I was going to paste the lyrics of Eillen's song " A Mother's Son " into the greatest anti-war song thread but I think I need to reveal her Identity here. I heard her last summer at the Vancouver Island Folkfest and this song about the Northern Ireland conflict brought tears to my eyes. The song is now part of my repertoire and I have sometimes opened with it to great effect.

A Mother's Son

She walked him to the corner 'til the building came in view
He insisted he could go the rest
Like other big boys do
Seems like only last week
But then is worlds away
Now he holds his mother's hand
With a whole lot left to say
A country raised it's flag halfway before the day was done
A nation rallied 'round its heroes and then took up their guns
The politicians counted sides to see who'd lost and won
But a mother's heart was broken, She'd lost a son
She walked him to the corner
Down the road she walked before
Seeing for the first time
All the things he'd see no more
A twenty year old uniform
They salute in admiration
But coffins draped in colours
Offer little consolation
A country raised it's flag halfway before the day was done...
Iron wills won't bend and they refuse to hear the story
Who will win the race, will it ever end in glory
Carve their names in cold grey stone so that the passerby
Wears crimson coloured flowers, but don't ask "why?"
A country raised it's flag halfway before the day was done...

You can find out about Irish / Canadian Eileen at www. EileenLaverty.com. She has a pure strong sound with those Irish trills. Any of you Canadian Cats heard her ?

I saw Eileen last year at the Nickelodeon Music Club in Calgary. I really enjoyed her show.
