It's almost that time of year again. So who else is going to this little festival . Lots of fun, good beer, good company and Andy Jackson's own inimitable brand of mayhem!

Brenda and I will be there, since we're going to stay with friends in the area on the thursday, attending the Newport FC that evening(With Bill McKinnon), and then on to the Festival for the weekend. Can't wait!!!!!
It's the first festival of the season for us, cos we couldn't make Crediton this year so we're looking forward to meeting old friends, and making some new ones.

Andy tells me there are no bunks left so I guess it's the floor, on a trusty air mattress ( which isn't very trusty as it happens...might be time for a new one)....but at least there isn't so far to fall :) Do come,Hil, I'm dying to meet you!

Blast! And I do so want to meet / hear you too!!! If I can't work this one out I'm sure we'll bump into each other somewhere else :-) Glad you're getting to Miskin though!!!!

We are hoping to get to Miskin but a lot will depend on being able to drag Mick out to buy a camper before then. I didn't fare too well on the diabetic front at Crediton as far as meals were concerned. I don't think I could manage 4 days of it.

For those who like 'rounds' (and I'm not referring to beer), the local version of "Campfire's burning" which I have heard frequently at Miskin since I first camped there in the 1950s:

Come to Miskin; Come to Miskin:
For a wetting, For a wetting:
Rain, Rain; Rain, Rain;
And still more to follow (or 'and still more tomorrow')

Guru: little chance of getting lost. Look at the small map in 'how to find us' at the site in the first message. Zoom out slightly (2 bars to the left (towards the minus) and you will see the map showing the M4 (Junction 34). From there take the road signposted for 'Llantrisant' and after one set of traffic lights Miskin is signposted to your left. Just follow the road through.
The original map is not centred on the Miskin Arms which is at the junction immediately below the 'n' of Miskin. The Scout campsite (the Mill & The Cottage) are slightly further down the road to the left of the Miskin Arms. over the railway bridge, and the carpark is to the left before the river bridge.
After the Miskin Arms, take it slowly as the road is single car/van width to cross the railway, followed by a sharp left hand bend, so oncoming traffic is only seen at the last moment!

Subject: Lyr Add: Miskin at Easter
From: Snuffy

For those who weren't at the survivor's session this afternoon, here are the lyrics to Miskin at Easter as I meant to sing them. The song is based on John Jacob Niles' Venezuela and not, as you might think from the title, on Dancing at Whitsun. (Perhaps somebody should do "The folkies go miskin' at Easter").

MISKIN AT EASTER
(Vaughan Hully)

I met her in Miskin at Easter
With a tankard in her hand.
What was her name? She didn't say
But I knew she'd do to spend the day
Singing songs in Miskin at Easter.
Singing songs in Miskin at Easter.

She sang a song, a song with lyrics quite blue
A song with lyrics quite blue.
Because she knew what she could do
With all the tricks I knew that she knew
For singing songs in Miskin at Easter.
For singing songs in Miskin at Easter.

Last night in the bar, the singing went on and on
The singing went on and on.
And I was having a chat with Ron
When I turned round, she was gone
Gone away from Miskin at Easter.
Gone away from Miskin at Easter.

Her lingo was strange, but the sound of her beautiful voice,
The sound of her beautiful voice.
Will haunt me and taunt me, and give me no choice
I must find that girl from the land of Max Boyce
Maybe next year in Miskin at Easter,
Maybe next year in Miskin at Easter,

In line 1 the first syllable of Easter is decorated, and at the end of each verse the first syllable of Miskin is decorated. For those who are curious, verse 3 is almost entirely factual; the rest is a mixture of pure truth, embroidered truth and fantasy. But I ain't saying which is which!

WassaiL! V

(PS - any chance of a singable Welsh translation, Nigel?!?)

As I collect the shattered remnants of my beer soaked brain about me, forcing my battered vocal chords to whisper to the kids to make yet another mug of tea ( a la Marlene Dietrich),contemplate the large amount of Wales I seem to have brought back on my jeans and the large amount of money I have not,I can only say..."Bloody great festival, what a blast...what time do you want me back next year?" Thanks to Andy and all his helpers, thanks to all the great people I met, thanks to all the great singers and musicians...what a weekend :)

Hi,
Well we cheated and had a couple of days in the Forest of Dean on the way, Miskin was, as ever fantastic. Loads of wonderful singing music and most of all people. We arrived back in Cornwall last night about 8, and I still need to sleep Left the singing on Sunday night at quarter to 4 in the morning and it was still going strong. I got back to the camper to find that the dog had munched his way through a bag of sugar and then thrown it up all over the interior, at the moment I opened the camper door, my eldest daughter who had been sleeping in Double Entendre's bunks till we left did the same thing outside. I spent half the night cleaning up the mess and the other half tending to my daughter, who finally ran out of stomach contents at 7 am, by which time of course I had gone into body clock overdrive and was wide awake! (though NOT coherent!) Following a good night's sleep we are all now back in the land of the semi-normal and I am just flicking thru my piccies. I still haven't worked out who some of you are, and managed to get to know others of you. Whatever, though a very tiring festival it was worth every penny! Well Done Andy and Gang - and see you all again soon I hope.
Cheers,
Lucy

Jude,
I have to confess, I have a piccie of you, it's not compromising, just not complimentary! at The Windsor, sitting next to Snuffy, whilst he is singing, I think that you were a little jaded or tired! I don't know if I am yet cruel enough to put it up for public viewing, I'll certainly print a copy for you, for the next time I see you - oh, and Guru, after Crediton, you seemed a little lacking in confidence about your singing, I have to say that you sang beautifully when I sat next to you on Saturday lunchtime in the loft, it was a joy to listen to!

ZM: Yes I was there for the whole weekend except Sunday which I spent with my parents who live in Miskin. My original intention was to spend the day with them and slope off to the mill for the evening session. But when I woke up on Sunday my chest felt like lead and I was very wheezy due to the smoke from Sat night so I decided I needed to take the entire day off to recover. I'm not surprised I looked tired in any pics taken on the Monday in the Windsor it has that effect when breathing becomes hard work. I'm told you had problems with your "new" camper van and so only made a flying visit just for the Sunday. I'm sorry to have missed you but no doubt I'll see you somewhere else.

Thanks so much for your kind words Lucy - I must admit that I was a little overwhelmed by the Miskin experience & that may have made me a bit more nervous than in Crediton.

Lovely Miskin - wonderful people, singing & 'craic'. Will attempt to build up my stamina to cope with the festival weekends this year - wish I'd been able to stay up for the singing on Sunday night, wilted completely & had to crash. What a wimp!!

What a super festival - Huge thanks to Andy, the organisers & all the volunteers - hugs to all who were there, roll on next year *G*

I don't know who posted them either but I wish they'd aimed just a little further to the right or cropped it a bit so it cut me out altogether rather than posting less than half a face. BTW they are not (as far as I know) catters but the person in between guru & I is Verna Connolly (Secretary of Upton Folk Festival) and the chap the other side of guru is Chris Wenham (who sings with Cllr as a booked act).

A wonderful festival - meeting numerous good friends, many of the Mudcatters, loads of smashing singing, a bit of playing my concertina and too much drinking ... what more can one say?

I will particularly remember the survivors session at the Windsor Hotel on Monday afternoon for Dave4Guild playing an amazing guitar solo and Snuffy singing "Miskin at Easter" (the one published on this thread) as his 53rd different song in the weekend - yes he sang 53 different songs in 3 and a bit days. Brilliant!

I went down to Miskin to visit a folk fest,
And see if the weekend held something for me.
I'd seen it on 'Mudcat' and thought it would be best
To visit 'cos some of my weekend was free
So I picked up my camera, and gathered my songbooks
My longing for singing. I gave it its head.
But when I arrived in that small Miskin village
The pub had no 'Hwyl',
And it all seemed quite dead!

Verse 2
I got to 'The Miskin' a pub with a hist'ry
And thought I might meet with someone from 'The 'Cat'
But as I sat drinking, I thought 'tis a myst'ry
These 'folk' are all locals, so where am I at?
But then I was 'pointed' down to the Scout campsite
Where folk were carousing inside Miskin Mill
I got introduced to some folk from the 'Cat site,
And sat there, conversed there, and drank there until……..

Chorus
.. There was singing and drinking,
And dancing and drinking
Lace making, and drinking
'Corn dollies' and beer
I had such a time there that now I am thinking
I'll be back at Miskin at Easter next year!

Verse 3
So now that I've found what these folk fests are like, I
Am looking for somewhere new that I can go.
I've heard about Cambridge, Glynllifon and Sidmouth
And dancing with 'Obby 'Orse down at Padstow
But if I can make it
My wallet may take it
To Upton Upon Severn I'm hoping to go.
If I can just get there, I think it would be fair
To give up the booze for the weekend …although…

Chorus
There's singing and drinking,
And dancing and drinking
Lace making, and drinking
'Corn dollies' and beer
I'll have such a time there that now I be thinking
I'll have to do folk fests throughout all the year!

Goodness! Just catching up on all of this - looks like you all had a wonderful time!

What was the song, Jude dear, and Nigel??

Lots of familiar faces in the background of the pics too, must have been some great singing.
And two lovely new songs.
Snuffy: I need to know more :0)
And Nigel: See you at Upton!
(Following weekend Holmfirth, then Selby, then Leith Harbour, Liverpool, Beverly/Alcester....)

Well what can I say? So glad you all had such a good time it makes it worth all the hard work. I'm gonna buy a ticket next year, it sounds like a good festival.
Seriously, thanks to everyone, catters or not, for your support, and I have already started planning for next year.
Wouldn't mind a few photos for the website.

Thanks again, Andy.
