Punch The Horse - March Thread

Ok Folks. Here's the deal. We have been requested elsewhere to keep PTH threads to one per month. John from Hull et al, I shall start one each month, please refrain from getting us bollocked again by proliferation!

Within the banner of PTH threads, info about sessions in the East Yorks and North Lincs region can be advertised and discussed, including Sun Inn, Sloop, Goxhill, Kingston, etc. Everbody agreeable? If it gets too long each month, I'm sure they won't mind us doing a continuation thread.

I have to say, in defence of Hull catters, I have just spent this morning reading threads elsewhere on this forum, and must say to the mudcat management that the same can be said of other topics here. How many PEL threads??? IRAQ/Bush/Blair threads...??? Religion??? There seem to be a lot of people out there having a competition to see how many big words (articulate verbage) they can sling into a paragraph, preaching deep and meaningful opinions in order to impress upon each other the depth of their intellect. If this is what the good ol U.S. of A is like, I think I'll stay here. No offence, chaps.

At least we're just having a bit of of good natured banter between friends, and informing each other of coming musical events in our region. Long may that continue. I won't read your moralistic, contradictory ramblings about war, politics, and religion. You don't need to read our mindless drivel. And we all live happily ever after.

Pete.

Oops. Felt the need. (wonder if I'll get told off.....?)

Ok, back to business. As I understand it, there appears to be a fair bit of stuff occurring this weekend. Myself, Oakley and Skippy at Botty whiffs Ceilidh on friday at Elsham Hall. Closed shop. Saturday Night, Maggie and Les holding birfdy bash/session at the Kingston Pub, all invited.

Punch the Horse playing Durty Nellies Saturday night also, so perhaps there may be some cross fertilisation (steady, David).

Sunday afternoon, there will be a session at the Old Black Boy on the High Street, (2-5?). PTH will be at Durty Nellies for a while sound checking with Jim Stark and Dave Elf ready for monday, and may well pop over to Black boy for a jar and fine company if we are welcome.

On Monday 17th, it being the good Saint's day, from 3pm onwards, Punch the Horse, Jim Stark, and Dave Elf will be in residence at Durty Nellies, High Street, Kingston upon Hull, rotating hourly until probably midnight. Much Guinness will be drunk, and it's likely that the event will be much fun. You are all extremely welcome to come for a pint or three, and I hope to see some of you there!!

I think that sums up the weekends festivities so far? There just remains the question of who's gonna shave their head for comic relief on Saturday....? What about it, Les?

My head will remain unshaved. I can't even afford a haircut. I know that some of you less hirsute are just jealous of my flowing locks.

Yes we're all looking forward to a weekend-and-a-bit of Guinness-fuelled mayhem. It was very forward-looking of Maggie to arrange to be born round about this time of the year.

I'm sure that I'll pop over from stately Ward Mansion on Monday to see the lads, in the hope that I can find Pete Scissorhands with a whisky near him. I doubt I'll be staying all night though. I'm not as young (or daft) as I used to be. Besides, I've no wish to set up as an unpaid guitar tech again!

We're hoping for a good attendance for the Fragrant One's birthday bash. If anybody needs any further information, please get in touch.

Roger - I don't think there are any blended Irish malts. But if you know any different, I'd be delighted to give you my opinion in a taste test.

I admit to being totally ignorant on the subject of single malts or whisky of any kind. Beer, now, I could talk about for hours (and drink for even longer) but I avoid anything that has an alcohol content higher than the volume in the glass (eg beer about4% and just under 700ml in a pint glass, whisky about 37% and around 35ml in a glass.)

Bushmills Red label and Black Bush are both blends, the stuffeen with the green label is the single malt. Also Jamesons is a blend but Mr dean I will be only to happy to remove any Whiskey from your grasp on Monday, malt or blend, you stick to the black stuff and please refrain from using my surname on a public forum thank you!

DeanMeister,

I am not from Hull but when you refer to "elsewhere", might I direct to to the fact that it is required to use the term "another place" to describe the upper Mudcat chamber. Spring in Twillingsgate is wonderful. At least I think it is so, as I haven't set foot outside Penelope - my prone aerobic teacher's gaff for three weeks. Where did it all go so wrong?

Not that I know a great deal about Whiskey (please note the E in Whiskey, the Irish spelling) but there are 5 Irish Malts. Pure Pot Still Connemara, Midleton, Lockes, Bushmills (Green Label) and Tyrconnell.
I'm willing to help anyone who has a surfeit of the above consume their excess

Hi Annie. I thought I'd take a few weeks off as I hardly have the time to dwell in my house at the moment, let alone spend endless hours reading all the fascinating threads and spending God alone knows how many hours in the Mudchat. It was convenient to pretend to take humberage at the ire expressed about the Hull drivel and duck out for a bit. It is a very difficult thing to leave anyway and I'll pop in from time to time.

Please someone start a new thread entitled "PEL in Post-Sadaam Iraq9". This would help I'm sure, to unite the good people of the USA and those in Hull.

Banjo-Flower sends me postcards from the far east - and I'm not talking Withernsea or Lowestoft here. In return, I have burgled his house and am now wearing his jewels, his hat and his fun fur jacket.

I would like to thank Smallpiper publicly for his invaluable expertise on the sound desk on Monday. The gig would not have been the same without him. Also to Nik Nak for swelling PTH's number to five for the night. Duelling fiddles made it an unforgettable night for me. Thanks, darling xx We owe you both. Also a word about Jim Stark and David Elf. Both extremely talented singers and musicians, and bloody nice blokes to boot. If you haven't seen either of them, make an effort to do so in the future. I most certainly will.

And thanks to everyone who came and supported us all. It was a cracking night, I hope you'll agree. Never seen Durty Nellies quite that full before! Hope to see many of you at the Sun Inn, Beverley, this coming sunday night for more equine pugilism? I have a sneaky suspicion that Nik Nak may once again be demonstrating her prowess and flexing her musical muscles so it promises to be another good night!

Just to make a link here to Eric's Barton thread. It seems that the Council officers in Lincs have taken it upon themselves to close down the Barton session and Eric is trying to drum up support for a "mass trespass" at the next one.

I'll certainly do my best to support that and hope that everyone here will do the same.

Keep music live, eh?

A big thanks once again to the lovely Nik Nak for her support on Sunday night, after an arduous drive back from Scotland. Nikki will be playing next Saturday evening in it's entirety at the Hope and Anchor, South Ferriby.

Support would be greatly appreciated. For those who don't know, Nikki and Oakley will be sharing the burden of appearing with the equine pugilists from now on.

See you all at the Sloop on Tuesday night! (hope I'm on the list....)

May I draw everybody's attention to the Session that Bill Sables has organised at the Crown and Anchor at Newport next Monday, 31st March, 8.30 pm. It has been organised with the intention of uniting the musicians from the Goole/Selby area with the Hull/Lincs people, and promises to be a wonderful night. If it's anything like the fantastic evening at the Sloop last night, it'll be ace. Hope to see you all there!

Unfortunately I can't go on Monday due to work commitments. However, I hope to see everyone at my "last Sunday of month session" in the Sun, Beverley this Sunday afternoon. There is a reportedly very good acoustic blues band palying in the evning too.

The Barton sess was good - I couldn't stay for long but felt compelled to show my face in support of the cause.

Great to see so many people turning up in support of the cause -some like Raggy and wombat and others coming from a good distance.

What a wonderfull evening!!!!! - even if I was teased by the deanmeister for visiting a folk club! That is how a session should be run - no one dominating, just the right mix of tunes, songs, joiny in choruses - will certainly be attending again.

Well, if the session at Newport is as good as the Sloop you are all in for a treat. Unfortunately I wont be able to attend - wrong shift.

Will see you at the Sun on Sun Rog.

Bye the Bye, Punch the Horse is appearing at the Hope and Anchor South Ferriby on Saturday night, starring the lovely and talented Nik Nak.
