There's the

      St Albans FolkFest

http://www.snalbans.iwarp.com/

starting on 24th and going over the weekend. It's about an hour or so's drive from Sydney, although I don't know how accessible it is by public transport. It's a lovely little festival (although getting bigger every year) and a beautiful country area.

Lots of Sydney folkies go to it, so there could be the possibility of arranging a lift there with one of them.

NSW Folk Federation has lists of folk venues and festivals

http://www.newsouthfolk.com/ffnsw/

Canberra is in the state called ACT (Australian Capital Territory) which is smack bang inside the state of NSW (New South Wales) so the NSW info would most likely include Canberra info.

I'm in Newcastle, NSW which is 100 miles north of Sydney, and I am planning to be at St Albans this year.

not easy to get to St Albans by public transport..... you can only get to Windsor or Richmond and its still a good hours drivve from there....
but well worth hiring a car or even better a campervan for the weekend and heading out there....

or if your friend wants to stay in Sydney... the Loaded Dog folk club is on on Saturday 26th with enda Kenny as guest... he is a great singer.....

Hello, folks

Alison - thanks for the link to the Dog - I need the audience as many of my regulars will be with you at Snalbans! (ps the Dog is very close to the CBD, & is easily accessible by bus, that's how I get there!)

Mary - Canberra's Merry Muse meets weekly - your friend could contact Bill Arnett for details (phone 6262 7265) or you could pm Mudcatter Canberra Chris who is a regular.

for Sydney - contact JennyO - her club meets 1st Thursday, at Gladesville, several miles north of the CBD & also on a bus route. The other club I'm involved with is on the same bus route, but a bit closer to the CBD, Folk nights at Almost Acoustic - Sat 1st May we have Gordon Bok. www.almostacoustic.live.com.au

G'day Mary,

Bill Arnett, mentioned above by Sandra, would be a fine contact for Canberra/ACT folk events ... once he surfaces, after spending all Easter running a major performance venue, based on his Merry Muse Folk Club, at the (Australian) National Folk Festival.

Bill's direct e-mail is: bandb@effect.net.au and he can certainly tell you what is happening at the Merry Muse ... and various other doings in Canberra as he posts a (~ weekly ...) newsletter on upcoming events. Unfortunately, I have just cleared my inwards of actioned files - and thus don't have the latest. If one comes in within the next week or so, I will forward to your work e-mail, given above. (Proportionately, there is much more 'folk' activity in Camberra ... being the National Capital ... and thus a 'Government' town ... there isn't much else to do than entertain yourself!)

Helen's link for NSW Folk Fed should cover the state quite well ... and St Albans is a pretty little folk festival of 20+ years standing. It would be nicer if the drought broke (before your friend went there, of course) and there was water in the river ... but it's a lovely old town - 68 kilometres / 42 miles from Sydney - as the crow flies ... but a lot further if the crow's driving along the twisty hill roads to (and from) Wisemans Ferry!

It's probably a good 2 hours' drive - and not really good for someone working out a hire car/van with inside-out steering (right-hand drive). Some 'Catters would be heading up from Sydney - but I've opted to do other things this year.

Are there any specific interest areas for your friend? This could help in suggesting suitable events and venues.

Regards,

Bob Bolton
