Sounds like it could be The Auctioneer, which was popular a few years back. Can be found at Cowpie. Go to Auctioneer and type auctioneer in the search.

Give us a line or two to work with.

I don't think Dolly did The Auctioneer, but if that's the one you want, I'll type in the lyrics unless you find them above at Cowpie.

Dolly On Line ~~ Albums Here is what looks like a complete list of her albums. I checked the contents of each through Together Always, 1972. You might want to start at the other end, checking each in turn for what you are looking for.

Could you share the lyrics you found?
are you sure it was not Laurie Lewis??
from a posem by M.B. Welch, which was
sent to Laurie by Howard Olivier
she recorded it wht Kathy Kallick on their
c.d. Together

THE TOUCH OF THE MASTER'S HAND
-------------------------------
It was battered and scarred,
and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while,
To waste much time on the old violin,
But he held it up with a smile
"What am i bid good people," he said
"Who'll start the bidding for me,
a dollar, a dollar, who'll make it two,
two dollars, who'll make it three
ands it's 3 dollars once and 3 dollars twice
and goin' for three dollars more"
from the back of the room a grey haired man
came forward and picked up the bow
and dusted off that old fiddle and
tightening up on the strings,
he played a melody sure and sweet,
as sweet as the angels sing.

The music stopped, and the auctioineer,
in a voice that was soft and low,
He said "What am i bid for this violin,"
and he held it up with the bow,
"A thousand dollars, who'll make it two,
Two thousenad, who'll make it three,
And it's 3,000 once and it's 3,000 twice
and goin' and gone," said he.

The people cheered, but some of them said,
we don't quite understand,
What changed its worth and,
the man replied
"It was the touch of the master's hand."

There's many a man with his life out of tune
and battered and scarred with sin
His auction cheap to the godless friends(?)
much like that old violin
A mass of pottage, a glass of wine,
a game and he travels on.
and he's goin once, and he's goin' twice
he's goin' and almost gone
and the the master comes
and the foolish crowd
can never quite understand
the worth of a soul and the change that is wrought
by the touch of the master's hand..
The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought
by the touch of the master's hand..

The late and very much lamented Dave Houlden wrote A WONDERFUL parody
of that using a melodeon as the instrument and working it the other
way round, entitled 'The Touch of the Cock Up Mans Hand'.If there is any interest I could post it after I dig out the In Memoriam Dave Houlden song book.

See also TOUCH OF THE MASTER'S HAND in the DigiTrad. This was a popular recitation by a well-known Country artist in the fifties. I thought maybe Luke the Drifter, but I can't find any documentation. Can anyone help?

I believe you are referring to Walter Brennan. That's who I heard doing this as well as Old Rivers.

BIDDING AMERICA GOODBYE (THE AUCTION)

Dear Mr. Johnson we're sorry to inform you
Your request for a second loan has been refused
And the board of directors up in the city
Has instructed us to take the farm from you

We understand your problems and wish that we could help you
But the falling price of wheat's not our concern
And the cost of operation may well be rising
But the fact is that you lose more than you earn

This Saturday morning there will be an auction
Underneath a cold gray country sky
And while the rest of the nation is still sleeping
They'll be bidding America Good-Bye

And so Mr. Johnson let us say in conclusion
That we know your family's worth that last four years
If we can be of assistance during your transition
Please don't hesitate to call us here.

This Saturday morning there will be an auction
Underneath a cold grey country sky
And while the rest of the nation is still sleeping
They'll be bidding America Good-Bye

Would like to have chord progression for this song. Seems it should be minor chords in places. Feel free to add lyrics if anyone knows the procedure

wow-seems it all should be minor chords--such a
sad reminder of the fate of so many farmers...
and seems do not seem to be looking up.
thanks for sharing this...and the source is?

lyrics copyed from an audio casset tape without a lable purchased at a yard sale.
sounds like Dolly Parton. Lady I received tape from said the song
was entitled "The Auction" played in Bb and was By Dolly Parton.. Tape has several other selections: "The Chance You Took With Me" "Yellow Roses" Band Has a Sound similar to A band that I heard at Dolly Wood consisting of Dolly"s relaltions some years back.
This is about the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Thanks again for all your efforts.

The song posted by Mr. Silver above is actually called BIDDING AMERICA GOODBYE, sometimes given as BIDDING AMERICA GOODBYE (THE AUCTION). It was written by Jamie O'Hara and recorded by Tanya Tucker (not Dolly Parton). Tucker's recording appears on her 1991 album "What Do I Do with Me?" and a couple of compilations. Stacy Dean Campbell also sang it on his 1999 album "Ashes of Old Love."

You can find a couple of sound samples at Yahoo! Music.

According to a couple of other web sites, verse 4 line 2 should be:
"That we know your family's worked that land for years".
