Hi,

Are there more than 4 verses to this one? I seem to remember there were more but I can't think what they were...

the verses I have start

Land of the silver birch.....
My heart is sick for you.....
There where the blue lake lies....
Swift as a silver fish.....

Alison, if this is the same one I know, the second verse is:
High on a rocky ledge, I build my wig-wam
Close to the water's edge, silent and still
Is that the same one? Blessings,
Barbara

Hi,

Yes that's the same one. I think I remember it as, "There where the blue lake lies, I'll set my wigwam"

It was a long time ago.......

I only know the first verse and the one mentioned by Barbara. Alison, could you provide those others? My kids at school really like this one, even though I guess its authenticity is questionable! (BTW, I'm Allison, too, but use the name of my chorus to avoid confusion!)

Here you go Allison,

Land of the Silver Birch

Land of the silver birch, home of the beaver
Where still the mighty moose wanders at will

CHORUS

Blue lake and rocky shore, I will return once more
Boom - diddi - eye -dee
Boom - diddi - eye -dee
Boom - diddi - eye -dee
Boom

My heart is sick for you, here in the lowlands,
I will return to you, hills of the north

Swift as the silver fish, canoe of birch bark
Thy might waterways carry me forth

There where the blue lake lies, I'll set my wigwam
Close to the water's edge, silent and still

I know sometimes the chorus was done as hi-ya-a-hi-ya (which probably would sound a bit more like Indians.)

This one deserves a 'Lyr Add' heading.

I can add little, but the chorus, as I recall, (and the above spellings are in no way phonetic)

Boom (bum, with 'u' as in 'put') diddy eye die,
...repeat
Bum diddy eye die
Bum

Listed in "The Hackney Scout Song Book (1957)" (Where it was included for the first time, following the 1922 edition) as a 'Red Indian canoeing song'

Here's a little more of "the folk process at work for you..."

I learned it like this:

Land of the Silver Birch

Land of the silver birch, home of the beaver
Where still the mighty moose wanders at will

CHORUS
Blue lake and rocky shore, I will return once more
Boom-di-di-boom-boom
Boom-di-di-boom-boom
Boom-di-di-boom-boom
Boom-boom

Swift as a silver fish, my canoe of birch bark
By mighty waters carried afar

Down where the blue lake lies, I'll build my wigwam
Under the shining stars, I'll sing my song

Yep, that's it...
Nice job, Barry!
I think I learned the song in elementary school from a teacher who was recalling it from memory...I have a little different tune--the second line is up a third--from what I've heard anyone else sing. It's in my head, though, and so that's how I sing it...Again, "your folk process at work..." A bunch of children have learned it from me, and now sing it that way, too...

We really did sing this at Girl Guide camp back in the 50's our version was an amalgam of the versions above but it would be fairer to describe it as having come from the 'Hacknied Guide Song Book' - or perhaps that just the way we sang it!

Old thread Alison but I'm prety sure the Singing Together version used "hi-ya-a-hi-ya". dave McG has most of my old schools pamphlets at the moment but hopefully that version will come out with Kernow John's project.

This was the original Canadian version of

LAND OF THE SILVER BIRCH

My paddle's keen and bright
Flashing with silver
Follow the wild goose flight
Dip, dip and swing
Dip, dip and swing her back
Flashing with silver
Swift as the wild goose flies
Dip, dip and swing

Land of the silver birch
Home of the beaver
Where still the mighty moose
Wanders at will
Blue lake and rocky shore
I will return once more
Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom

High on a rocky ledge
I¹ll build my wigwam
Close to the water¹s edge
Silent and still
Blue lake and rocky shore
I will return once more
Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom

My heart grows sick for thee
Here in the lowlands
I will return to thee hills of the north
Blue lake and rocky shore
I will return once more
Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom

Land of the silver birch
Home of the beaver
Where still the mighty moose
Wanders at will
Blue lake and rocky shore
I will return once more
Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom

Meow ... Thanks for posting the correct version of this song.

Katrina .... Here are the chords ... You might have to transpose them or use a capo to adjust to your vocal key .

You alternate between Em and C thoughout the first verse and for the dip dip and swing and boom diddy-ah-da, boom-diddy-ah-da, boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom part .

This is the traditional way to sing the song but with some added dip dip and swings , which round out the song nicely .

LAND OF THE SILVER BIRCH

Em          C
My paddle's keen and bright
Em            C
Flashing with silver
Em          C
Follow the wild goose flight
Em          C
Dip, dip and swing
Em          C
Dip, dip and swing her back
Em            C
Flashing with silver
Em            C
Swift as the wild goose flies
Em          C
Dip, dip and swing

Em          C
Land of the silver birch
Em          C
Home of the beaver
Am             G
Where still the mighty moose
F          G
Wanders at will

Am            G
Blue lake and rocky shore
F      G
I will return once more
Em          C
Dip dip and swing
Em          C
Dip dip and swing
Em                C                Em                C
Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom

I like to repeat the refrain as written ( land of the silver birch verse ) and then return to the first verse ( My paddle's keen and bright ) to end the song , as it returns again to the beginning melody and gives the song a more finished sound ...You can also add several dip dip and swings and boom -diddy-ahda's to end the song .

Hm,well wouldn't like to dispute a Canadian, but we had them as 2 separate songs with 2 different tunes, one almost being an inversion of the other. We used to do "My paddle" as a 2-part round, so some people would be doing the dip-dip, while others were singing the "my paddle" line. "Land of the Siver Birch" is as in Barry's midi.

There are several different versions of this song , but the original is posted above by Meow .

Even Wikipedia has it wrong , in saying that it's two different songs .

It's true that there are two different melodies , the first two being different from the third etc... and it does sound very much like an inverted melody .

If you want to hear part of an excellent rendition of this song by Michael Mitchell , check out this link .

Boom-diddy-ah-da- boom boom   X4, sung by one group
meanwhile, a second group sings

Land of the silver birch
home of the beaveer
where once the mighty moose wandered at will
blue lakes and rocky shores
there I'll return once more
Boom-diddy-ah-da- boom boom
-------

This is my favorite camp song. I seemed to be the only one in Senior camp that had ever heard it, but sometimes I would be able to start it with an older counselor nearby (and then we would shout it and have an all-counselor + Alex singing affair.)

It has been asserted (above) that Land of the Silver Birch and My Paddle's Keen & Bright were originally one and the same song; however, no evidence has been provided. Consequently, those of us who were skeptical remain so. I find it more likely that someone noticed that My Paddle could be added to Silver Birch, and did so, rather than that someone took one verse of Silver Birch and created or found another tune for it.

I'm prepared to believe that they were one song with two tunes, but we did sing them as 2 separate ones: guess the 2 tunes tunes would also harmonise with each other.
Have listened to the Michael Mitchell midi and that corresponds to what I knew as "My paddle" etc.
For "Land of the Silver Birch" we sang (if in Amin)
Land of the Silver Birch
A      AA      EEE,
Home of the Beaver
A      AA    E E,
Where once the mighty moose
A'       GA'       GEC
Wandered at will
DD       D E,

A'       GA'    GEC
I will return once more
DD    D ECA,
Boom diddy I dee Boom diddy I dee boom diddy I dee boom
A      AA   AC    A    AA    AC    A    AA    AC    A

My sister used to sing this song in the guides, and play it on her recorder. I can't tell what your tunes are, but it seemed slightly jerky with a weird timing. Anyway, this is all I can recall of it:

    Land of the Silver Birch,
    Home of the Beaver,
    Where mighty yellow Moon
    Wanders at will;
    Blue lake and rocky shore,
    I will return once more....
    I will return again.

    Here in the lowlands
My heart will sing to you
    Under the Heaven-sky
    Silent and blue;
    Home in the Northlands,
    Swift as the wild Goose,
    I will return to you.

    Here, by the Forest,
    I'll set my wigwam,
    Under the silver Stars,
    Silent and still;
    Where mighty River flows,
    Where mighty Spirit knows......
    I will return to you.

There are shades of Hiawatha in this song, don't you think?

                              Indrani.

Oh Yea! This was one of my all-time favorites at Camp Whip-Poor-Will Hills in Morrow,Ohio (1953-1957).

"Land of the Silver Birch,
Home of the beaver,
Where once the mighty moose,
Wandered at will.
Blue lake and rocky shore,
I will return once more,
Boomdidiahda,boomdidiahda,boo-oo-oom.

High on a rocky ledge,
I'll build my wigwam,
Close to the forest's edge,
Silent and still.
Blue lake and rocky shore,
I will return once more,
Boomdidiahda,boomdidiahda,boo-oo-oom.

Swift as a silver fish,
Canoe of birch bark,
O're mighty waterways,
Carry me forth.
Blue lake and rocky shore,
I will return once more,
Boomdidiahda,boomdidiahda,boo-oo-oom.

My heart grows sick for thee,
Here in the lowlands,
I will return to thee,
Hills of the north.
Blue lake and rocky shore,
I will return once more,
Boomdidiahda,boomdidiahda,boo-oo-oom."

Frankly,"boomdidiahda" never seemed authentically Native American to me,but who am I to question the larger wisdom of camp songs?

This song has a lovely melody which I can't begin to describe. Anyone out there know where the tune came from and can explain it?
