It's usually played in D...start with D then Em then Bm and back to D...this is an unusual progression in Irish music.

As the piece is in the key of D, Smallpiper, it is almost certainly a B minor here as Guest Maurice says. In German lead sheets, the letter B usually stands for B-flat.
By the way. Does the tune have any connection with the Battle of Salamanca (July 1st 1812) at which an army led by the Irishman Wellesly won one of the major battles of the Peninsula Campaign during the Napoleonic Wars?

Breandán Breathnach certainly thought so, but others would have it that it's named for the Irish College (seminary) at Salamanca.

German notation B is standard Bb, H is standard B. The sheet music linked above uses lower case for minor chords. (Sorcha - the numbers above are not chords but triplet signs).

Underneath the spanish moon
Where the battle raged in fury
Many a young man met his doom
A soldier of fortune bound for glory

In the year of Thirty five
full of youth and adventure
Just another restless boy in history to leave my indenture

On the plains of Salamanca
I thought I heard a young man scream
God bless my home in Tipperary
That I never more will see

The tune might well be named after a famous battle or a seminary, but I would guess it might well be named after a pub called the Salamaanca.

Guest, can you give us more information about the lyrics you posted? This seems to be from the point of view of an Irish soldier fighting in the Spanish Civil War.
How many songs are we talking about in this thread? I think it's good we keep them all here - but if we can sort them out, we may have some real treasures. Tunefinder lists several tunes with "Salamanca" in the title. "The Heroes of Salamanca" and "The Salamanca" and "Salamanca Reel" all seem to be the same tune. For that matter, "Salamanca Hornpipe" seems to be the same tune at a different tempo.
I'm either lost, or dreadfully confused - one of the two.

Only one tune, Joe, until the verses posted by GUEST which I know nothing of.

Great tune.
