18 Mar 03 - 09:47 AM (#912514) Subject: When Politics and Music Clash From: curmudgeon Last night I performed my 27th consecutive St. Patrick's Day program at the Press Room. This is usually the busiest day of the year with the club selling the most Guinness in the state of New Hampshire. But when we arrived to set up, there was no great crowd; no need to push our way through with instruments and sound equipment. The place was not empty, but certainly less full than ever before on this day. We started at 6:30 to a half full room. A few more people showed up. Then at 7:45, about a third of the room left, presumably to watch George Bush rattle his sabre. The room never filled up. We put on a great show; the audience loved it and demanded encores. But we made less money last night than we had on any previous St. Patrick's Day in 27 years. Who else had his/her gig/income diminished by the machinations of war and politics? -- Tom |

I do't know if it was caused by politics, but there was nothing musical or otherwise going on here last night, or even over the weekend. The big "do" was on the 7th and we missed it. Took awhile to get going... there was no real crowd until mid afternoon, but when it caught it burned like the Hindenburg! As I was coming out of my dinner-time gig last night, people were gathering at this intersection to watch the speech. So I set up on the opposite corner, put a poster in my fiddle case about the protests planned if the war starts, and started playing. The big event last night was at a local Pub, seating about 400. It was full. There were TVs everywhere (as is the custom with USA pubs) but this time it was a good idea - because Bush went on as I started. The TVs had the sound off, but the closed captioned text scrolling. The audience lent me a polite ear, but watched intently as the president spoke. In between songs, I asked for updates. It was the oddest St Pat's Day start I've ever had. But, things wound down as the president finished his speech and the party rolled. Great crowd, great pub - great time! |
