(temporarily) From: Mark Cohen So I was playing with our gradually-turning-into-an-Irish-band at Kelley O'Neill's Irish Pub in Waikiki, and there was this incredibly good whistle player sitting in. He played some screaming reels and jigs, with Curtis, the real musician in the band, backing him on guitar or playing mandolin, while the rest of us struggled to keep up, or just sat back and listened--what a blast! After the session, we were talking and he mentioned my Mudcat T-shirt, which I just happened to be wearing. Turns out that he's a Mudcatter, too, though he says he's pretty much of a lurker. My memory being what it is these days, I've forgotten his Mudcat name. He was leaving in a couple of days, but he says he comes to Hawaii periodically to teach. (temporarily) From: Mark Cohen P.S., for the record, we play at Kelley O'Neill's on the second and fourth Sundays of every month, from 4 to 7 PM. I was told it was an open jam session, but when I showed up there was a sign outside that said "Live Irish music inside", and we're sort of the house band on those afternoons. The "regulars" are the aforementioned Curtis, who plays guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, whistle, and bodhran, and sings, all wonderfully; two flute players, one of whom also plays whistle; a harper, who comes sometimes; an outstanding fiddler, who comes less often; and two earnest guitarists, including yours truly, who also sings sometimes. It's very much an open session, so feel free to wander in. And the beach is nice, too. Aloha, Mark |

(temporarily) From: Mark Cohen The Polynesian Cultural Center is in La'ie, which is on the north side of the island of O'ahu, not near Waikiki (well, true, it's "near" compared with Philadelphia or France!), and it is quite touristy. There's lots of good, real Hawaiian music around the islands, if you dig a little deeper...the Honolulu Weekly has a good calendar for O'ahu, and you can also find it on Maui and on the Big Island of Hawai'i. (temporarily) From: Banjo-Flower Thanks Mark will do that if ever we come again I would have contacted you before our visit but was under strict instructions from she who must be obeyed that this was the holiday of a lifetime (Singapore,New Zealand & Hawaii((Ohau)and to leave behind things we do at home (banjo,s sessions etc)and just relax, chill out and as you Hawaiians(have I spelt that right ? ) put it HANG LOOSE and do all the touristy things so we did just that and had a whale of a time including seeing a whale surfacing from one of the catamarans in Honolulu Bay Best Regards Gerry |
