20 Mar 03 - 12:32 PM (#914618) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: open mike I ws not able to down load that song sample, but I believe that HARP, though described only as various artists, concsists of Holly Near, Arlo Guthrie, Ronnie Gilbert, and Pete Seeger. Ronnie was one of the members of the Weavers. I first heard the song from Margaret Christl. |

21 Mar 03 - 04:57 AM (#915180) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: MairSea I have been singing this song for the last two years and am glad that it is being revived. I'm afraid I got the tune from a CD and so do not have dots or chords as I sing it unaccompanied. It has always produced a good reaction and I was sad that I didn't sing it on Monday night - I felt I'd sung it there too many times. I love it because I am a mother/daughter/wife exactly as in the song and nearly reaching the last verse as well. Good Luck with it. Race you to the festival singarounds :-) |
21 Mar 03 - 06:01 AM (#915211) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: Bob Bolton G'day Judel, Is MMario's ABC notation sufficient for you? I seem to remember having put the full words and dots in my music program for my Monday Night Music Session. I just searched ... and didn't find it, but I'm building a new system after a possible "head crash" ... and have not yet nretrieved everything. If you want an image (PDF ... or a 1-bit GIFF) of the "sheet music", I should be able to send it to an address nominated in a PM to me. Regards, Bob Bolton (just finished listening to/reviewing a new 2-CD set THE NATIONAL - 35 years of the Australlian National Folk Festival, which has Judy Small singing Lest We ..., in 1988 ... a National in which I was involved at the planning stages.) |
21 Mar 03 - 11:20 AM (#915377) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: JudeL Thank you all for you efforts. Bob & Mario, I'm afraid since I sing unaccompanied and don't read the dots (well not with any ease) the sample Wolfgang identified was what I, as an individual needed, but I am certain that others who do read music will find the notes very useful. |

12 Feb 09 - 09:08 PM (#2565518) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: Uncle Phil The (G) first time it was (G) fathers, the (G) last time it was (D) sons, And (G) in between your (G) husbands marched a(C)way with drums and (D) guns, And you (G) never thought to (G)question, you just (C) went on with your (G) lives, 'Cause (Am) all they ever taught (Am) you who to be was (C) mothers, daughters, (D) wives. Note that the last line doesn't resolve back to G, it just hangs there on D. I like it when that D is just left hanging in the air at the end of the song, but most folks, including Judy Small, add a tag line that gets you back to G. (D)and you believed (G) them. - Phil |

12 Feb 09 - 10:34 PM (#2565590) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: Uncle Phil It is a great song, but I hadn't thought about for a long time. I first learned it 25 or more years ago from a cassette tape of "The Anzacs", one of Ted Eagan's "Faces of Australia" series. The song right before it on the tape was Eric Bogle singing "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". Good stuff; I wonder what ever happened to the tape. - Phil |
12 Feb 09 - 10:48 PM (#2565600) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: Beer Phil, I'm trying to remember how I learned the tune. Not sure. Probably from a cassette. Did the Corrie's do this tune? Adrien |
13 Feb 09 - 12:33 AM (#2565629) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mothers Daughters Wives From: Uncle Phil Google says they did, but I don't remember it. I was happy to see that lot of people have recorded it over the years, more than I would have guessed. A song like that deserves to be heard. - Phil |
