Kentucky mountain music box set - dates?

Subject: Kentucky mountain music box set
From: Stewie

Yazoo label is about to release a 7-CD box set titled 'Kentucky Mountain Music'. I have seen release dates of later this month and early March. The Shanachie site has no track listings, but it has this snippet of info:

As the Mississippi Delta is to blues, Kentucky is to fiddle music, banjo playing, and classic old ballads and songs. No other state comes even close in terms of amazing diversity of styles and just pure prodigious amounts of great classic performances.

This 7-CD box set contains almost 200 all-time great performances by some of the finest country musicians who ever lived. Since all of the recordings are from the 1920s and 1930s, it's as close to ultimate sources as anything can be. Included in the box set is a thick 5 x 11 booklet containing stunning period photos of many of the musicians included, and copious background notes.

It should be a pretty amazing collection.

Our Dick Greenhaus at Camsco Music will be able to get 'em for us at a reasonable price and return a wee bit to Max when he does. Please keep him in mind, and keep it in the family. The 2 Kentucky CDs I have from Yazoo are absolutely superb. I look forward to these new ones eagerly!

At the risk of attracting Joe's ire for a cut-and-paste job - although it was really a cut-and-paste and reformat job - I will post this review from Pat Conte of Secret Museum of the Air. Still no track listing, but this gives some idea of the genesis and quality of the project. This review was posted to the old-time country newsgroup. The Secret Museum of the Air, a fascinating site, may be found HERE.

The set is magnificent and a great monument to Guthrie Meade who initiated all the original plans for at least a ten lp set, or even 12, back in the years before the Morningstar lps. Richard Nevins has taken it to new heights and hascarefully honed the program into a stunning journey in the sound of the era.

The notes are not intended to be a platform for intense scholarly ramblings but just enough to aid enjoyment and not enough to mire down a listener with microscopic treatises. It's just enough; in fact the CD tray cards are just about blank, the booklet having all you need in addition to truly remarkable images which you may have seen (for the most part) a thousand tmes, but not with this clarity. There are some new images or relatively rarely published
ones. Bill Stepp will cause a smile and Justice Begley is rather magnificent.

The departure from just a Gennett-based central theme, as the lps started off, is augmented into a no-holds-barred panorama of the other commercial concerns which dabbled with Kentucky musicians to select field trips from the AFS, and this editorial approach is purely from the standpoint of musical bliss rather than any systematic regional study. Scholars can be left to resort, redig, reshuffle and arrange in tables and charts with facts and figures, as Walt Whitman might say. Those of this news group past the phase of life that needs things arranged in chronologies and completeness regardless of how good the music is will easily find the price painless. I don't think it is right, as it is too easy, to review something and spend other people's money, but all I can say is you can buy Cliff Notes, Classics Comics illustrated, a heavily annotated Norton edition with literary criticisms and period essays, OR you can just buy the damned book that interests you and sit down and let it unfold and enjoy the hell out of it.

The sound quality is of the usual high standard at Yazoo...and not all of that is technical wizardry. In one case, Cumberland Gap by Burnett & Rutherford, a search for a copy that had decent sound took literally decades. For the last 40 years, most collections would have resorted to a mis-pressed, weak recording that never played with any clarity in the best condition or with the best studio surgery. The fluke was an unexplained run that produced a beautiful, clear copy that turned up mysteriously and unexpectedly and is used here. Few can identify with such a passion to reissue the best possible sound, and make the music sound like it did the day it was played into the microphone. That kind of passion defines what a "living" collection should be, and to have it it assembled in one box is a matter of the greatest service a living collection can be if it now may reside any place and anywhere on these little shiny discs being played out of a machine in your pocket.

As someone who also has anthologised under great joy and agony mixed, I am enthralled to hold and gaze on this set, as I know it represents a family album, as personal as an album of family and friends that have lived and touched a listener's heart...musician or not, scholar or not. It's crafted to be constantly replayed and devoured and lived with. [Posting by Pat Conte to old-time music newsgroup]

How's that for timing. I just watched Songcatcher (I'm not kidding 'Spaw). I'm sure the boxset will be a lot better than the movie. I hope that it's reasonably priced.

I received a copy of this set yesterday. I have not listened to all 7 discs yet, but I can sum it up as "amazing".

Pat Conte summed it up more eloquently than I could, but I would like to add my thoughts.

These recordings have been "cleaned" up and sound superb.   Some purists may take issue with cleaning, but as Richard Nevins said in the liner notes, this set is meant for entertainment. Entertain it does. Educate too. This set shows the depth and diversity of music found in Kentucky in the 1920's and 1930's. It is a combination of commercial recordings and field recordings.   The very first cut, Burnett & Rutherford doing "Ladies on the Mountain" just bowled me over.

I know that a lot of care went into this project. This is a set that we will be talking about for years to come. Thank you Richard & Shanachie!!

Ron

Looks like the price is $90 at Amazon and at Collectors' Choice Music. How much documentation comes with the music, Ron? That's one thing about the Yazoo collections that I found disappointing - the CD booklets don't give a whole lot of information. The recordings are old, and sometimes hard to understand. A transcription of the lyrics would really help. -Joe Offer-

Joe,

About the booklet that accompanies the set, let me quote Richard Nevins in the liner notes - "the entire orientation of this project has been purely entertainment, not academics, and we hope you'll find it both enjoyable and gratifying."

The booklet contains some very beautiful pictures of the artists that I find fascinating. The quality of the art is superb. The notes in the booklet are typical of liner notes, it is more of a commentary or history if you will as opposed to a text book source. An interesting read that gives you an idea of the sessions, the artists and the music - but it will not be considered a source document for learning tunes.

The track listing booklet does not get bogged down with recording dates, although you can find MOST of that information by reading the commentary. There are no lyrics included, but you will find the sound quality surprising good and very listenable. This is not like many of the other collections I have heard. A great deal of time has been spent on re-mastering.   Nevins says in the notes that the approach was to highlight the dynamics and tone of the performances and supress the inherent noise as much as possible without detracting from the music.   On many of the originals, the performers were too far away from the mic, but the remastering has done a great service to "repair" the sound.

Ron

It's not out yet--due March 11 or so. CAMSCO can't quote a price yet, because I haven't found out what it costs me, but I've generally been able to beat Collectors Choice prices and can usually match or beat CDUniverse's.

A wee bit of ordering patience can help both CAMSCO and Mudcat.

From: graywolf1980

I have read a few of the comments posted here about the Kentucky Mountain Music 7 CD set on Yazoo. I totally agree that is it fabulous!

Most of these perfomers was not famous, but lived and worked on farms in rural Kentucky. I wonder if any of the descendants of these musicians know about this set? Any descendants on this board?

I have only read the booklet that accompanied this set once when I first got it, so I may not recall correctly, but is it possible that Yazoo/Sanachie will remaster and release the songs NOT included on this set? I believe only one or two copies existed for many of these recordings, and personally, I want more!
I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic.

Hi, Graywolf - take a look at the Website of Yazoo Records. Kentucky Mountain Music is only one of many sets that are available. I started out trying to get all of them, but got swamped in CD's.
One thing - I wish the CD booklets had lyrics printed. The recordings have been nicely restored, but some are still hard to understand. Maybe that's something we listeners should do - click here to see what mustrad.org has done with Topic's Voice of the People series. Maybe we could annotate the Yazoo recordings in the same way. I'll do my best to put links in the list above if we have threads on any of the songs.

Joe is right about the poor documentation of Yazoo releases, and he could have made a similar observation about the standards of their remastering. However, Topic, who crop up somewhere in this thread, can afford to subsidise their traditional releases from profits made elsewhere. Hence, with Topic, lavish booklets, quality discographical information and painstaking remastering are the order of the day.

Yazoo, on the other hand, is owned by Shanacie, and while Shanacie is a large independent roots company which appears happy to support Yazoo's meagre sales, I doubt their business ethic would extend to the subsidisation of expensive booklets.

So, while I accept and share Joe's reservation, the sheer quality of most Yazoo releases makes me extremely thankful that they're still issuing records - with or without high quality documentation.

And if there's anyone out there who still hasn't got the Kentucky Mountain set, grab one quick. You have yet to discover how wonderful music can be.

From: GUEST,Hootenanny

From the very beginning when the label was setup and owned by Nick Perls and was almost entirely devoted to pre WW2 blues the Yazoo label or Belzona as it once was has never given discographical information. There is usually information on the performers where available and the notes usually were very informative on the chord structure, keys etc of the material issued which would be pickers probaby found very useful. For anyone seriously interested in discography most of this was available at the time in Dixon and Godrich's Blues & Gospel Records. As I pointed out above Tony Russell's book does the same job for old time country music. Personally I find the booklet enclosed in the Kentucky Box Set to be more than adequate and very nicely produced.I can think of hardly one issue on Yazoo from L-1001 onward that I would like to be without.
Without this label the knowledge of we who appreciate pre-war blues and old time music would be very much poorer. In my Book Shanachie and Rich Nevins continue doing an excellent job
Topic of course do an excellent job for British folk music but as the bulk of their material is from their own recordings and not from re-issues of commericial pre-war recordings, and as there is no readily available discography in the bookshops for ther material it is a completely different situation.
Incidentally for those not aware of other labels issuing old time country music I would recommend the excellent Old Hat label out of Raleigh North Carolina which does an excellent job in every respect including lavish booklets. County out of Floyd, Virginia is another.

I guess I should add that I have no commercial interest in any of these organisations, just an appreciation of what they have done to bring me a continuing enjoyment of some great music.

And for a mix of Old-Timey and classic country music (1925-1952 or so), Take a look at the British Archive of Country Music's list (all available from CAMSCO at $12.95 per).
Other useful labels are Old Homestead, Document, Dust-To-Digital, and, of course, Smithsonian Folkways. CAMSCO carries 'em all.
