I think I learned the song in elementary school from a teacher who was recalling it from memory...I have a little different tune--the second line is up a third--from what I've heard anyone else sing. We used to do "My paddle" as a 2-part round, so some people would be doing the dip-dip, while others were singing the "my paddle" line. "Land of the Siver Birch" is as in Barry's midi. |

Even Wikipedia has it wrong , in saying that it's two different songs . It's true that there are two different melodies , the first two being different from the third etc... and it does sound very much like an inverted melody . Consequently, those of us who were skeptical remain so. I find it more likely that someone noticed that My Paddle could be added to Silver Birch, and did so, rather than that someone took one verse of Silver Birch and created or found another tune for it. |
