Very nice strings which sound good right away (I always prefer a more "played-in" sound). But in the last little while, I've been using Martin SPs. They sound good right away too and last a long time for me, but for some reason I don't break them as often as the others. Or maybe I'm developing a lighter touch with the pick. From: Mark Cohen I'm not what you call an expert guitarist, but I've become a fan of the D'Addario EXP coated strings. They were wonderful when I lived in Hilo, the rainiest town in the U.S., where standard strings lasted about 2 weeks. Depends on the guitar, what kind of sound one wants, how one plays, the playing style, etc, etc, etc, as to what are the best strings. I have been using Martin Marquis Light gauge for over 20 years on my 1964 Gibson J-45. I like the sound. But then, I'm a finger---oops, I mean fangerpicker! I only rarely use a flatpick when it's needed to hear the struming in a setting with no sound equip, or when I must strum because of the style of the music. I tried the elixers, the durn things broke--the 6th!! & the 4th!! I've never in all my life had a 6th or 4th string break----until then. |

They last longer and as I have truly atrocious right hand technique, it is good to have strings which are nearly unbreakable! I only really like the sound of very new Martins - I mean the first three days. They have an advantage for a busker though, because if you break them at the bridge, you can rewind them and use them again. They are cheap too... |

They have turned an unpleasant shade of green around the second and third frets, but do not suffer from buzz or any loss of tone. I usually carry a set of cheap strings (various Ernie Balls, and whatever I can, ahem, acquire, at sessions), as emergency spares; I suspect that once Elixirs have worn out, they will have been worked absolutely to death, and there will be no point in keeping old Elixirs as spares. |

They are more expensive but last a very long time saving money in the long term.Boy they last along time They feel great and do not tarnish or rust. Used in conjunction with a speed pick they make a terrific combo. Why use a dunlop thumb pick when Speed pick make the guitar sound like it can. It's a rare contra dance where I don't break at least one, usually a 3rd and/or 4th string. After about 50 years of pounding, John Pearce are the only brand that NEVER had a dead string right out of the package, based on about 250 sets I've used. They must have some quality controls that the others are missing. That being said, I can't afford 'em. I save 'em for recording dates but for other playing it's bulk packaged Martin Phosphor Bronze lights. I get 'em 4 dozen sets at a time, unwrapped, for about $1.25 (US Dollars) per set. Over all, a little bit of tonal weakness is a cheap price to pay. On the classical guitar it's a different story. The variation between poor, sorta ok, good and great strings is much greater than the range of steel strings. Bad nylon strings sound like rubber bands even on a fine instrument and the better your guitar, the more difference the strings make. My Ramirez A-1 is like an Italian countess. She'll kick me out of bed if I don't treat her right. Treat her to the finest nylon and, WOW! I use Saverez Corum Alliance 500 AJ's (at about $25 per set!) |

Unfortunately I seem to be the only person in Cambridge who uses them, bcos both guitar shops have stopped stocking them. :-( D'Addarios have always struck me as, well, *average*. Nothing really bad, but they're completely lacking in any kind of "snap" which I'd expect from new strings. Martins never did anything for me either. The only really *bad* strings I've ever bought were a set of D'Aquistos. That's the only time I've ever taken off the new strings and restrung with the old ones! Graham. |

It has now settled down and I try to fingerpick a few old favorites like Rubber Dolly etc... I used play an Aria Acoustic, it rocked! - preferred any old bronze wound. So it depends on what you are playing. I know very little about the big names except the box I now play. Since I am a like case of G-A-S I tend to avoid shops containing good brands. |

The Elixir folks really do stand behind their guarantee that they'll last 3 times as long (without breaking or going bad) as other strings or they'll give you your money back. I had a couple of Elixir strings break fairly quickly a year or two ago. I'll never completely know why (though in retrospect I suspect it may have been a problem with my Sigma's plastic saddle), but when I called Elixir about it, they gladly replaced both strings and sent me two brand new sets to boot. The Elixirs do last longer, and I like the way they feel. But I also buy some high E strings and some B's in bulk, since they break most often. I also keep a few $2 and $3 sets of strings (Dean Markley, Martin, D'Addario, etc.) around as spares. I don't usually buy the Elixirs unless they're on sale. |

From: CraigS I have a guitar that likes La Bella Criterions better than anything else, but it usually gets a set of Martins because that's what I can get locally. If you've got a guitar with a tender front or a high action, I'd recommend La Bella Silk and Steel. If you want a set to last for years, I have found Gibson Mona metal strings very durable (but a bit dead to start with). Rotosound are my favourites for electrics. |

From: ddw D'Addario phosphor bronze mediums (.013 high E) on my Guild, Palmer and Cort -- the Palmer being tuned pretty consistantly to open D and the others in standard or drop D. I was a bit surprised to find my National Steel came from the factory with the same strings. Not sure they're D'Addarios, but they're definitely P/B .013s and they sound great, so I'll stick with them. I keep it tuned to open G or open D almost all the time. cheers david |

They're hand-made in Heanor, Derbyshire, UK and are reputed to be the Dog's Wotnots. They make special sets for non-standard tunings also, which give the same tension as you would normally get with standard tuning. |

I have played other strings that I've liked more than elixirs BUT no string I've played sounds as good as Elixir's after a month of me playing. He seems to think they last a little better than most other non-coated strings though - maybe his sweat's not so acid? Cliff - I've always used Elixir 12s or the D'Addario EXP 12s on my Lowden O25 - they're both dear, the D'Add's sound better when new but don't last anywhere near as long as the Elixirs. I can get 4 to 6 weeks from a set of Elixirs compared with 2 weeks from the D'Add's. My only complaint with the Elixirs is that they seem to have a low tension and the low 'E' goes out badly when I capo up, but a little re-tune is a small price to pay for that long life! I've also tried Dean Marley Alchemy's on both my Lowden and my Martin J40 but they sound very tinny and 'twangy', too much for my liking. Johnny :0) |

I' use em' on a L'Arrivee which sounds pretty decent with about any kind of strings...the engineer at the last recording studio said it was the best sounding acoustic he'd ever heard. (but then he mostly records rock and jazz, not acoustic folk trash like I play.) |

I buy them by the furlong from Elderly Instruments. Much less expensive than buying them locally. EJ45 (normal tension) or EJ46 (hard tension) for my Oribé concert classic. Either sound good, but I think the EJ46 have a little more carrying power and sustain. EJ44 (extra hard tension) for both my Arcangel Fernandez flamenco and my GO-GW nylon-string travel guitar. The Arcangel has a very low action like a good flamenco guitar should (butter-soft), but with anything less than EJ44s, I get a bit of buzz. The buzz is okay if I'm only going to be playing flamenco (part of the characteristic flamenco sound), but since I like to use it for song accompaniment as well, I use the higher tension strings to mitigate the buzz. The GO-GW travel guitar is short-scale (23 ½"), so it needs the higher tension strings. EJ16 (light tension) on my steel string GO-GW travel guitar. Before that, D'Addario...but the Guilds, once I tried them out, blew D'Addarios away. Back in 1978, I happened upon a box of 2500 plain wound ZB Strings of different gauges...008, .009. .010, .011, .013, .014, .015, .017. they are used mostly for pedal steel guitars....I still have some..they, also are great strings. We buy 12 sets at a time from a music store where we used to live. We get a deal on the amount and the strings are fine. Phosphor bronze strings provide a "bite" on the frets that I liked and the elixirs don't. Hard to explain. What works for one, doesn't work for another. |
