Somehow we can manage to do the same amount of screaming and finger-pointing, but it doesn't have the same feeling of combat fatigue that I've found in all the focking war coverage (I know, the season is early yet, and the closest the Mariners or Giants will get to a pennant is if they buy one at a souvenir stand). It seems certain that the Expos will leave Montreal and head to the DC area, or perhaps Portland,(a long shot). A bad stadium and the Cdn dollar didn't help the situation. Even with the new baseball agreement, the gap between the have and have nots will probably stay the same, which takes away from the integrity of the game. Economics rules the roost in all pro sports. At least this season for ball fans, there's no threat of a strike, so it will be business as usual. My name for the new Washington team would be the 'Bushers'. But really everyone, don't we ALL love the Cubbies? Who among us wouldn't pull for them should they get into the World Series? Well, except for the fans of the other team of course. As for Cincinnati, their outfield could be one of the best if Griffey plays up to par. Adam Dunn and Aus Kearns complete the trio. If things go right Dunn could be another George Foster. But the Reds may switch Boone to second base to make room for Brandon Larson at third. That would leave aging Barry Larkin at SS which could weadken the middle infield defense. As for the Phills, yes they have some power sluggers, but they better put some younger arms at the back end of the rotation. The bullpen is a little iffy as well. |

I'm still basking in the days of Jim Bunning, Chris Short, John Callison, Richie (that's right, Richie) Allen, Tony Taylor...hell, I still remember all their numbers! (32, 41, 6, 15, and 8, since you asked.) And what's this I hear about a new stadium? What's wrong with Shibe Park? (Actually it had already been renamed Connie Mack Stadium when I went there, but my dad always called it Shibe Park.) Aloha, Mark Oh, and Bobert, your dates are a teeny bit off. I saw Roberts pitch in the first Phillies game I ever went to, but that was, I believe, in '60 or '61. He retired before the '64 season. When I'm on the road performing, which I am frequently, I'll always try and catch a minor-league game. Single-A, double-A, triple-A, the top ticket price is around seven bucks, there isn't a bad seat in the house, nada the players, coaches and umps are hustling their asses off. The players sign autographs for little kids, the beer and hotdogs taste just as good, and it won't bankrupt a family of four for a night at the ballyard. Hell, I love high-school and Legion ball too. We must remind ourselves, the lords of baseball, as well as the players, that is still and always will be OUR(the fans) game. We are the paying customers who've long deserved a whole better. Naming Stadia after corporations is monstrous, and having to see ads behind home plate is demeaning to this great sport. I know that sports is all about money nowadays, but it doesn't mean that it ain't sickening. Now Rick, you just gotta relax a bit. We're 3 games into the season, and even though the Bronx Bombers just sent a strong message to these young Jays, let's give these guys time to mature and blossom. If J.P. and about 26 or so other GM's had the Yankees payroll, I think things would be a lot different. Granted they spend their money pretty wisely, unlike the crappy Mets. Somebody once said that baseball is a funny game, so when the Jays go back to NY next week, it could be that they take 3 out 4 games. Unlikely yes, but strange things happen in the world of sports. Maybe some nutbar in the Yanks pr dept. will put bird droppings on a Jays hat, and give us extra incentive to beat those guys. The next great young hurler in the bigs is Mark Prior, former number 1 pick of the Cubbies. Looks like much better days ahead for Dusty's boys. |

For the first few years I lived in Hawaii there was a Hawaii Winter Baseball League. Only 4 teams (Hilo Stars--our home team, West Oahu Cane Fires, Maui Stingrays and Honolulu Sharks). A and AA players (including two women at one point). The stadium in Hilo was small and friendly, you got to see the players up close and really feel a part of the game. Sadly, the league couldn't sustain itself and folded after 4 years. I miss it. A local journalist wrote a book about the league, called The Boys of Winter. Just in case anyone might be interested. One of the nicer things in my life is that I live close to a city with a minor league ball club. I've been watching the Columbus Clippers since they were the Redbirds back in the 50's and then the Jets. They're the AAA Club for the Yankees and you can see a good game and have a fun night with the family and spend less than 50 bucks including gas, parking, food, and assorted ballpark junk. Additionally, there is someone who's giving away tickets for almost every game when a block is bought by some company. Last year and almost every year we had free tickets to "Dime-A-Dog Night" and our two families went (4 adults, 4kids). We got there early and were able to upgrade to box seats, ate around 40 dogs, bought a couple of caps, bought drinks and some other munchies too, and went home after seeing a damn good ball game feeling great because the whole night for EIGHT people had cost about $65.00. Geeziz, I can't get a pair of decent Reds tickets for that. Any night's good but the promo nights are especially easy to get free tickets for and like I say, if you want to do the upgrade, it's cheap. We also hit "Sliders Night" last year sponsored by the Slider maker----White Castle. White Castle burgers at a quarter a piece......Man, you can be sicker than hell for only a few bucks!!! But the ball is always good and that's the main thing. The stadium is park style, close in to downtown, and they went back to grass a few years ago.....just great!!! Wayne and I always enjoy the games and end up commenting invariably about the action. On a good night you see damn near every kind of play and it's rarely boring. If I wasn't just getting through an acute attack of diverticulitis we'd load the van up with both families and go tonight! Check the coupon on the Columbus Clippers Home Page. Spaw |

I walked down to the screen (this WAS a minor league park) and his pitches were simply lethal. No control, each fastball potential death, and Nashville knew it. I think you played first base in your early years, and then moved into the DH position. Scouts tell me that you were all timber and no leather. Is that true? And yes, the Jays will probably go to 0-4 tonite against the Twinkies, but just maybe we can keep the opposition to under 10 runs, and I'll consider that a moral victory. Speaking of the Twins, I wonder if Kirby Puckett had O.J.'s team of lawyers working for him? In that case, perhaps he would have put on his undersized centrefielder's glove to prove his innocence. |

Between them and the fact that I see 10 to 20 spring training gamesw a year, I hope Orlando never gets a big league team. There was never anything wrong with my glove, I just got to the point where I couldn't get it in the way of the ball fast enough! Now of course that wasn't the ONLY problem in my declining baseball years. I simply was the second slowest runner in the league. The slowest was Marc, my shrink, who was 60! Twice I hit rockets to right field .....and was thrown OUT at first! That really DOES hurt. Now, in the last three years of my career another problem was created. Some total dork claimed that too many cheap home runs were goin' over the right field fence......so they made them into DOUBLES! Jeesus Christ, the five or six 'blooper' guys in the league, didn't get any more homers....but I didn't either, and I hit mine a long ways! That was about the end........oh....and we bought a house, so Heather wouldn't let me out to play twice a week. I had to stay home and teach banjo.....bummer! The Jays WIN!!!! Rick |

Not a bit fair, but what respect, big fella! If you're interested, the rest of the scouting report on you reads as follows- 1- has a bit of trouble with the spitter and knuckle ball, but hits the the shit out of the heater and curveball. 2- Tends to hustle more with two outs, because he knows there's cold beer waiting for him in the dugout. 3- Has been know to do some serious 'beaver shooting', so most women in the 'box' seats tend to wear slacks, even on hot days. 4- Like the Babe, he tends to wolf down a hot dog or two between innings, but claims he gets more energy as the game goes on. 5- He once lifted his arm and pointed with his index finger towards the outfield fence, indicating where he would deposit the ball, however, the evidence later showed he noticed a young guitar player forming an incorrect chord on his guitar. He gave the poor kid proper shit, and then took him out for a pop after the game. Once a teacher, always a teacher. The Sporting News noted that this particular scout was immediately fired after filing this report. Finally, if you want to know anything about baseball trivia between 1940-1960, Rick's your man. Anything later, it's just a rumour to the poor man. |
