Boston Mass. Folk Clubs

From: GUEST,Arnie

We're planning to visit Boston (US, not Lincolnshire!) in August for a couple of weeks. Any Catters know of folk clubs or pubs worth visiting and what nights they are on? Also, if we hire a car what sights can we see without driving for a few hundred miles? Any info on the region's music, food & drink (any good beers?) gratefully received....

Arnie

What kind of sights are you interested in? There are TONS of places within easy driving of Boston - ranging from Salem, Plymouth, the "Stonehenge of the Americas"; much seascape, at least one castle

The premier folk club in New England is Passim's (www.clubpassim.com)in Harvard Square,Cambridge-just across the river from Boston. It is easily accessible via the subway system -Harvard Square stop.Vance Gilbert is playing there on the 19th-highly recommended...North of Boston in Lowell is another great club called Capo's (www.caposcafe.com).I'm going there this Friday to see John Stewart....Southwest of Boston in Easton is The Blackthorne Tavern (www.blackthornetavern.com)-but I don't think they do much in the summer.

The newsletter published by the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston (link given earlier in this thread) is a treasure trove of club and concert listings -- not just events sponsored by FSSGB, which tend to be mostly traditional music, but other music and dance venues in and near Boston. Go to their website and click the e-mail link for Suzanne Mrozak, who may be able to mail you a copy of their most recent newsletter so you can see the range of stuff available. (Unfortunately, the newsletter is not posted on the website.)

The sea chantey sing at the Press Room in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is not a long drive from the Boston area (an hour, maybe). That gathering has many devoted followers here on the Mudcat. Try sending a PM to Jeri to get more details.

There's an Irish pub with regular sessions. PM Big Mick or Barry Finn for details.

Cuisine: seafood! Clams. Cod. Lobster rolls. Scallops. Wonderful Italian food on Boston's North End.
Sights: Thoreau's Walden Pond in Concord. Many historic sites relating to the Unpleasantness of 1776. Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge (also home of Harvard U.), where many famous folks are buried and the birdwatching is world-class. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Museum of Fine Arts. The Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park (baseball season will still be in high gear in August). You won't lack for things to do; the hard thing will be choosing.

Arnie -- The Press Room Shanty/Forebitter Session is the second Saturday of each month, for August, the 9th. In addition we have mixed traditional song/instrumental sessions there every Friday from 4 to 9 PM. These latter sessions tend to be often chaotic, but if I know you're coming, I can try to moderate the madness.

PM me with more specific dates and I'll let you know what else might be going on north of Boston. Hope to meet you -- Tom

I'll be in Boston/Plymouth from April 28th for four days and then on to Seattle/Victoria/Olympic Peninsula until May 13th - then back to the UK.

I too would be glad of any information on sessions, open mics, folk clubs that are on in those areas at those times

Roger

The Burren has live sessiuns every night (after 10 pm), and duringt he day on Saturday and Sunday, too.
Matt Murphy's is on Thursday night.
O'Leary's Pub on Sunday night.
The Green Briar on Mondays, I think.
Brendan Behan's on Saturday early evening.

that's just off the top o' me head...

Sounds like we'll be spoiled for choice! Many thanks to all for the info and the links, which I'll be looking at in more detail later. As I just love seafood, Boston sounds like my kind of holiday destination. May see you at a Press Room shanty session Tom but dates yet to be finalised - I think it'll be around the second & third weeks in August. The sights I'm mainly interested in are historical places, although as a twitcher, a bit of birdwatching will not come amiss either...

Fort Constitution is on the coast of New Castle, next to Portsmouth. In December of 1774, when it was called Fort William and Mary, it was the site of the first action taken by colonists against the Crown.

In travelling north from Boston, you can stop in Salem MA where 19 innocents were murdered by Puritans in 1692. Plum Island, next to Newburyport MA is the site of a large bird sanctuary. There's another wildlife refuge in Newington NH on land that used to be part of an airbase.

At some point, I'll send you some of the websites for local historical sites.

Is the song session at Paddy Burke's still going on? I would commend it as a very friendly and welcoming bunch. Some of the sessions in other places that I attended were very clannish and unfriendly, but never at Paddy Burke's.

Mick

Barry beat me to it; that session is no more. Too bad. No effort being made to start it up in an alternate venue, either (it stopped because Paddy Burke's decided not to allow us to meet there anymore).

I find it amusing that our visitors are being asked to PM Barry or Big Mick for info on Boston sessiuns when neither of them actually lives here, or in Massachusetts for that matter!!!! :)

I live here, though, in the big bad beantown...there's several sessiuns to choose from, on any given night of the week, but no singers' sessiuns in the city proper anymore; you have to drive all the way to Canton for that and it's so big I hear you don't get much chance to sing...

Hey Peg (the following is in tounge & cheek). Mick may not be near Boston but I'm Boston born & bred though I am just a little north of the border now & just because I don't get to do music there to often, don't hate me for it, it's just that I don't get around much anymore. Hey I did get to go to a few sessions over the Christmass holidays & play/sing with my brothers in law. Well so much for that, maybe I can get down that way more often & I won't be found to be that amusing. I do listen to Boston folk radio (I know that doesn't qualify much but hey I'm doing the best I can so I won't get passed over again).

On a different note I thought you were some where near the UK or is it just because it's the start of festival session.

Hope to see you around soon. Barry

I don't know why you would find it "amusing", Peg? We call that kidding on the square where I come from. I just happened to spend a couple of months working in the area and visited a lot of sessions. That is why Kath suggested it. But from now on I will refer all inquiries to you for vetting.

Barry, old buddy, I miss you. I have to get back to the area this year sometime. It breaks my heart that Paddy Burkes is no more. Where is Shay Walker doing his singing now? Is the club doing there gatherings elsewhere? Please pass my regards on to the regulars.

Mick
