Lyr Req: Barbecue in Heaven

24 Jul 98 - 10:51 AM (#33278)
Subject: Barbecue In Heaven
From:

I'm looking for a very old song. Verse is:
There'll be a barbecue in Heaven when I get there,
I'm gettin' hungry just waitin' to go.
There'll be a barbecue in Heaven when I get there,
Lord I hope I get to go....

I think it's Bluegrass. Gotta be from the 60s or before. Anyone?

Sound clip at click here and scroll down the page a bit. It's definitely bluegrass, apparently done by the Buffalo Sabres (?). Written by J. Valby.

There's a "Contact Us" button on their site. Perhaps they'd be willing to share the lyrics?

No barbecue in Heaven. You've got to go "Downstairs" if you want it hot...
Quack!

The song is indeed "Barbecue in Heaven" and was done by Jim Schoenfeld on his "Schony" album. It was a modest regional hit back in the 70s when he was with the Sabres. The song got a bit of airplay on then-WKBW, now WWKB, 1520 AM.

The rest of the album is a bunch of rather awful covers. Your average garage band would be embarrassed. ;-)

I found an mp3 file at the web site of The Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association. The sound quality is poor; hence a few gaps and uncertainties. The performer is Jim Schoenfeld.

BARBECUE IN HEAVEN
John Valby

CHORUS: There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there.
I'm getting hungry just waiting to go.
There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there.
I hope I get to go.

Life's long; work's hard; kids to raise and feed;
And every day I gladly pray for the Judgment Day.
There'll be a crowd in the sky, the angels say.
"Howdy, son! Come on in. Stick it on your grave(?)."

When I was a little boy, my daddy said, "Now, son,
Bury me with a ... when you put me in the ground.
When I pass through the Pearly Gates and smell that pit-fire burning,
Jesus cookin' barbecue ... down."

Mostly correct with the lyrics, Jim, though I've still got a hole in one of your spots that neither of us can get. For anyone interested in hearing the album, you can download the songs at this link: http://vinylorphanage.com/?p=162 (and don't worry, I did. The files are safe)

This is off of the first of 2 albums made by Jim Schoenfeld, *Schony. This album was mostly bluegrass/country-themed covers of songs by other artists, ranging from The Jimi Hendirx Experience's hit "All Along the Watchtower," to Jerry Lee Lewis' hit "Great Balls of Fire," to the Beatles. It only featured 2 original songs: this one, written by John Valby, and "Before," written by Schoenfeld. The album was credited only to Schoenfeld, despite Valby's role in it. Schoenfeld's second album, The Key Is Love (which was credited to Schoenfeld and Valby), consisted of only Schoenfeld-Valby originals.

BARBECUE IN HEAVEN
(John Valby)

Yee-hah!

There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there
I'm gettin' hungry just waitin' to go
There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there
I hope I get to go

Life's gone; work's hard; kids to raise and feed
And every day I gladly pray for the Judgment Day
There'll be a cloud in the sky, and the angels say
"Howdy, son! Come on in. Stick it on your tray"

There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there
I'm gettin' hungry just waitin' to go
There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there
I hope I get to go

When I was just a little boy, my daddy said, "Now, son,
Bury me with a bucket's fill when you put me in the ground
'Cause when I pass through the Pearly Gates and smell that pit-fire burnin'
Jesus cookin' barbecue ?unscrew all the Cokes and cown?

There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there
I'm gettin' hungry just waitin' to go
There'll be a barbecue in heaven when I get there
I hope I get to go
I hope I get to go

A nickel's a nickel and a dime's a dime
I'd sing another riff but we ain't got time!

I was listening to this again the other day and I believe I have that questionable verse:

When I was just a little boy, my daddy said, "Now, son,
Bury me with a bucket's fill when you put me in the ground
'Cause when I pass through the Pearly Gates and smell that pit-fire burnin'
Jesus cookin' barbecue I'll scrub the pork-skin down

Also, instead of "cloud in the sky" in stanza 2, it's cook out in the sky"

Hello: There is something strange going on here.I performed with the group called (The Good Time Convention)In The 70"s. We recorded tune Bar-B-Que in Heaven on our (Sounds Like album) October 1971.
This tune was written by Ted Lemley & Mike Tice.
Did Mike Tice give up the rights to this song?
If some one has the answer please contact me at DEddyB@comcast.net

Thanks

Looking at the two differently-spelled titles, perhaps it's two different songs.

Or, perhaps, one has been folk-processed by one of the many people who cannot imagine that "barbecue" contains no "q".

Though I can't find anything about your album or group online, it does appear as if Tice and Lemley copyrited a song entitled "Bar-B-Que In Heaven" in 1971. Here's the entry from the the 1971 US Copyright Catalog (July-December), p. 1747

BAR-B-QUE IN HEAVEN; m Ted Lemley, lyrics: Mike Tice . 2 p. (C) People Pleaser Music & Hunn Music; 12Nov71; EP293O18

It should be noted that a blatant rip like this was possibly from Schoenfeld; as I mentioned back in 2015, even co-star John Valby felt he wasn't properly credited throughout the process of the album, and I seem to recall other allusions about improperly cited credits in the album, though I can't seem to relocate those claims.

Dennis , do you mind sharing anything about your band? Not because I don't believe you but because I'm curious. Where were y'all from? What kind of music did you play?

Hello Cnd: I met Ted Lemley and Chris Von Volborth in the service,we were both in the Marne Glee Club. Ted played piano and I played percussion and Chris Saxophone. After we got out of the Army we were performing with the group called ( Friends of The Family),a show group.
Wayne Newton and Amato were our Agents out of Vegas.
Eventually this group broke up. We formed a new show group called ( The Good Time Convention)We were a show group that played covers. We also played Jazz ,and Jazz Funk music.
When we were performing in Myrtle Beach Mr Eric Hunn owner of the Bamboo Hut heard our group and offered to help us out by getting us recorded on a record. That's where we recorded Bar-B-Que in Heaven. We also recorded Sounds Like, What We Had Was Nice. These were original tunes that we had copyrighted. That was October of 1971.
If you have an email address I can send you an Mp3 of the songs that we recordered. My email address is DEddyB@comcast.net

The Goodtime Convention album came out in 1971.
The Schony album came out in 1973 a few years difference there.
Enough to raise an eyebrow.

No matter how the title is spelled it is lyrically the same.

Greetings, all!
I am A relative to the gentleman that played the drums for The Good Time Convention, the original players of this illusive track.
   So I decided to dig up a bit of gold and dirt on the history of this song, the ownership etc, and here's what I'd like to share and reiterate. Hopefully some of this will provide more answers than questions;

1.) So there's mention of John Valby and Schoenfeld doing a couple collab albums, one with a bunch of covers with the "exception" of Barbecue in Heaven and Before. The Schoenfeld version of the Barbecue song was done in 1973, with Valby assisting him. However, if you look into John Valby's Discog page, there are no songs or projects listed before 1974, and there's one collab album listed with Schoenfeld called "The Key Is Love". The Barbecue track is not listed there.

2.) Now this is speculation here, but the fact John Valby would collab on a song with wholesome Christian-esque lyrics raises some brows here. If you look at the Discogs, you're going to get an eyeful of dirty track names. Not sure an entertainer of this caliber would work on a gig like "Barbecue in Heaven" when he's got works such as "The Old Fart Cuts Another One." or "Sit on A Happy Face."

3.) CND pretty much solved the mystery in this situation; the song itself was published in 1971, officially in the US Copyright Catalog.
I looked through the official U.S Copyright page and directed me back to Archive.Org's link back. If anything, the Tice/Lemley/The Good Time Convention's version came first and is indeed the original.

4.) A gentle reminder that while Wikipedia can be a great resource for starting research, it is not always a reliable source of definitive information, as Wiki is still an open sourced website and anyone can dive in to edit it.

I have the original liner notes from when I downloaded the track back in 2015 -- the site is now dead -- I can send the official company credited with the song later tonight/tomorrow

CND, take the URL of the site and drop it into the "Wayback Machine" - the Internet Archive grabbed screen shots of lots of sites over the years. You may find the content.

Thanks The Tapperciser for summarizing your research, I agree with much of what you've said, and after listening to the song shared by Kerry, the similarities are very blatant. You are very correct in pointing out Valby's checkered past.

The *Schony album officially credited "Barbecue In Heaven" to John Valby, Selrach Music-Gallant Fox Music (BMI). Both appear to be entities owned(?) by/used by Valby exclusively for the copyrighting of his own music. So if you want to pursue legal recourse, those are the names to start with.

Dennis, I meant to mention in your previous post: I could be mistaken, but the Bamboo Hut is (I believe) one of the recording spots important to the development of Carolina Shag music and is not terribly far (in the grand scheme of things) from where I live. Just an interesting little factoid for your edification.

Thanks for the tip SRS -- I'm a big fan of the Internet Archive and the work they do, and have tried to help rescue many a dead link on Mudcat using their services. Sadly, though the page itself I linked above is archived, the zip file was not. I'll probably add the pictures to the existing Discogs page so that they can live on outside of my personal hoard of data.

I have sent an email to Dennis, but if any one of you want to send me the proper information for your album, I could help to create a page on Discogs (I'm also an active member on that site) for your band and that album. Although it would have no legal ramifications, it would help to further your point on the ownership of the song, in addition to being of interest to me, as well as probably other music collectors. If you create a membership here you may PM me, or I can proffer my email address.
