Lyr Req: Let Peace Prevail (Margaret J. Nelson)

Just heard "Let Peace Prevail" (it begins with "let us try what love can do") on Lunch with Folks at KBCS and wasn't quick enough to capture it. On an earlier anti-war song thread, "Beth" () said the song was printed in a "recent" issue of SingOut; could anyone post it here? It would be nice to refresh my memory with the tune too (even just numbers for relative note pitch).   Thanks.

Is this it?

I wrote LET PEACE PREVAIL in November 2001, after attending two
post-September 11 peace rallies. To the best of my ability, I tried to
express the core of the peace message, without badmouthing or blaming
anyone. (If peace is going to happen, ALL of us have to create it.)

The song has worked well for group singing at peace demonstrations,
folk festivals and concerts. We'll be singing it at Chicago's Federal Plaza
tomorrow morning. LET PEACE PREVAIL was published in the summer
issue of SING OUT!, but anyone who wants a lead sheet can get one by
sending a SASE to me: Margaret Nelson, 1114 W. Glenlake Ave. #2,
Chicago IL 60660.

LET PEACE PREVAIL
(Margaret Nelson)

Let us try what love can do
LET PEACE PREVAIL
To build this sad old world anew
LET PEACE PREVAIL

Chorus: LET PEACE PREVAIL, LET PEACE PREVAIL
IN OUR HEARTS AND IN OUR MINDS
                LET PEACE PREVAIL

(Got to) Feed the hungry, clothe the poor
LET PEACE PREVAIL
Can't afford the cost of war
LET PEACE PREVAIL

Old wrongs now we must forgive
LET PEACE PREVAIL
That ev'ry child on Earth may live
LET PEACE PREVAIL

Raise your voices, join your hands
LET PEACE PREVAIL
Justice and mercy in every land
LET PEACE PREVAIL

Let us try what love can do....

I don't remember the song having a chorus, but the station (when I called) said it came from an "M.J. Nelson" -- would that be you? It was indeed a beautiful song.   Letter with SASE in the mail.

No, no. I am NOT M.J Nelson, that was in the website I copied it from.

M. J. Nelson is Margaret Nelson, my singing partner of the last 20 years. I've been running off CDr's of the song for those interested, lead sheets are free, as Margaret wants folks to sing the song around as much as possible.

Joe/MMario, has Phil sent the score. If not please let me know. When I have time I'll whip up a basic choral version, unless the score already does this.

Regards, John

Hi, John - I found the song in the Summer 2002 issue of Sing Out! Magazine. Here are the notes on the song from Sing Out!
This beautiful song of peace comes from Chicago singer Margaret Nelson, mostly known for her solo, duo and group work (with partners Phil Cooper and Kate Early) presenting wonderful interpretations of traditional songs. With all of the fighting and destruction in the world today, it is inspiring to hear these words, simply asking for peace "in our hearts and in our minds," joined with a strong, evocative and singable melody. A recording of "Let Peace Prevail" is not yet released (except on the Sing Out! Songs CD), but you can find out about Margaret's other recordings (and news about when this one will be available) at http://members.aol.com/coopnel/ or by writing Cooper and Nelson at 6N631 Brierwood Drive, St. Charles, Illinois 60175-8402.
I've posted my transcription of the tune, and the tune from the Sing Out! website.

Phil...Have you considered posting it on your website? I've given my copy to my sister in the hopes she'll introduce it to school children. Mike.

Hey Mooh,

We haven't posted it on our website. We have since done a new version on our newest CD "Love and War" with a fuller cast of thousands (actually 7) chorus. We're still a little behind on posting downloadable songs on the site. I'll tell Margaret, she'll be pleased to hear about it.

Yup, I love the cd version! I'm glad this thread was revived as it may prove particularly timely. Let peace prevail.

Regards to all.

Peace, Mooh.
