If you type Vincent into the Filter box, set the Age drop-down to All and press the Refresh button, you'll find a handfull of threads about the song. One from 99 has the words, one from 01 (IIRC) has links to tabs and chords.

The Del McCoury Band did a killer Bluegrass verison of this song on Last Year's Del & The Boys CD. It won IBMA's Song of The Year. The one change that he makes is Down to Knoxville they did ride, as to opposed to the original Boxhill.

1952 VINCENT BLACK LIGHTNING
(Richard Thompson)
From the album "Rumor and sigh"

Said Red Molly to James that's a fine motorbike,
A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, well my hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride

Said James to Red Molly, here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And If fate should break my stride
I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they've taken young James adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
Said I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Said young James. in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do
They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he gave her the keys
He said I don't have any further use for these
I see angels and ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
He gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.

Extensively discussed here in the past, as MCP indicated. The lyrics have been posted here at least twice already, and can be found quite easily through the onsite search engine.

If you visit Richard Thompson's own web site,(BEESWEB - the Official Richard Thompson website) there is a section called "SONG-O-MATIC" which will find you ANY of Richards song lyrics.
You can also find tour dates, interview transcriptds and all sorts of other RT stuff.
The site is well worth bookmarking in your browser.
Quack!

Just recorded RT for Mr Kershaw for TX in a few weeks time....
He didn't do VBL, but 5 other goodies!!
Seemed to be on top form as well. Sadly can't make any of his South England Gigs..So, for those who can, enjoy.

The documentary about Richard Thompson is being repeated tomorrow night on BBC4 (Sunday 2-3-03 11.10pm). Well worth watching. Some snatches of a live performance of this song. Excellent stuff.

Anyone got the chords to "My Sweetheart's On the Barricades?"

Anytime you feel jaded because folk songs are too easy to learn, try a Thompson. I've never gotten completely comfortable with one in less than a year or so of obsessing.
