This was another revival song that my mother's nursemaid Ella Madison used to sing her back in the 1920's. The lryics below are a combination of what my mother remembers and what a family friend Winifred (Wendy) Holt wrote down: JONAH AND THE WHALE-II (As sung by Ella Madison to Dahlov Ipcar in the 1920's) The Lord commanded Jonah one day, "Jonah, gwine into an inner land!" But he went contrary to his God's command; He went on down to the Tarshish (Spain?) sho'; He finds one ship, she was boun' to go, He pays his fare, and he gets on bo'd, And the ship done journey 'long on de ro'd. Refrain: Live humble, humble yo'self! I got glory and honor, praise Jesus! I got glory and honor, praise the Lamb! A mighty tempest riz in de sea; Cap'n and mate come trouble in mind; Cap'n and mate come trouble in mind; They went on down to de bottom of ship, And dey foun' ole Jonah lyin' fas' asleep; "Wake ye up, ye man of God! Tell us who ain't honored de Master's word!" (REF) Jonah raised de cry and shout, "Find de man, den cast him out!" One to the other says, "Let's cast lots!" I'm also curious about the reference to "an inner land." Anyone know what that would refer to? Not a clue on the tune, of course, but I'll ask mother the next time I see her. |

Fox Smith, I found in a chapter "The Sea and Its Legends", p. 65, another reference to Tarsus/Tarshish: "..very much after the fashion of the sailors of Tarshish when they cast lots and the lot fell upon Jonah." The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea, p. 434, summarizes the Jonah tale as follows: "Jonah, one of the minor prophets of the Old testament who, after being instructed by Jehovah to go to Nineveh to preach repentence of sins, attempted to avoid his task by running away by sea to Tarshish..." I take it that "Nineveh" was the "inner land" in question. At least now I think I have a better idea of where Jonah was told to go. The song above, however, says he LEFT from the Tarshish shore rather than shipping out to it; this is very confusing. At any rate he certainly had one whale of a tale to tell! 26 Apr 03 - 12:35 PM (#940716) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jonah and the Whale-2 From: Charley Noble After consulting several travel sites on Goggle it seems clear to me that Jonah was ordered to go to "Nineveh" (might well have been folk processed to "inner land"), the ancient capital of the Assyrian Empire (near present day Mosul in occupied Iraq), one of the great enemies of the Nation of Israel at the time. No wonder he had misgivings! He is said to have embarked at Joppa (present day Jappa in Israel) for Tarshish but just where Tarshish was is not so clear. You can take your pick of almost any seaport in the Eastern Mediterranean. The island nation of Crete is one likely possibility, as is Turkey, Syria, Cyfrus and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. See Lomax's Southern Journey collection 'Earliest Times' Vol#13. Parrish's version "Linin' Humble" is mostly a one line call & one line response type of singing, as is three songs mentioned from the 'Slave Songs of the United States'. In 'Negro Folk Music of the USA' there's the song "Wake Up Jonah" another one line call & response song but the song follows, somewhat closely to the last verse of the one I posted with the response line as; "Reelin' & a-rockin' o' the ship so long". In the "Humble Yourself, the Bell Done Rung," from the "Negro Spirituals, or the Songs of the Jubilee Singers," aside from it lacking the Jonah verses does it follow the same patten of the "Live Humble" song posted & does it have related other verses in it, otherwise no showing in the verses I posted? I doubt that Yusef Latif's composition has anything to do with Jonah & the Whale's line, but who knows? Naybe he knew that song. |

This is not uncommon; new combinations and floating verses are a feature of the spirituals. In the Jubilee Singers spiritual, "New Burying Ground" also is involved. There doesn't seem to be a thread for the "Live Humble" group of spirituals which lack the reference to Jonah; I will start one and post the Jubilee Singers song there. It may make referencing to the Spirituals Permathread easier. I will post the Georgia Sea Island Singers "Live Humble" , posted by Barry Finn, to the African-American Spirituals Permathread |

My recollection of some of the lyrics varies slightly from those already provided, but the differences are too small to relate here without appearing to be pedantic. However, I can offer the first stanza of the last section - perhaps it will jog the memory of someone who can provide the rest: We had a wonderful party, And Jonah had a whale of a time, But now that we've really repented, Everything's gonna be fine. He performs it with just some fine spoon-style rhythm with his harmonica doing some breaks and fills. It's a great jam tune to get everyone banging away. No chords. Oh, Jonah! Go down Nineveh, serve the Lord. An' it's oh, Jonah! Oh, oh, Jonah! Oh, Jonah! Oh, Jonah! Go down Nineveh, serve the Lord. Go down, Jonah; go down in Nineveh, said my Lord. 1. Well, God spoke to Jonah, a Christian man, And said: "Go down to Nineveh an' take my command." Well, he gave him his orders from his royal throne, Said: "Go down to Nineveh, preach my doom. Tell 'em forty long days will pass them by. I'm gon' destroy the city with fire." But Jonah didn't want to hear God's command, So he got him a ticket out for Joppa lan'; Then he got that ticket, and got on boa'd, And the ship went to rockin' on down the sho'. So they cast ol' Jonah right overboa'd. Along came a fish and swallowed him whole, But the fish got sick by God's command, And he cast ol' Jonah right on the san'. But the sun shone down on Jonah's head, So God grew a vine to give him shade, But along came a worm and cut it down. Well, that's another star in Jonah's crown.
