14 Apr 03 - 08:17 AM (#933000) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: adieu to lovely garrison From: belfast My own copy of the Rosie Stewart CD (which, by the way, is a lovely bit of work and I can't recommend it too highly) is not immediately to hand and it won't be for about a week. But if no one else has transcribed the words by then I'll do it. I suppose that this CD is the only place to get the words for I think that Rosie learnt the song from her father. |

I consider myself lucky to have found this cd while on holiday in Ireland a while back, not sure I'd have discovered it in the UK. If I get a chance before Friday I'll transcribe & post here :-) |

15 Apr 03 - 01:58 PM (#934065) Subject: Lyr Add: ADIEU TO LOVELY GARRISON (from R Stewart) From: My guru always said ADIEU TO LOVELY GARRISON From the singing of Rosie Stewart who heard this song from her Father Adieu to lovely Garrison where I was bred and born Though far away I love you still as the sunshine of the morn Your shady groves where I did rove with schoolmates one and all Ah to view the fish down in the lake and the salmon at the falls Adieu to (Hamilton, Knock, Raven and Coranmore) There's not a field within your plains but I've travelled o'er and o'er Through (Brala) bogs your sloping hills there created with heather green In the silent hours I sit and think on the happy days I seen Adieu to foreign (Cassidy) likewise to Belleek town On Loch Erne's banks it's (........) stands and it's equal can't be found Through (Camelon) groves where youths do rove and lovers gather there To enjoy the scenes that can't be found at (........) race or fair Adieu to you fond Doorin with your beauty spread far and wide Your golden strand both gay and grand washed by the Atlantic tide In the Summer time the strangers come some pleasures for to see But alas it grieves me to the heart to be far away from thee Adieu to you Loch Melvin with your islands grand and gay Where I did rove with my true love in the pleasant month of May For to take a boat and go afloat and to cross your waters blue And to climb up (Sheean) mountain it's valleys for to view Adieu to (Sheean) mountain where the juniper nuts do grow If ever I return again 'tis there I'm sure to go Not forgetting Ballyshannon and the winding banks of Erne Where the primrose grows in lovely rows among your Irish fern Now to conclude and finish to Kiltyclogher I'll bid adieu Where I spent many the pleasant hour in the valley of famed (Kilcool) And if ever I return again sure I'll visit you once more And I'll sing in praise of my infant days around Loch Melvin's shore The place-names and/or words that I can't quite make out are all in brackets and italics. My maps helped me with a couple but I'm really stumped with the rest of them. Could anyone help with these please? |
17 Apr 03 - 11:13 AM (#935463) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu to Lovely Garrison From: My guru always said When I posted the incomplete lyrics above, I PM'd monica to let her know & she replied to me with the following information regarding the missing words. Hopefully we can get these words verified as her 'lough erin' should surely be 'lough Erne' as that's part of the local area. I'd be very interested in more opinions. Hil ..................................................... hi l am the person who wanted the words, luckily my dad sent me the proper words,l have,nt got time to write out the whole song so i,ll just give you the town lands 2nd verse adieu to almadoney, knockaraven, and corranmore through brollagh bogs 3rd verse on lough erins banks your pottery stands through camalon groves 4th verse adieu to you bondoran bon-dor-an 5th verse and to climb up shee-on mountain 7th verse now to conclude and finiish to kiltyclogher in the valley of famed kill=coo |
21 Apr 03 - 07:39 AM (#937008) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu to Lovely Garrison From: belfast I'm glad that "my guru always said" completed this transcription before I started. Better guesses at the place names than I would have made. Having admitted that, I can make a couple of suggestions. Verse 2, line 3 "sloping hills there created with heather green" should read "sloping hills decorated with heather green". Verse 4 is, I think, about Bundoran in County Donegal. As a matter of small interest, if not trivia, Kiltyclogher (in the 7th and final verse) is the birthplace of Sean MacDiarmada, one of the signatories of the Proclamation in 1916. Before that he used to drive a tram on the Falls Road in Belfast. |
21 Apr 03 - 07:42 PM (#937408) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu to Lovely Garrison From: My guru always said Belfast: many thanks! I think 'decorated' is probably right, but I'm still going for 'Doorin' rather than 'Bundoran'. On the Atlantic coast near Garrison there is a bay called 'Doorin' with a stretch of sandy beach (strand), it fits well with the verse content - that's my reasoning anyway :-) |
26 Apr 03 - 11:03 AM (#940664) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu to Lovely Garrison From: belfast You could well be right. For, with great respect to the good people of Bundoran, the fact that I am not in that fair locality does not give me cause for great lamentation. Maybe Doorin has more to recommend it. |
