We're planning on going to the Obby Oss Festival this year and we're told there will be a lot of singing. Anyone know which pubs we should check out?

May day eve, you report to the Ring o Bells in St Issey bout 8.30 p.m for a v good sing session where Webber /Fentiman attend.
At 11.30 it all stops and we then go to Padstow for the night-song
On may day you can start at the ringers for a sing or get eary into Padstow before its closed off to traffic.
Singing has been known to happen in the London Inn during the afternoon.
The golden Lion will have mainly a noisy boozy music session on both nights.
If Chris Brinn is over he'll be leading.
In the evening its back to the ringers.
If its fine, say heelo to me on the Harbour near the waters-edge/ferry
I'll be in Padstow on the eve, early before going to Ringers as theys putting up the sycamore.
If it pisses down with rain its your fault.

If you'd like a little preview, check website www.jeanritchie.com It shows some excerpts from the old film, "Oss! Oss! Wee Oss!" made in 1952 by George Pickow, Jean Ritchie(his wife), Alan Lomax and Peter Kennedy. The Golden Lion was headquarters then.

>>>May day eve<<<

My birthday! I may just have to add Cornwall to the itinerary for next year's trip to Britian after all.

Cheers, Hester

Breezy:

Thanks for the info. We'll be staying in Newquay both nights. What time is Padstow closed to traffic on May Day?

We shouldn't have any trouble finding you. We'll just mention mudcat to everyone we see until someone doesn't look at us strangely. You'll surely be able to recognize a couple of Yanks.

Bev and Jerry,
I too will be in the Ringers, on Mayday night, that is, assuming the NEW landlord is as good as the old one and lets us! I'll be easy to recognise, I'm the one with a big bloke with a beard (LOL)
Cheers, Lucy

The new landlord wont have any choice.
Its tradition.
They shut Padstow off at about 10.00 but I have got in by 8.00 and stuffed out at Walkers
The kids oss appears early so its a good idea to get in and park by 8 to feel the whole thing come alive.
But if it rains its your fault.
I like lucy's songs, i spoke to her at wadebridge.Did he have a beard then?

Oops! How did that happen? Oh, well- I wish I could be in Padstow again. I went once, in 1978 when I was young and foolish. I'd love to go back!

Thanks- and here's hoping you'll tell us all about Oss! Oss! Wee Oss! 2003. The film was shown last week at Cooper Union in NYC as part of The People's Poetry Gathering and the conference, "Folk Music in the American Century: An Alan Lomax Tribute." Crowds throughout, and they seemed to like the film. How I'd love to go back again! Jean R.
