BS: Googles got your number, and map to...

I just thought I would pass this on. I recieved an e-mail today telling me to go into google search and type in my phone number with the area code and dashes and do a search. If you are in a phone book in the US it will have a map directly to your home, if you click on the phone by your name, you can write to them if you don't want to be on their map-search. Just as a pre-caution more to children to watch who you give your phone number to. check it out
Peace. Rustic

Jaysus! That's offensive and intrusive, if ya ask me! Fortunately, it still shows our number listed for the people who had it before. No wonder i get so many wrong numbers!

Thank, RR

If you go to Switchboard.com you can find maps, addresses, phone numbers and e mail for anyone with a listed phone number.

I moved last June.

My current number had 2 hits in Google because it's listed on some web pages, but not the directory stuff. My old number worked, but the maps never were right & the building has since been torn down.

Really no point Guest, just telling you about this. I think it is being sent out mostly for a safety for kids. Lot of wackos out there you know.

please understand..it is NOT Google that is doing this. This is public information that has been available on the net for several years. As Sorcha says, Switchboard and several other places have had directories...including reverse lookup... available. You can find anyone who does not take pains to NOT be found. I have found old friends this way for several years. My number is in the phone book, so I can be looked up...that simple, and just today it proved to be a benefit to people that needed to find me.

There ARE security issues out there developing that may concern us, as our conservative government looks for more ways to track anyone they choose.....but this is not a biggie, unless you need extra privacy....in which case, your option is to get an "unpublished" phone #...not just 'unlisted'.

I checked several of my friends and family in rural areas. The map showed the right county, but the "star" was several miles off-point on all of them!

My number showed no results!

Never had a listed number...never will.

Just part of the innate paranoia family paranoia

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

It is always a good idea to change your number every three years....and change credit cards also.

Mine has always been non-published, non-listed, too.

It might be worth noting the recommendation from several sources - while it's "cute" to give your kids "kiddy style" email addys, it does open the door to people who look for juvenile "victims."

If at all possible, give your kids Adult looking email names if you're letting them hook up. (Of course, subject to your ability to get the little monsters to take any good advice.)

It will also help you keep track of who they're talking to, if you've got more than "FROM: fuzzybunny" with "SUBJECT: Way So Coool!" when something gets dropped in your mailbox and you need to bring it to their attention.

(Side note: lots of those "cute-kid" names look like the ones favored by porn SPAM sites too.)

As to Google being able to look up a phone number - I thought that's one of the things it's supposed to do. And any $25 roadmap program can show you where any address is - or at least a commercial approximation to it.

- and forgot to mention -

MSN's reverse phone number lookup works fairly well, although it's not anywhere near a complete listing. Once you locate someone, its only one or two clicks to get the name, address, and phone numbers of all their next door neighbors - so you can call the neighbors to check up on things if your "target" doesn't answer?

In the UK a 'postcode' (US=zipcode)will identify a single street, and a series of approx. 15 addresses in that street (Businesses can have an individual code) so if you want to find somewhere in the UK, an enquiry on Ordnance Survey will get you a map centred on the address you require.
