COCAINE BLUES
As recorded by George Thorogood and the Destroyers on "Move It On Over" (1978)

Early one mornin' while makin' the rounds,
I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my baby down.
I shot her down and I went to bed.
I stuck that lovin' 44 beneath my head.

Woke up the next mornin' and I grabbed that gun.
I took a shot of cocaine and away I run.
Made a good run, but I run too slow.
They overtook me down in Juarez, Mexico.

Takin' the high joint, takin' the pill,
In walked a sheriff from Jericho Hill.
"Willie Lee, your name is not Jack Brown.
You're the dirty hack that shot your woman down."

"Yes, oh, yes, my name is Willie Lee.
If you've got a warrant, you better read it to me.
I shot her down ‘cause she made me slow.
I thought I was her daddy, but she had five more."

When I was arrested, I was dressed in black.
They threw me on freight train and hauled me back.
I had no friends for to go my bail.
They stuck my dried-up carcass in that county jail.

Early next mornin' 'round half-past nine,
I saw a sheriff comin' down the line.
That sheriff yelled as he cleared his throat:
"Say, come on, you dirty hack, into that district court."

Into the courtroom my trial began,
Where I was judged by twelve honest men.
Just as the jury started walkin' out,
I saw that little judge commence to look about.

In about five minutes, in walked a man
Holdin' the verdict in his right hand.
The verdict read: "In the first degree."
Well, I shouted, "Lordy, lordy, please have mercy on me."

The judge he smiled when he picked up his pen.
"Ninety-nine years in the San Quentin pen."
Ninety-nine years underneath that ground,
And I can’t forget the day I shot that bad bitch down.

Come all you hot heads and listen unto me.
Stay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be.

That Mexican city is Juarez (in full, Ciudad Juarez).

There are several different songs with the title COCAINE BLUES.

T. J. "Red" Arnall wrote the one posted above. Johnny Cash recorded it at Folsom Prison, and his recording appears on many compilations. Joaquin Phoenix sang it on the soundtrack of the film "Walk the Line." Others who recorded it are George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Hank Thompson, Hank Williams III, Roy Hogsed, and a few others.

That Thorogood version above looks like a take off from Woody Guthrie's Bad Lee Brown, recorded earlier by Tom 'Clarence' Ashley if I recall correctly:

It was late last night when I made my round
I met my woman and I blowed her down
I went back home and got into bed
Put that 44 pistol up under my head

Early next morning by the rising sun
I got up and I made my run
I made a run but I run too slow
A man overtook me down in Jericho etc etc etc

Usually this version is known as Little Sadie. There are several threads in the DT.

The must be hundreds of verses, and feel free to make up some more. I always liked this from Dave Van Ronk

Went to bed last night, singin' a song
Woke up this mornin' and my nose was gone
(Oh well, guess you can't have everything)

or

There is no problem so great
That you can't run away from it (oh yeah)

Congratulations for Thorogood popularizing some good old blues tunes. I knew the "Cocaine Blues" first from about 20 years ago introduced to me by a George Thorogood Album. I used to sing it but could not remember the lyrics so I looked on line so I could sing it again (I just moved to Austin and only know a little semi-country songs and thought this would be a good one since I sing Low Bass voice mainly). Thanks for the refresher. I wanted to respond to the thread I got from my search on "Early one morning while making the rounds..." I got back a hit that said something like "I don't know if George Thorogood wrote this". I recently realized Johnny Cash did this song too (as I said - not in to country) I just wanted to clarify that years ago, if memory serves, in an interview, when Thorogood was coming up, he was asked about his songs being based on old blues stand-by's. He said ALL of his songs ARE old blues songs and that he DID NOT WRITE ANY of them, explaining that there was so much good old music out there that he did not need to write anything. When asked if he was going to write and perform some originals he replied, that yes, he had written songs but would not play them out untill he could come up with a better song than the Rolling Stone's "Under My Thumb". Trippy, huh?

Cisco Houston did this as either 'Bad Man Ballad' or 'Bad Lee Brown', can't exactly remember which he called it. He was Lee Brown, whatever the title, as in :-

He said to me 'I b'lieve your name's Lee Brown,
Why you're the dirty hack that shot your woman down!
