Tech: Midis won't play

On trying to listen to Midis in the DT, I can't get it to play.I don't think it is anyones fault but mine. Any suggestions as to what I can check to find the problem? Jim

Here's one possibility. Say I open a music program, such as Noteworthy, and after a while I minimize it. Then I try to use MIDI for something else, either something on the Web or a new Noteworthy file. I find that MIDI doesn't function. That's because the first application, even though minimized, has dibs on MIDI. It has to be closed before the new program can use MIDI.

Good thought. I will keep you posted. Jim

Most likely thing is your 'puter doesn't know what program to use to play them, or you don't have a "source" set for the midi sounds.

If you're using the default Windows player, look in Control Panel (Start-Settings-Control Panel) and double click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices," or whatever's the nearest equivalent in your version. There should be an "Audio" tab, that will bring up a box for "midi."

Just make sure there's something in the box. It may give you several choices, so just try them until one works, unless you know what midi stuff you've got.

If that doesn't work, midi may have gotten "associated" with some other program. Click on "Tools" in Windows Explorer, "Folder Options," and the "File Types" tab. If midi (.mid) files are being sent to a specific program that looks wrong, you can change it there; or, once you've identified a midi-play program, you may prefer to go to that program and make sure you have a "sounds" source turned on.

John,

I was having this problem also (along with non-functioning desktop icons)--and I think the answer could also be in the start menu--"Set Program Access and Defaults." If you don't know it's there and try the other stuff, it doesn't seem to work. This feature of Windows came in with Service Pack 3. There are a number of defaults it wants you to set.

Stilly -

The settings in Control Panel should work, if you can find the right thing to set to. The "Set Program Access and Defaults" I think is peculiar to Win ME, and possibly to a couple of the others if you're using "web view" or one of those other obnoxious setups that Mickey makes just because they think we're all idiots.

(end rant - and it was not directed at anyone except Mickey$oft.)

Since Jeep man didn't give us much to go on, the "generic" answer seemed appropriate, at least until he gives us a little more about what he's using.

Good idea though, if he's got the right setup.

I'm still trying. Near as I can figure, Real Player and Windows media player is where all audio is directed. I am not very computer literate but should be able to follow directions.
I have tried the methods you guys have given me and still no luck.

I am at your disposal, Jim

Jim - what version of Windows Media Player do you have? (Open the media player; click on "help" and then click on "About". Should show you the version you're working with.) Mine is 6.01.05 Something on my computor was hi-jacking midi-files-just fixed it last night. If you have the same version, I might be able to help. ('Nuther cyber-klutz here!)

I, (as some know), would advocate being able to play MIDIS amd 'most' other audio formats without depending on Microsoft products, which often have bloated interfaces and hidden agendas. I probably have 6-7 ways I 'could' play the same file.

I currently have it set up so that JetAudio is the default MIDI player, but easier to find and use...and MUCH more well known is WinAmp it will play an amazing amount of stuff, is free, and has as many add-ons as you can desire as you get more knowlege and need more......It is a good place to learn to download, install and use high-class freeware.

*if* you try it, you will need to do what is called 'associate' it with the file type...that is, tell both WinAmp and Windows that you want to use THIS when playing MIDIS...it may be possible to just tell WinAmp, and IT will take care of telling Windows....(purty durn clever program!)

Open WinAmp, hit 'ctrl P' for 'preferences' or click in the tiny box in the upper left corner and follow the 'options'->preferences menu...there are boxes to check to tell it what you want it to manage for you. Then you just mess with it as you learn to use all its bells & whistles...gets to be a lot of fun!

Bill D,

Those audio programs seem to be continually trying to one-up each other, and if you log onto a site with one program favored over another, up it pops and asks to be default for everything. I recently downloaded WinAmp, an am trying to keep it as default. I haven't had much time to test it yet.

John, I agree, Control Panel is where those adjustments SHOULD take place, and it was the logical place I tried (several times!) when trying to get my icons to work. I poked around in programs looking for settings that just didn't seem to exist. I found the thing in the start menu completely by accident.

I have a question: with my dual platform, the programs for running movies on my computer DVD are over in the ME side. I have to turn the computer off and restart in ME to play movies. Are there any good free programs that will run DVD movies on my Win2000 Pro side? None of these audio programs include a video component that I've found. I suppose I should go poke around at Tucows and see what they have.

(By the way--if anyone is looking for inexpensive stuff like DVD players, as it goes out of business KMart has some name brand players for about $80. You can find them that inexpensive at some stores but have never heard of the brand. Sylvania is the one that I find quite reliable, not particularly sexy, but solid. $80 for a reliable company, a new machine (not reconditioned like at Fry's, or some of what Sears has been discounting lately. Not bad.)

I reiterate what Bill said. I once had some kind of a program that "took over" and would set the default for volume=0. It took me forever to figure out how to change that!

BillD, Thanks for the search--I haven't done one for a while on this subject. That fellow's answer doesn't really make a lot of sense. It's just a player, it's not a copier, not trying to crack anyone's code. I suppose it means that Sony or someone still has the patent on the technology involved. I have at least one DVD player on the computer, but it's on a different platform from the one I usually use. (Actually, there are a couple of competing DVD softwares that HP installed. They have made that poor stupid ME program crash more than once). I can't see any point in buying another one, I can just reboot the computer. The other programs came bundled so I can't move a copy over to the other side; it wouldn't be in the registry, blah blah blah. . .what with all of the stuff that all of these free CD players will do, I was just crossing my fingers that they might be ready to play DVDs now also. But I'll just keep turning it off and running DVD's on the ME side. The price is right!
