19 Feb 03 - 10:41 AM (#893402) Subject: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: alanww Well, I've just booked a flight. Hurrah! So, along with over 20 other members of the Shellback Chorus(a shanty group with members from all over England), I will be coming to:- 1 The Fall Getaway Festival at Ramblewood, Darlington, Maryland on Fri 17 to Sun 19 Oct AND 2 The Fall Getaway Festival at Camp Isobella Freedman, South Canaan, Connecticut on Fri 25 to Sun 27 Oct. And we hope to meet with members of the Greater Washington Folklore Society and to visit Mystic Seaport at some point during the week in between. Some of us will even be staying on until the weekend after! Not all of the details have been sorted out as yet but it promises to be a trip to remember! Wow, I can feel the excitement mounting, even now! Of course, many of the Shellbacks who are coming are also Mudcatters. At present I can think of Col K, Noreen, Snuffy, Stantheman and SussexCarole but I've no doubt forgotten some Mudcat IDs and will be corrected - apologies in advance! I am certainly looking forward to the events and particularly to meeting as many USA Mudcatters as possible! "For I be free to go abroad ...!" Alan |

Jed Marum just left, Kendall Morse is performing for FSGW in May, and now there's your visit to look forward to. FUN! So, Noreen, you really will get to the Getaway at last, huh? Yayyyy! 22 Feb 03 - 09:33 PM (#896260) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: momnopp As Bill D says, it's so nice to see/hear/feel the buzz for an October event in February (heaven knows we all need it!) The excitement you Shellbacks exude is highly contagious. I can hardly wait for October myself! I wish I had more bathrooms in my house so I could accommodate more bodies comfortably! As it is, I've already put in my "bid" with the powers-that-arrange to house at least one Shellback while you're in the DC area. Max, old man, (hahaha -- he's young even by my standards!!) if you read this, take this as (continued) high praise for the INCREDIBLE "forum" you've created, where so many people can connect over such distances and make the world a smaller, friendlier place. Go, Mudcat! :-) Peace, JudyO |

25 Feb 03 - 10:27 AM (#898260) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Fortunato Noreen is coming to the Getaway? Cool. Great news. And all the Shellback Chorus, eh? Sounds like the Getaway will shift mightily to the seaward. I'll relearn the Queen of Skye to sing with you folks, not my genre, you understand, but if the Red Clay Ramblers could sing it, I can as well. We'll try to put together a singaround at one of our houses here in the Folk Ghetto of Silver Spring if you've time when you're in town. Dress warm, you guys, it's sometimes as cold as a well digger's patoot at the Getaway; you can always take it off you know. Micca did! cheers, Chance |

As Snuffy said the two drivers are coming over on Thursday so should be well rested by the time they start driving. Both of us have lots of experience of driving on the wrong side of the road and are looking foreward to the challenge of the USA driving. Thanks for all the positive responses to our visit we appreciate all the help that is forthcoming even at this stage of the planning. We loved 'em (and they seemed pleased with their warm welcome to D.C. too). See the Getaway 2003 memories thread for my complete description (which I'm sure will be added to by many) of their wonderful music and of their Sunday night "Cinderella" skit featuring, among others, Colin Kemp (who I mistakenly called "Colin Hume" since I'd just been reading about his upcoming English Dance workshop in DC) as the Ugly Stepsister. I fully expect a lot of amusing photos to start cropping up as people get some sleep and start downloading pix. Cheers, Kathy |

The Messengers are hoping to connect with them to, and there'll be some joyful singing going on over here in Derby, if that works. That's Derby to you. Have to get used to that English accent. 23 Oct 03 - 07:25 PM (#1040701) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Jerry Rasmussen My wife Ruth and I just came back from a thoroughly delightful afternoon listening to the Shellbacks at Mystic Connecticut. What a terrific buncha people. And to top it off, they sing! It was such a delight to meet Colin, Sussex Carole, Noreen, Allanww,Theresa, Snuffy and the rest! We took a lot of pictures and I'll see if I can figure out how to get them off to Pene and get them posted. This weekend, the Shellbacks will be at the Pinewoods Camp in Connecticut, but we have other commitments and won't be able to be with them. But, they're coming to our house for Halloween (dressed as Englishmen and women..) and then a sing with the Gospel Messengers, Saturday morning. Now, if we could convince them to stay.. Jerry |
23 Oct 03 - 09:41 PM (#1040761) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Tinker Okay, who actually made it to Wall Street and how did you get by the front desk without being buzzed up???? Jarius came home sorry he couldn't leave for the concert ( a deal suddenly doubled and had to go out by five). And sends apologies he couldn't spend a few minutes showing you around. Of course since he spent the day alternately telling his staff the guitar was a gaitling gun and to get thier asses in gear or that he was going to go down on the street and sing the blues, it would bring in more money than they do... ( Deleuded man has no idea...) Have great fun see you in Newark Tinker |
27 Oct 03 - 04:16 PM (#1042792) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Noreen Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm at Tinker's computer in Montclair New Jersey (I think that's right), after dropping off several Shellbacks at Newark airport and in the middle of New York for various assignations, at the end of the official Shellback part of our US trip. Col, Theresa, Alanww, Carol and I are heading off to Long Island later on after taking of Tinker's hospitality in her wonderful 'funky' house. Judy O may also be coming with us for a while, and there's a get-together planned for tomorrow evening somewhere in Manhattan where remaining Shellbacks are going to meet up with Jerry Epstein and possibly a Johnson Girl or two for a meal. Then on Friday evening we'll go trick-or-treating at Jerry Rasmussen's and have a grand sing with his Gospel Messengers on Saturday. My mind is so full of singing and new friends and singing at South St Seaport under Brooklyn Bridge and singing on board the Charles W Morgan at Mystic that I'm sure this won't be a coherent post. Suffice it to say that we are having a wonderful time, being made exceedingly welcome (and being asked back!) and we all send our love, particularly to those who would wish to be with us and cannot be. |

We will scheme with you to make it happen! Take good care and have fun! (he said, nibbling on Cadbury's) |
27 Oct 03 - 05:13 PM (#1042817) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: alanww I, too, am at Tinkers and I won't repeat Noreen's details of where we have been and what we will be doing ... All I can say is that we've had a wonderful time and have so many fantastic memories. Just one of them was swapping concertina experiences and tunes with Chris Koldewey and teaching him the Rochdale Coconut Dance and the Top Top Polka. (Chris is the friend of Joy Bennet, a Johnson Girl) and he is a shantyman at Mystic Seaport). I look forward to seeing them both at Lancaster Shanty Festival next Easter and will be pleased to catch the Johnson Girls' tour in July/Aug, which includes Warwick, Sidmouth and Broadstairs Folk Festivals. The main impression, however is one of a very generous and welcoming set of folkies. Such big hearts! "Storms hang about the closing day ...!" Alan * There is a storm warning at present. |
27 Oct 03 - 09:39 PM (#1042950) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Tinker Well Jarius is off to Penn Station to connect folks with the LIRR and the rest of their journey. We watched the Getaway Shellback concert and part of Sunday's concert while folks were here. The laughter just kept on and on.... Theresa and Carole helped me assemble the singing dancing skeleton and hang it in the kitchen .. Very tacky and of course we all sang along. I finally got to show of my "pub" to real Mudcatters as well as all the odd bits and pieces of this house that haven't changed since the twenties. Absolutely great guests... the kind you can leave to drop off and pick up kids and know they'll find what they need and care for themselves... Can we do it again???? |

I've just gotten home after spending a total of 10 hours on the road (for what should have been a 5 hour trip; but that included naps and horrid traffic and pouring rain) after spending the most lovely day with Shells and other silly people in New York City yesterday (I drove all night, basically). You lot (Shellbacks) are at least as wonderful as you accuse us of being! It has been such fun getting to know and spend time with you all and just bask in the mutual admiration society :-). I can't wait to meet up with some/any/all of you again soon! It was loads of fun playing tourist with a gang of crazy Brits (and David Kleiman) in Manhattan (The Shells Take Manhattan?)and singing and drinking in a NY pub and dining in a Hungarian restaurant...talk about a culturally diverse day! Perhaps I'll get some sleep before I try to do anything coherent... I miss you guys already! Peace, JudyO |

Both of these places are about half way along the south side of Long Island (hope you can follow the technical description) and Barbara's house is just a short walk from the ocean. Wow. We went into New York City yesterday on the train (Long Island Rail Road) for the gathering described above, and had a wonderful tour guide in David Kleiman who entertained us with information and anecdotes on our walk and on the Staten Island ferry. Day went so quickly. Today we were invited to a lunch with her local Rotary group and sang for them....! Then we had a tour of the local brew pub where the meeting was held, and sampled all their wares. Surprised I'm typing coherently :0) and it's only 4pm. Lovely to read all the other feedback from folks here and at home, thank you! |

The singing (despite the barman!) at the old pub was real fun ... we then had a great meal and seeing momnpop, Jerry Epstein and Joy Bennet of the Johnson Girls again was a real treat. The remaining five of us are now enjoying the pleasures of Long Island, so far today including a Rotary lunch (with us singing a song) and a brewery trip with a tasting! Later on we will be singing to a few people at the local theatre and another, more lengthly, visit to the home brew pub ... smashing hospitality! "Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry ...!" They arrived at the house in costume, after a long and tiring trip up here to Derby, from Long Island. Our son Pasha, his wife Nina and our Grandson Little Pasha had come over to meet our English friends, and we just had a great time talking and eating. No singing, if you can believe it. But, it was late, we were all tired, and tomorrow morning we'll sing the roof off the house with our friends, the rest of the Gospel Messengers and an old friend of mine, Karen Kobela here as well. And, I think I'm starting to understand English... Jerry |

I MISS THE SHELLS!!! The Shellback Chorus was wonderful to listen to both collectively and individually. Their songs and their personalities helped to make our vacation more memorable than we thought possible. Noreen sings Irish ballads that can melt the coldest heart. Theresa, Ruth, Jim and Col will forever be my Thespian buddies. Snuffy and Clive have to send me the lyrics to "Sideways". Stuart and Denise are fabulous. Each of the Shells added something unique to their overall performance. Shellbacks are the best. Thanks for coming over to America and sharing all your wonderful talents. Tawmmie and I will try very hard to find a way to come over to England and share some songs with you all again. Got to go get some sleep, we've been up for 26 hours straight. Best wishes, Mike |

Watching our bass singer Joe, and Colin, head to head, singing bass together on some of the old gospel was so delightful, it was hard not to just stop singing and enjoy the two of them. The internet has made the world seem smaller, but actually getting from one place to another is sometimes a very long distance still. I have sent off a bunch of Getaway pictures to Pene for publication in the Events section of Mudcat photos. I have hundreds more photos to go through and label before I lose track of who everyone is. I have finally caught up on most of my backlog of sleep and must go back to work tomorrow so Tawmmie and I can save up enough money to go see our new friends again before we retire. Love to you all, Mike |
03 Nov 03 - 10:56 AM (#1046824) Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Ferrara Aaahhhh. It is truly marvelous to hear about your trip, folks. It's good to know that "it was good for you, too." Your presence certainly was a gift for all the people who had the good fortune to meet you, spend time with you and listen or sing with you while you were here. Was with some friends last night including Ron Davies & Jan (Cicadas, etc) and David & Lucy (harp & guitar), and the Shellbacks' contribution to the Getaway was mentioned a LOT. One of the neat things of being a folkie married to a folkie is the shared references & little in-jokes that come up naturally. Last night on our way to Ron's we were behind an idiot woman who had her car crossways across the left lane at a no-turns intersection and wouldn't even straighten out and drive across the intersection when a cop pulled up to her, lights flashing. After we passed her, Bill commented on how she wouldn't go forward and I said, to the appropriate tune, "No -- She Did It -- SIDEWAYS." :-D Cheers, Rita |

My arrival in the USA was made so much easier because of the kindness of Tinker and her family all of whom made me welcome in their home. That night we had to sort out last minute problems. After meeting the rest of the gang at Newark and telling them of the last minute changes we went for the minibuses at Union(NJ) and then went to collect people landing at Newark and JFK airports.Onwards to the Getaway where our welcome was like meeting old friends. That feeling continued all weekend. Then we had Jeri's car on the stump, before we made our way to our host families where, without exception,we were made to feel at home and part of the family, thanks from me to Judy O (momnopp) for looking after me so well. Party time at the Cook's on tuesday rounded off our visit to Washington area, wednesday we headed back towards New York, driving down Broadway at 3.30pm as a first taste of New York traffic. South St in the evening at the seamans mission was well attended, thanks to all who came.Driving on to Newburgh for the night found us driving through snow on the way. Thursday in Mystic was a wonderful time, singing in the chapel was special. From Mystic we headed north towards Falls Village for the New York Society Getaway, another warm welcome for us, which continued through the night, the huts were heated. On sunday we left there heading homewards, one last night as a group in the motel, then on monday,to New York to drop off people in various places before returning the minibuses.Once again Tinker and her family, and Judy O were superb in looking after Carole,Theresa, Noreen and Alan while I took the buses back.Jarius then ran the five of us to Penn Station where we caught the train onto Long Island to stay with Barbara Hoffman(now joined mudcat as seahorse). We were her house guests for 4 nights. On the tuesday we saw much more of New York thanks to David Kleiman who took a day off work to show us around. Then on friday we went to Derby to meet Jerry Rasmussen and Ruth for Halloween and on Sat morning we went back to have a sing with the Gospel Messengers. The other 4 then left and I stayed for the night with Jerry, going to church with them on sunday before they drove me back to JFK in time for my flight home. There are so many people that I have not mentioned, you all made the trip so memorable,my thanks to you all. Also my thanks to Derek Seed, the leader of the Shellbacks for doing so much arranging and also thanks to all the Shellbacks for being such wonderful travelling companions throughout the whole trip. So many people, so many memories Roll on another year. THANK YOU ALL |
