11 Apr 03 - 05:17 PM (#931377) Subject: BS: Lawsuits Against Terror Sponsors From: Mrrzy This Wash Post article called Pain and Suffering is about people who either survived terrorism, or survived someone who didn't, and who are now allowed to sue the governments sponsoring terrorism (and are doing so). The Post doesn't like it. However, this particular article somehow missed the first bombing of any US Embassy, so this other article is about the ongoing trial about that one. What do we think about these? I am interested in the group's opinions. |

While I do not mean to make light of your own experiences, it seems to me there is little chance of anyone gaining any monetary satisfaction from such actions. NOT that I don't think it is deserved, it just seems kind of futile. I doubt that our country would want to be more aggressive about it as it could find its own government in such suits, rightly or wrongly. People who suffer from terrorism do deserve all of the help they can get to recover, but I also think at some point they have to let go of the past and try to move on. No offence intended to anyone who may have suffered. kat |

If we are honestly seeking to become a nation under law, then terrorism -- ours or anyone else's against us -- should be actionable under that law. It does open a can of worms about terrorism versus freedom struggles, though -- I am sure the good Cornwallis felt proud of his anti-terrorist campaigns. A |

Also, note that although that first bombing was nearly 20 years ago, the law is new, so it isn't as if people sat around with recourse and didn't take it till now. There is no statute of limitations on murder. The past is IN us, as someone put it. I heard the testimony of someone exactly my twins' age at that time, about to turn 8, when her revered20-year old brother was killed during the parents' divorce, without ever growing the feet of clay he surely had, as do we all. What chance did that child have to grow up to be a 27-year old capable of, as you say, putting the past behind her? (I go to check my html, now). |
