BS: Destination Imagination - Anyone Else ?

Are any other Mudcatter's involved in Destination Imagination or it's predecessor Odyssey of the Mind?

I'm a Team Manager of a 4th and 5th Grade "Once Improve A Time" team here in Maryland. They took second in their Region (Maryland West Central) and the State Tournament is Saturday. That's why I haven't been around the Mudcat Lately. But I just had to boast a little because I'm real proud of what they have done.

For those of you that don't know DI is a program that helps kids develop creative thinking and team building skills. It goes from 1st grade all the way up to college level. The kids have to perform one "Central Challenge" and one "Instant Challenge" in each tournament.
My Team chose the improv central challenge where they preselected 2 characters and 2 events from 6 classic fairy tales. In the challenge they have 30 minutes to prepare a 6 minute skit that incorporates 1 of the characters and 1 the events (randomly chosen so that they are not from the same story) and a surprise setting that is provided to them by the judges. The skit must include a humerous lesson learned and show off one improvisational technique. They must alsoo make a unique functional object out of newspaper and tape that changes size or moves, and can only use newspaper and tape for costumes, props, and scenary. Nothing can be pre-made. It truly is amazing what the kids can come up with.

In the instant challenge they have from 4 to 6 minutes to tackle a surpise problem that can vary from composing a song to building a tower as high as possible out of newspaper and tape that can hold as much weight as possible.

In both they are judged on creativity and teamwork.

So wish us luck, and hope to see some other 'catters in Globals in Knoxville in late May.

Hi GutBucketteer, good luck tommorrow. My daughter is practing as I post & my wife is her team's manager. They'll be going to States too. If both make it to 'world' we'll have to cross paths in Tennesse. Any way, best of luck to you & the team. Barry

We had a wonderful time at state, and learned a lot. They didn't make it to globals, but they all want to try again next year.

The team had to make an improv skit around the Mouse from the Lion and the Mouse, Jack cutting down the beanstalk from Jack and the Bean Stalk, and a surprise setting of "At a Frog Jumping Contest". Their story had a crazy announcer, and a mouse named Jack in a cage made out of recycled beanstalks. Jack was the prize in the jumping contest. He didn't like that and so he chewed his way out through the beanstalks. The moral of the story was "don't use recycled materials if you want to keep something in." It was pretty good, but not their best performance. The pressure got to them, and I spent some time afterwards smoothing disappointment and hurt feelings. We did have fun marching from place to place though since I brought kazoos, nose flutes, and harmonicas and we made an impromptu kazoo band as we moved about.

Barry, tell your daughter and wife GOOD LUCK !!!!
If you have never been, go to the awards ceremony at the end of the day. Even if the team doesn't win, it is great fun.

Sorry Gang that I missed this, but don't you all remember the young boy named Adam and his mother who logged on here a couple of years ago and asked for help with "Henry Martin" which they were using as part of their D-I team competition? Bob Nelson (Deckman) caught it early and really gave them more info than they could believe. Adam and his Mom stayed around during the competition to let us know how things were going. They were here in Ohio and I tried to get to the State Competition but it was just prior to my Valve replacement surgery and I had tests to do that day. They did well and sadly after awhile we lost touch with them, but it was a lot of fun sharing his enthusiasm and his team's new found love for folk music.

It is really amazing seeing the enthusiasm of the kids at all levels. My wife judged "Theater Smarts" where the kids had to write their own play around a performance that was DIsrupted by an event, but had to continue on. They had 100 dollars to build the sets, cosutmes, etc. The sets had to include a part that transformed/moved. One group made an ice rink out of AOL disks and their disruption was when one of the skaters tounges got stuck to the ice.

It's funny, but as they kids get older the presentations are more polished but overall not near as creative or "outside the box".

My team took 6th in Once Improv a Time.
