Hi,

Can anyone tell me who performed the song "Seasons in the Sun"-- as in "We had joy we had fun, we had seasons in the sun......."

Thanks, Mir

Terry Jacks had a hit with it.

I believe it was originally written and performed by Steve Bennett, an underappreciated singer/songwriter still working out of Columbia, SC.

Hi,

we had joy we had fun, we had streakers in the sun
but the joy didn't last 'cos the streakers ran too fast.

Sorry couldn't resist it...... we used to sing it in the playground at primary school.

Jacques Brel has written this song and it was called "Adieu Émile" or also "Le moribond" then. "Seasons in the sun" is a but translation which both in melody and in lyrics has gone some way from the (I think: better) French original.

Brel also penned Ne Me Quitte Pas (If You Go Away). Again, I prefer the French version. Which is the original?

Hi,

Here's the original thread..... still looks like you have to go to International lyrics server to get the lyrics.

SEASONS IN THE SUN
English words: Rod McKuen, 1964
French words & music by Jacques Brel, titled "Le Moribund"

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we were nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
When all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me,
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
Wonder how I get along.

Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
Like the seasons, have all gone.

Goodbye, Michelle, my little one.
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach.

Editorial comment: My ex loved Rod McKuen. I didn't. Still don't.

Le Moribond
Jacques Brel, 1961

I had (perhaps still have) a Rod McKuen version on a good old vinyl LP. Rather than a wife, Michelle, of whom he had fond memories, that version had a verse along the lines of (give or take a word or two) -

Farewell, Francoise, my lovely(?) wife Without you I'd have had a lonely life. You cheated lots of times - but then, I forgave you in the end, Though your lover was my friend.

Goodbye, Francoise, it's hard to day, When all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. With the flowers ev'rywhere. I wish that we could both be there.

I'd like to revive this link, because I think that both the French version by Brel and the translation by McKuen of Seasons in the Sun are great songs.   Terry Jacks, unfortunately, butchered the translation by trying to make it palatable to audiences who wanted something maudlin rather than the bitter-sweet complexity of the originals.

But (as I mentioned in another post), I have a favorite version by Pearls Before Swine (Tom Rapp)off the City of Gold LP, where he adds a verse I hadn't heard before that starts:

Adieu my Priest, please pray for me
Though we were divided by a giant sea
Each man must chart a different course
But in the end........(forgotten the rest)

Does anybody know where that verse may have come from?

The pearls before swine version, also my favorite, has the line ending with the phrase we all meet in the same port. As in "but in the end of course, we all meet in the same port." I might be wrong on the middle "of course." Then they added: "adieu my priest,it's hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that spring is in the air, many roads lead everywhere, look around and I'll be there."

Right! Now I remember. A great addition to the song. I wonder if Tom Rapp wrote that verse himself or whether he found another translation somewhere.

The credits on the recording don't say Rapp added any verses.
