Don't know how that happened. Sorry.

I think Scott Wiseman was half of Lulubelle and Scotty. They were real big in the 30's, maybe 40's. Used to yodel in harmony.
They sang, as near as I recall--

The sweetest words are spoke by lovers in the gloaming
The sweetest days are days that used to be
The saddest words I ever heard were spoke at parting
When you said "Sweetheart, remember me."

chorus

Remember me
When the candle lights are gleaming
Remember me
At the close of a long long day
It'd be so sweet
While all alone I'm dreaming
Just to know sweetheart you still remember me...

but that's all I remember. I cd. probably work out chords to it if nobody has any more.

here you go. I didn't have it quite right...

SCOTT WISEMAN:
This song was written in 1939 when LuLu Belle and I spent a year at radio station WLW, Cincinnati. In our guest room at home when I was a child there was a fancy old cup and saucer which sat on the dresser. The phrase "Remember Me" was on the cup in fancy gold lettering. We children were not allowed to touch this momento [sic] of the sentimental Gay Nineties, somehow connected with the courtship of Mother and Dad. Feeling a bit homesick and sentimental during the bustle of radio shows and road trips, I "made up" the song while riding in the car to personal appearance jobs. The lyric was not intended to apply to any particular person.

Letters to Dorothy Horstman, Apr 8/Aug 8, 1973; reprinted in Dorothy Horstman, Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy, New York, 1976, p. 191.

Remember Me
(Scott Wiseman)

CHORUS:
Remember me when the candle lights are gleaming,
Remember me at the close of a long, long day.
It would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreaming
Just to know you still remember me.

The sweetest songs belong to lovers in the gloaming,
The sweetest days are days that used to be.
The saddest words I ever heard were words of parting
When you said "Sweetheart, remember me."

You told me once that you were mine alone forever
And I was yours till the end of eternity.
But all those vows are broken now, and we will never
Be the same except in memory.

A brighter face may take my place when we're apart, dear,
A sweeter smile, a love more bold and free.
But in the end, fair weather friends may break your heart, dear.
If they do, sweetheart, remember me.

VERSION #2 (as performed by Bob Dylan)

The sweetest songs are sung by lovers in the moonlight,
The sweetest days are the days that used to be.
The saddest words I ever heard were words of parting
When you said "Sweetheart, remember me."

CHORUS:
Remember me when the candle lights are gleamin',
Remember me at the close of a long, long day.
Just be so sweet when all alone you're dreamin'
Just to know you still remember me.

A brighter face may take my place when we're apart, dear,
A brighter smile an' a love more bold and free.
But in the end, fair weather friends may break your heart, dear.
An' if they do, sweetheart, remember me.

You told me once you were mine alone forever,
You were mine till the end of eternity.
But now it's over, dear, and we can never
Be the same except in memory.

This is an absolutely fabulous old song. I'm going to be playing and singing it all day. Thanks for jogging my memory. Didn't Hank Snow record this one?

The chords to the tune I know go like this:

GThe sweetest songs belong to C lovers in the G gloaming,
The sweetest D7 days are days that used to Gbe.
The saddest words I ever C heard were words of G parting
When you said "Sweet-D7heart, remember Gme."

CHORUS:
GRemember Cme when the candle lights are Ggleaming,
Remember D7me at the close of a long, long Gday.
It would be so Csweet when all alone I'm Gdreaming
Just to know you D7still remember Gme.

The chord goes with the syllable following. I used to think it was pretty cool to play (on the chorus)

"G Re- GM7 mem- G7 ber C me," walking down the high E-string from g to e, and/or the same thing on "G It'd GM7 be G7 so C sweet." Well, maybe I still think so.

Found this discussion today, January 3, 2021! I don’t know if any of you discussing this song are still around but I wanted to add this. I first learned this song back in the
mid-1980’s, and played it with the friend I learned it from. In the version he had, there were 3 verses and 2 choruses. I’ve been singing this song with another friend for several years. We do V1, C1, V2, C2, V3, C1/2 in harmony. It took some work to get where you don’t slip off, but it does sound good when you’re on!

The words to Chorus 2 are as follows, chords are the same as chorus 1:

Remember Me when I’m gone for I’ll be yearning
For you, each night far away on the deep blue sea
Don’t cry for me but keep our love light burning
When I’m gone, sweetheart Remember Me.

I don’t know where the extra chorus came from, other than that I got it from my friend who I used to sing with. Sadly he passed away a few years ago, and I never learned where the 2nd chorus came from. Maybe someone here knows. In any case, a great tune!

Bill

Here's a youtube video of the song being sung by the composer. The words posted by Clint Keller above are almost perfect, except that the original said "fairer face" rather than "brighter face."

I've heard this song at sessions, and I'm pretty sure the original has more chromatic notes. This is a nice song; thanks for posting.
