Lo and behold, the "Jewel in the Crown" CD was on the shelf in my room - and my records show I bought the CD in 1996. -Joe Offer- THE NAKED HIGHWAYMAN (Steve Tilston) As I rode out one summer's day for profit and for pleasure, I planned to rob the London coach and take it at my leisure. A brace of pistols duly primed, a sabre fit to shave on, I waited underneath the trees that lined the banks of Avon. I didn't hear her dainty step as she appeared before me: A face to charm a singing bird with words that did implore me. "Can you help me sir?" she said, "I fear the time is near run For me to cross before the tide swells the banks of Avon." All you roving fellows listen, while you can, Of the time that I became a naked highwayman. (repeat) So gallantly I did dismount and walked into the water, As she told me that she was a wealthy merchant's daughter. So I thought I'd try my luck and do my best to charm her. Said I was the only son of a country farmer. "Your hands they are as smooth as silk, They never touched a plough sir And I suppose these pistols help you milking of your cows." She looked at me with mocking eyes as coal-black as a raven And then she fell into my arms beside the banks of Avon. It's a b*gger to sing up to speed. I've tried it slower, with the emphasis on beats 1 and 4 in the bar - gives it an unusual rhythm and lets the singer and the listener catch all the lyrics. BTW, what's happening? Twice now in this thread, I've got halfway through a posting and the system has submitted a blank post, then taken me back to my incomplete post (you'll see an empty jonm poting before each of mine with text in). This hasn't happened before. |

True, sometimes you have only a passing or casual interest in a song, or don't want a whole book's worth of material, or it may even be way beyond your ability once you see the chords (especially pieces composed on instruments other than the guitar), but just pointing out, this is all part of how these guys make a living... As a songwriter, I also enjoy picking up songbooks now and again for things like changes I hadn't thought of, things like that. jim |
