Walks Through Walls was put onto an LP ? Please PM if you have any information.
