Thought some folks might find this interesting: click. I'd also be interested in hearing what any of you might know about Edsel Martin and his dulcimers. The ad says some of his are in the Smithsonian.

Thanks,

kat

Edsel's instruments were almost always made with the scroll ending in a beautiful carving of a woman's head, facing as though she were looking down the length of the fretboard. All I ever saw of his, had this feature.

Thanks, hard to tell whether this one has that or not, from the pix. I know I can't afford it, anyway, but did find it interesting.

I'm not familiar with this maker and can only wonder what the reserve is on the instrument. Looks like wood tuning pegs....a purist's delight maybe but an fixable complaint for the rest of us. I've never seen a dulcimer with proportions quite like this one.

Well, I did a little searching and found info on David Massingill which included this bit:

Massengill plays a mountain dulcimer created by Edsel Martin, a master whose dulcimers, famed for their extra long bodies and beautiful carvings, are displayed in the Smithsonian. He went on to a tell a long story about Martin and the Liars' Club, which led directly to his song in tribute of Martin, "The Whittlin' Boy."

Still looking for direct info on Martin.

Thanks

Sorry! I can just remember Kathleen Turner in "Peggy Sue Got Married" talking to her father.
"My God, you bought an Edsel?!!!"

All I know is Edsel Martin is a Cherokee. I have seen David Mass. and his instrument and found nothing very remarkable about it. Nice sound though. But again, nothing extra. Very well made.

Nigel, I'm sure you know that Edsel is (was?) also an automobile... our first auto purchase after our marriage was a Kaiser, sort of kin to the Edsel I guess, same era. It was the first car to have a hatch-back; the whole trunk lid and car-back lifted up for loading. We loved it and if we had hung onto it, we'd be very wealthy now!

Chance- I'm fine, and friend Ron's fine too, haven't heard from him in awhile. He's working hard, getting ready for his sabbatical next year.

Katlaughing- I have some old correspondence from Edsel- we used to see each other occasionally at festivals, etc. I think he contributed a song for that old Newport Songbook. Whoever got that on the Auction? Might be able to tell you- meanwhile I'll try to find it here, in my chaotic den.          Jean

Hi, Jean, thank you. No rush, I can relate to the "chaotic" state.

Looks as thought it was "voyager" who got the Newport book.

Thanks, again, everyone.

Kat L, I found my copy of The Newport Song Book in said Chaotic Den, but no Edsel Martin therein. Now I have to go into the Chaotic Den of my mind, and research my recollections- to satisy myself if no one else.

Kat, as a part of my job at the Ozark Folk Center, I recorded this 10 inch LP in February, 2002. Sorry I can't remember all that much about what it was like ~~ I am usually doing other tasks while the LPs are being transferred to the hard drive. Plus, with so many hundreds of recordings in memory, you are bound to lose track of some! (I should say I am bound to lose track) I'll TRY to give it a listen at work and report back in a week or two.

At any rate, it gives you something to look for, though I rather imagine that they are in short supply.
