17 Apr 03 - 02:51 AM (#935230) Subject: Tech: Help!! Midis won't play! From: KT Any Mac owners out there who can help me? I 'm having trouble getting midis to play. The sound is coming through, but the music is garbled to the point that the tune is unrecognizable. It's almost like the chords are not in sync with the melody. They used to play just fine, but now, every time I try to play something that is in midi format, it comes out garbled. RealPlayer works just fine, it's just the midis that won't play properly anymore. I've tried throwing away all of my Quicktime, and starting over again, but that didn't work. Any help would be most appreciated. KT |

Maybe "Mac" in the thread title would help attract the right person. Within music forums, I suppose you could also try folkinfo as Phil Taylor sometimes looks in there. He is the author of the mac abc music program "Barfly" and as such, I would guess has a lot of experience with MIDI and Macs. |

17 Apr 03 - 01:51 PM (#935602) Subject: RE: Tech: Help!! Midis won't play! From: GUEST,leeneia I'm not a MAC user, but --- Are you just listening to these MIDI's off web sites, or are they MIDI's that you produced or imported into your own music software? If you can see the music, are the bar lines lined up as you look up and down from one staff to another? If not, then there is a note or a rest which is missing, extra, or not the right length for the measure. Find it and fix it. If your melody has pick-up note(s), are there rests of the same length in the staffs below? I have another thought, which is a little vague, but here goes. I have found that MIDI software does not handle pick-up notes well. Actually, it doesn't believe in the existence of pick-up notes and tries to incorporate them into the first complete measure of the song. After that, all the bar lines are in the wrong place. This could be a factor. (I'm speaking here of situations where you download a MIDI from a site into your music software.) |

As for the midis, they are just on other websites, but won't play properly for me anymore. Like any of the midis on Mudcat....They are all garbled, too. Yet I can play things like movie trailers just fine. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with seet music or pick up notes. Any other thoughts would be most welcome . KT |

Save anything you have been working on. Turn your computer off, using the officially-approved method. Remove the plug from the electrical socket. Go away for a while, at least half an hour, but preferably longer. Turn it all back on and see what happens. This is the electronic method of giving your computer a purifying bath, and I've seen it fix some pretty strange problems. It can work for copy machines, too. |

18 Apr 03 - 12:40 PM (#936011) Subject: RE: Tech: Help!! Midis won't play! From: M.Ted I am a Mac user, and a MIDI writer/listener/Editor as well, so I have had similar problems --Before we get to your problem, I'll mention that I save MIDIs and listen to them with SoundApp, which is a freeware program (you can get it from ZDNet, or with a search) which will play any kind of sound file and lets you set up a playlist, as well--Best thing is that you can mix the MIDIs with MP3s, WAVs, AIFF's, and listen-- But back to your problem-- The first thing that I would do is to close the browser, then go into preferences in the Systems Folder control panels and move the Quicktime Preferences to the trash-- When you re-open , Quicktime will revert to default settings, and your MIDIs should play in the browser again-- If they don't, next stop is the control panel-- scroll down to Quicktime Settings-- when the box pops up, --go to "Plug-ins" Scroll to "Audio", in my OS, I click on the triangle to get a list of the different types of files, Go down to MIDI, there is a box that allows you to select Quicktime Plug-In, Quicktime player, or ´Do not use Quicktimeµ--I·d choose Quicktime Plug-In-- If that doesn·t help, move from plug-ins to Music-- There should should be a box that tells you what the music synthesizer that you are using is--it should say Quicktime Music Synthesizer(which is the synthesizer module that comes with the OS)-- if it doesn't, push the button that says "Edit" or something like that A window should appear that features a box that says name, which says "Quicktime Synthesizer" or something like it, and there should be a box with a pull down menu next to that which allows you to choose the synthesizer--there will also be a button labelled "default" that will restore the default settings-- If you don't have Quicktime Synthesizer, it means that somehow or other, you have lost the synthesizer module and you'll have to custom install a new one, either from your OS disc, or my downloading it from the Apple Website-- (the box may offer you some other options, like "General Synthesizer" or ´Roland D-10µ, but these simply allow you to connect to an outboard device)-- If none of this works, did you accidentally install a version of Quicktime that has limited or restricted functions, or do you have multiple versions of Quicktime that conflict with one another? It is also possible that you are running a version that was made to run on a later operating system than the one you have-- |
